The cutter head is surrounded by a sheet metal and wood duct.  The chips are pulled into that by a vacume.

It´s an old lathe adapted with a CNC commander. We can see the circular rails where the old tool turret was attached.

someone asked above: the rotating and axial movement are sincronized probably by an encoder.
