The reason that pioneers like Roy Acuff were so good is simple... where a lot of these greats grew up if you didn't play you didn't have music. Also if you didn't play in some cases you didn't eat. So your music and singing had to be awesome.

I believe the young woman standing to Roy's left (playing the bass fiddle) is Velma Williams Smith who was married to Hal Smith also of the band.
