  • That fucking sucks ass. Go back to marching

  • This just goes to show that if you can't play the song up to tempo then don't play it faster than the written tempo.

  • check out my band play this song. You guys did great too, but.. wel just looks at mines

  • yeah....you guys need work

  • lots of second trumpet. no lead at all! bad sax intro to solo hahaha

  • Are you at Bell? What do you play?

  • No, my son was. He is the alto sax that has the solo. His first time in Jazz Band. He graduated in 06.

Not sure how long Jazz band is at Martin, but at Bell it is for one Trimester (12 Weeks).

Andy Martin, that should be a good time.

  • wow. i really expected better from the L.D. Bell band. Even we sounded better than that last Thursday.

    -Bryce (Trumpet at Martin)

  • Well then, post it up so we can all decide.

  • We actually didnt record it from this last "concert" cause it was a dinner gig. But the next concert we will definitely have a recording for you. And then at the spring concert, we are playing with Andy Martin. Yes, the Andy Martin.

  • Cool, looking forward to hearing what y'all got.

  • This was actually decent, but that director (i guess) on trumpet really made it sound bad. Why couldn't one of the other trumpets solo? It's about the students. Not about old farts trying to show off (and very badly at that).

  • i know right. we're so much better than them. they need to just stick with marching band

  • yeah man totally, if you aren't the best why even play

  • and the coda sounded really bad too =(

  • no no no this thing needs to go atleast 250+, and the soli is not good at all, tuning in the altos, and bari cant keep the tempo

  • haha chris someone needs to get a good recording at our concert and post it. oh and we don't need an old man to play the trumpet parts either (and he still missed the double g at the end)

  • I haven't played this piece before whats with the random trumpet solo? Is that written?

  • no, that solo is not written, although in the recording by Manyard Ferguson, he does play something along the lines of that "solo"

  • Alto solo not bopping. All on root. :(

  • Every bashing this video should stop. We have 10 weeks out of the year that we get to have a jazz band. We have very little time to put a ton of stuff together, and a lot of people in the group are completely new to jazz. Go watch a video of the marching band if you still think we have a bunch of bad musicians at our school

  • This guy is right, it is a difficult piece to play, and anyone who attempts it is brave, especially the soli. Good solo, could be slightly tighter, but not bad attempt.

  • How long did you work on this before you played it?

    It's not together

  • Too fast

  • what do you mean....when i play this i know we are a couple clicks faster

  • If every member of the band can play their part perfectly and you can make it sound good at that tempo then, why not.

What i mean is its called cruising for bluesin' not racing for a bluesin'. Believe me, the tempo works best around 122 bpm. Its the tempo the band plays for 4 bars around 1:08.

  • im not saying your wrong but all i know is when I played this before it was faster...I was also with a group or professionals with music majors and not in a high school jazz, but i must say its much better then what our jazz band can do! lol

  • Oh, i know, im not saying you're wrong either! :) Thats the beauty of jazz- no one's wrong!

I guess when i said too fast i meant too fast for their standard

  • Not Bad... sax soli could do with a lot of cleaning. Our jazz band is workin on this right now, it's a great piece.

  • yea that should never be played by a high school band. its a good try but there isn't enough experience in the good to pull this tune off.

  • i would beg to differ, ours pulled it off fine, its just an incredibly intense piece.

  • I agree. Our band is sax section can pull off Asphault Jungle, we can pull off this too. I just hope i can hold the bass together.(HS band)

  • Uh, yeah I guess you don't know what you're talking about AT ALL. Our band is playing this for the second time in it's history this year for the National Jazz Band Conference in Florida. If YOU couldn't pull it off in your jazz band in high school, there is no reason to take it out on the kids who work hard to get things like this done.

I hope to see your sorry face there this year to prove you wrong.

  • Sorry, the problem is that this tune has never been done well by a HS band and never will, just not enough horsepower!

  • Generalising is more of a problem

  • Maybe if ya'll ran around the stage and did a few horns up it would be a little cleaner.

  • Yall are so dumb Mr. Ferrell knows more about Jazz than you could possibly know

  • i think it was well done this song not a joke the sax section solo from wat is it 90 to 175 i think or somwhere in that region was done well

  • yo dude that was lame with the whole "sign of the cross" thing. play it cool, your supposed to stand up, do the damn thing, and sit back down like nothing happened.

  • it slowed down like thirty clicks...my hs tried this chart when i was in school and we didn't do much better...it's tough...i was lead alto and i know how hard it is so good effort

  • my high school sax section sight read the sax soli better than these guys played it...

    stick to marching...

  • I would be interested in hearing your high schools version. Put it up so we can all listen to it. I look forward to hearing it.

  • haha yeah guys you sould just stick with marching and leave jazz to the big boys over at Harlingen High School South

  • Since The lead alto player and bari and drummer are the only ones with more than one year experince. Its pretty good.

  • you guys should stick to marching

  • lmao it seems so easy for people to dish out critisism with out merit! gr8 for high school!!!

  • Great job.

  • we did this song at the same exact speed this song is no joke !!!! good job

  • You've been terminated....

  • just another ordinary high school jazz band...

  • just another ordainary youtube comment

  • i play lead alto in my band and the soli is amazing more difficult than it sounds, i gotta give some credit where its due g.j.

  • Droped a click or two durring the soli, but like I said, I'm in a college band and this was the toughest thing I've ever had to do, same damn arrangement too. The high trumpet notes are key, and after the sax soli, they did go for it.

  • Bell sucks. ><

  • ....

  • that 1st alto solo is supposed to be a trumpet solo...and no that short or the alto playing in the middle of it....but they are very good...i dont think ur supposed to have 4 altos and one tenor, and wheres the soprano for the sax soli...and what bout the drum solo...i like how the trumpets didnt go for the higher part...but other than all that stuff it was alright

  • i love this song, but after you've heard the professional recording it just isn't the same when it comes to the trumpets not going for the highs and other parts being covered by other instruments, but sounds like a great high school group!

  • Ok, I just did the piece the last week, as a college band... this jank is hard! and about the first solo, it can be anyone, as long as you get chord changes don't worry about it.

  • Its jazz anything goes.

  • only what sounds good goes

  • whos to determine what sounds good and doesn't??

  • anyone who has a ear

  • HAHA i looove how the 1st alto crossed himself before the sax soli...that tough? didn't sound like it. hilarious otherwise

  • Haha yeah its a lot harder than it sounds. It took them forever to work that out
