I was born in '84 and I feel pop stars can be calculated, fair enough, but please show some personality like these two! I love this song but Secrets is my favourite (:
I was unlucky to come across that bint at Glasgow train station and what a sight. If you see her as I did with all that make-up chiselled off you'll poke your own eyes out
these girls were pretty popular in japan back in the day, as well as many british indie acts of that time. did they give the inspiration for the gothic lolita look?
@the3aremine1 They went off stage, then reappeared half an hour later! They 'sang' this song & a terrible version of JOLENE the Dolly Parton song.Another thing I remember thinking, was how tiny the main singer was! It was about a year before they appeared on TOTP.Its the worst 'gig' Ive ever been to.It was quite funny though!:)
1985 that was the year when British pop music went downhill, because at the end of the year, Whitney Houston, The Pet Shop Boys and A-ha had all come along. Then 1986 was littered with cover versions and re-releases of old songs.
I made a mistake, what I meant was Rose McDowall, the vocalist, was super beautiful. I wish every song that they recorded was as good as this one. I downloaded this tune and I keep listening to it over and over and over. Thank you so much for posting.
Rose McDowell and Jill Bryson very underated ........met them at a signing event in glasgow when the album came out ......wish they would get back together and go on tour
Sadly, 1985 was the year that British pop music started to go down the pan. By the end of the year, Whitney Hou8ston, A-ha and the Pet Shop Boys took over. This was the final fling of the "golden years" before the American shit took over.
@Feisty1967 I'd say things were still good until the of the decade. True, the second half of the 80's was not quite as colourful as the first half , but it was a hundred times more interesting than today's music. The golden age of British popular culture was the 60's to the 80's; The early 80's was the absolute peak.
Amazing song, brings the memories flooding back. Makes me happy and a bit sad too that that time has been lost for ever ......................... Thank you 80s for great happy music......

Thank for the upload. Really can't believe this is 25 years ago.
Always thought it odd as you see teenage girls walking around Hong Kong dressed like this. (Lolita fashion). Now I realise that they are just Strawberry Switchblade fans.
I remember this one off hit from January 1985 from Strawberry Switchblade as it was on the radio at the time when I arrived home after walking 5 miles home from school in deep snow. Oh yes, schools even closed in those days when it snowed but at least they did have some excuse, it was over a 15 inches deep unlike the slight dustings we get every Winter that bring everthing to a shutdown.
manjit1966 and monkeyguffs, you are kindred spirits. This is superb - there was so much good music at that time, it's almost too hard to watch it again. I'm just glad I was there.
This was on the "Hits 2" tape that came out about March-April 1985, and I used to listen to it on my personal stereo whilst doing my paper round. Happy days!!
my mother knew the singer they went to school together cool huh ? And my mum didnt have the confidence to sing with her but my mum formed a pub band, she used alot of this bands influence: my mum- respect to you girls love Kate, that was girl power along time ago!
say what you want about the record the girls are there dress but i would thank them for my memories if i could turn the clock back to the time when this record wouldd come on top off the town 85 fuck em
I had just turned 16 when this song was in the charts, how lucky I was to be a teenager in the 1980's, so much good music. Now I'm 40, where the hell did those years go? And why does this song never seem to appear on any 80's compilations?
@monkeyguffs : I just bought it on the compilation "Living In Oblivion - The 80's Greatest Hits Volume Four." I also bought the albums and 12 inches of this great duo years ago.
@monkeyguffs You must be about the same age as me Monkey - totally agree with you. We have computers but not good enough to keep you indoors all the time. Schools weren't like the fortresses they are now - great time to grow up...
Yeah some very happy memories indeed. I've got three kids and I feel a bit sorry for them sometimes, I mean when we were teenagers you still saw groups of youths dressed as punks, skinheads, goths etc, nowadays it all seems so bland.
@monkeyguffs i was i think 18 when this song came out and im 42 now and i barely came across this song called beach baby by a group called the first class and if you listen to section 3:06-3:19, it will sound familiar which is the beginning of since yesterday. I think this song is actually a remake too.. but yeah i miss the 80's too
This is a strange one. Why does this song fill my heart with joy whenever I hear it but yet the lyrical subject matter appears to be dark?
As we sit here alone looking for a reason to go on?....if your still here when it's all over...maybe this could be the ending with nothing left of you...
But what a gorgeous melody to go along with it! It's so upbeat and joyous and hides a dark undertone. Nice contrast - like the name. How many kids (or adults) realised what they were singing along to?
1985 started off with great optimism for a great year of pop music. The year started off well with some great pop acts like Dead or Alive, Phil Collins/Phillip Bailey, Howard Jones, Madonna, etc. Sadly the year ended up with the Pet Shop Boys, Shakin Stevens and Whitney Houston. And here marks the downturn in British Pop Music and it hasn't really recovered ever since, with a few notable exceptions.
I love their clothes. I love their dance moves. I love their charming pop music. It's just that... um... is this really a LIVE concert? I'm struggling to hear the guitar. Keep in mind lip synching was like a plague during that musical era. You can hear snippets of crowd noise... and what sounds like the exact recording of the song off the record. That is perfectly ok for the music video... but a live concert must be LIVE. Ohhh such charming girls play live!! Rose sing your heart out !!
It's not a live concert and they wouldn't have had a choice about it. During the 80s the rule was that bands HAD to mime on Top of the Pops thanks to difficulties with the old Musicians Union and the BBC's tight shooting schedule. At least we get to see her dance.

myspace is a joke for delusional peeps who pose for myspaz photshopped "photo shoots" . they dont look like that as a lifestyle like in the 80s cause they aint got the bottle. todays youth plagerise everything from the past in the worst insipid inane way e.g emu or whateva the fuck it is.get your own youth movement oh but they cant cause they have no imagination.
I was born in '84 and I feel pop stars can be calculated, fair enough, but please show some personality like these two! I love this song but Secrets is my favourite (:

It's great how she's not even close to those strings! ;-)

Best music ever.
Is it me or was almost everything on totp mimed? They sound exactly like studio quality!

Yes it was mimed. I was there. But the music's played so loud that it seems less obvious in the studio.

myspace is a joke for delusional peeps who pose for myspaz photshopped "photo shoots" . they dont look like that as a lifestyle like in the 80s cause they aint got the bottle. todays youth plagerise everything from the past in the worst insipid inane way e.g emu or whateva the fuck it is.get your own youth movement oh but they cant cause they have no imagination.
