  • I was born in '84 and I feel pop stars can be calculated, fair enough, but please show some personality like these two! I love this song but Secrets is my favourite (:

  • interesting combo - not sure why the tall one is there (unless its for the guitar solos). pretty pop song though.

  • @naishdave The tall one is there for her cock-sucking lips.

  • My mom was so much into them in the 80's, she still play's there's CD's there song's are pretty cool.

  • Nice semi-goth look

  • don't you just love the 80's. wish i was back there.

  • I would do both of them.

  • @WSMDSA Lucky them!

  • @richiepap LOL

  • @richiepap LOL

  • @WSMDSA me too, they are goddesses,i'd do them now even

  • I was unlucky to come across that bint at Glasgow train station and what a sight. If you see her as I did with all that make-up chiselled off you'll poke your own eyes out

  • @sockington1 Where aboots did they live?

  • @drewwilson1888 Glasgow - I'm guessing Gorbals, not Kelvinside

  • @sockington1 Quite close to ma house

  • FAP FAP FAP FAP!

  • oh my god i sat theese girls play live many many years ago bloody hell its stil a fantastic song xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • these girls were pretty popular in japan back in the day, as well as many british indie acts of that time. did they give the inspiration for the gothic lolita look?

  • nice bit of plastic pop

  • I seen them in Bournemouth,I remember the mime tape mucked up!

  • @stevobath lol, what happened,

  • @the3aremine1 They went off stage, then reappeared half an hour later! They 'sang' this song & a terrible version of JOLENE the Dolly Parton song.Another thing I remember thinking, was how tiny the main singer was! It was about a year before they appeared on TOTP.Its the worst 'gig' Ive ever been to.It was quite funny though!:)

  • dancing makes vocals flow ;)

  • yes ;))

  • reminds me of getting my first council house , then a few months later discovering i was pregnant with my son whos now 25! just seems like yesterday

  • spot the black bloke giving it beans in the background

  • @kqpm392 "Beans?"!!

  • 1985 that was the year when British pop music went downhill, because at the end of the year, Whitney Houston, The Pet Shop Boys and A-ha had all come along. Then 1986 was littered with cover versions and re-releases of old songs.

  • @Feisty1967 psb produced some class tunes sorry 4 number 1s dont lie

  • @Feisty1967 psb always on my mind still played today and loved . nowt wrong with ss but not psb leuge

  • Wow, I'd forgotten all about this group. Thanks for the reminder

  • I had such a crush on the lead singer :)

  • class pop tune..

  • Oh, I had it so bad for that dark haired bird. And, er, I think I still do.

  • I loved this..... Jill and Rose were from my home town......so was Clare Grogan. I loved, loved, loved the 80´s.

  • what a cracking pop tune..get this back in the charts?

  • And as we sit here alone

Looking for a reason to go on

It's so clear that all we have now

    Are our thoughts of yesterday

  • Rose McDowell and Jill Bryson very underated ........met them at a signing event in glasgow when the album came out ......wish they would get back together and go on tour

  • I have no regrets being young in the 80's. The noise on the radio today is just awful.

  • Sadly, 1985 was the year that British pop music started to go down the pan. By the end of the year, Whitney Hou8ston, A-ha and the Pet Shop Boys took over. This was the final fling of the "golden years" before the American shit took over.

  • @Feisty1967 I'd say things were still good until the of the decade. True, the second half of the 80's was not quite as colourful as the first half , but it was a hundred times more interesting than today's music. The golden age of British popular culture was the 60's to the 80's; The early 80's was the absolute peak.

  • these two are gorgeous, like a cross between gothic punk girl and hello kitty!

  • The 80s were one long party, sad that those days are gone.

  • Still rocks. Right then, and right now.

  • Amazing song, brings the memories flooding back. Makes me happy and a bit sad too that that time has been lost for ever ......................... Thank you 80s for great happy music......

  • Beach Baby wasn't originally done by the Beach Boys! As tiana says, it was written by John Carter and Jill Shakespeare of The First Class in 1974.

  • Saw them "live" promoting this in a small disco in Dalkeith at the time, the place was bouncing :-)

  • that is awfull , lol ..forgetable

  • i havent seen this on any 80's compilations either.shame because it was a big hit.havent seen any altered images either.maybe us scots were bombed out of gettins some more royalties

  • i feel for people who never had a chance to be a kid then it was great

  • Glaswegian Girls Nick parts Of Sibelius' Symphony No.2

    lol

  • Fabulous group from Glasgow!

  • Thanks for the video. I think I remember watching it and the charts were so good that they didn't have a chance?

  • Thank for the upload. Really can't believe this is 25 years ago.

Always thought it odd as you see teenage girls walking around Hong Kong dressed like this. (Lolita fashion). Now I realise that they are just Strawberry Switchblade fans.

  • these girls became superstars after 25 years. the magic of internet

  • @stevent60 i love them, i have two import original EPs from this group and 2 videos

  • Saw these supporting Howard Jones at the Albert Hall, christmas 1984. Even had the picture disc of the single! :)

  • a relief .

  • I remember this one off hit from January 1985 from Strawberry Switchblade as it was on the radio at the time when I arrived home after walking 5 miles home from school in deep snow. Oh yes, schools even closed in those days when it snowed but at least they did have some excuse, it was over a 15 inches deep unlike the slight dustings we get every Winter that bring everthing to a shutdown.

  • love ur vids Helen, thanks for uploading, they bring some right memories back x

  • i wish i had have had a wank over them at the time

  • manjit1966 and monkeyguffs, you are kindred spirits. This is superb - there was so much good music at that time, it's almost too hard to watch it again. I'm just glad I was there.

  • love her dancing

  • Simply Brilliant. The 1980s were fab. I miss those times so much, almost brings tears to my eyes

  • Scottastic, still sweet and sharp. Thanks Girls.

  • i was 14 when this came out i think i had bit of a crush on them 2 great song

  • This track calls for a remake!!!!

  • Monkeyguffs, you are 1 lucky bastard,

I am 56 and I ask the same question,

see you in 14 years then and you'll know the speed

    that operates in my head:)

  • they were the andidote for smiths at the time

  • i agree monkeyguffs i was 15 just turning 16 im 40 june 2010 where have the yrs gone gettin depressed now i do as yrs go on and im gettin older

  • This was on the "Hits 2" tape that came out about March-April 1985, and I used to listen to it on my personal stereo whilst doing my paper round. Happy days!!

  • Fantastic song, there were quite a few girl bands about in the 80's.

  • I was a young girl when this was in the charts and I couldn't believe how fantastic they were and how I wanted to look just like them.

  • rose joined band death in june????..kick ass band x

  • my mother knew the singer they went to school together cool huh ? And my mum didnt have the confidence to sing with her but my mum formed a pub band, she used alot of this bands influence: my mum- respect to you girls love Kate, that was girl power along time ago!

  • rose is ma mums cousin :D

  • Rose McDowell was a doll.

  • @HandsomeTroll I saw her at Glasgow trian station with al the black stuff chiselled of and she wasn't so hot

  • i only saw a bit of the statement and i just started laughing uncontrollably. I stilldress like that. i can't stop laughing.!

  • Any idea why the girl is playing a guitar ?

  • Jill Bryson was on guitar, Rose McDowall on vocals. Rose went on to sing with Death In June and Current 93

  • Part of "image", just because on some other album tracks, guitars are more prominent, I think.

  • I wish I dressed like that back then. I could now but my hairs too short.

  • nice song love em..... if i were an adult during that time i could have nailed her too as well.. even both of them lolz....

  • um. i still dress like that. i don't think i ever didnt...

  • say what you want about the record the girls are there dress but i would thank them for my memories if i could turn the clock back to the time when this record wouldd come on top off the town 85 fuck em

  • I bet you would have nailed the lead singer. I would have eat her pussy for an hour non stop.

  • cracked me up!

  • Lets go the mall!

  • that stuff is back in fashion again aaarrrgh! otherwise, tough edgy live performance :)

  • ok song but fashion disasters

  • なつかしー!

    名曲ですなー!

  • this is sweetarama!

  • Fit as the proverbial "butcher's dogs"

  • Those ladies are extremely beautiful!

  • @vulpecula999

A woman is always hotter without her dress, dear.

    Sour grapes then, is it?

  • I'm sure i've still got this on 9 inch vinyl,top that!!

  • No such thing as 9" vinyl, geezer

  • Sorry yeah got mixed up with the size of something else I posess! You know what I meant - single on vinyl.

  • NO, but there is the 10" vinyl maxi-single.

  • Just utterly divine! Takes me back to my youth....

  • I had just turned 16 when this song was in the charts, how lucky I was to be a teenager in the 1980's, so much good music. Now I'm 40, where the hell did those years go? And why does this song never seem to appear on any 80's compilations?

  • Know how you feel, we're the same age and good god its killing me!!

  • @monkeyguffs : I just bought it on the compilation "Living In Oblivion - The 80's Greatest Hits Volume Four." I also bought the albums and 12 inches of this great duo years ago.

  • @monkeyguffs my mum says this song is one of the best and its an unforgotten song that should be in the everyday charts

  • @monkeyguffs same as that eighties were brilliant, now knocked by non entity z list celebs and those to old or to young to enjoy them, great days!!

  • @monkeyguffs You must be about the same age as me Monkey - totally agree with you. We have computers but not good enough to keep you indoors all the time. Schools weren't like the fortresses they are now - great time to grow up...

  • @monkeyguffs I'm 41, miss the eighties so much, first smoke, drink, and shag, heady days indeed,

  • Yeah some very happy memories indeed. I've got three kids and I feel a bit sorry for them sometimes, I mean when we were teenagers you still saw groups of youths dressed as punks, skinheads, goths etc, nowadays it all seems so bland.

I really must be getting old.....................

  • @monkeyguffs you are not alone, I'm going to get a Delorean and get back there!

  • @monkeyguffs had this on know thats what i call music 2

  • @monkeyguffs i was i think 18 when this song came out and im 42 now and i barely came across this song called beach baby by a group called the first class and if you listen to section 3:06-3:19, it will sound familiar which is the beginning of since yesterday. I think this song is actually a remake too.. but yeah i miss the 80's too

  • @tiana1017 Beach baby was originally done by the Beach Boys in the 60's and yes that part is extremely similar!

  • @tiana1017 Beach Baby was originally done by the Beach Boys but yes that part of the music is very similar.

  • @monkeyguffs

here here - was a teenager all through the 80s too

    awesome times even awesomer music

  • @monkeyguffs wasnt it great in the 80's? x

  • @monkeyguffs someone heard your plea, check out an 80s mixtape just released...43 here!!

  • This is a strange one. Why does this song fill my heart with joy whenever I hear it but yet the lyrical subject matter appears to be dark?

As we sit here alone looking for a reason to go on?....if your still here when it's all over...maybe this could be the ending with nothing left of you...

But what a gorgeous melody to go along with it! It's so upbeat and joyous and hides a dark undertone. Nice contrast - like the name. How many kids (or adults) realised what they were singing along to?

  • it's melancholy

    the joy to be sad

    or maybe wagner was right

    the melody set the mood

  • the potshot version is better

  • Don't CRY or CRY!!!

  • 1985 started off with great optimism for a great year of pop music. The year started off well with some great pop acts like Dead or Alive, Phil Collins/Phillip Bailey, Howard Jones, Madonna, etc. Sadly the year ended up with the Pet Shop Boys, Shakin Stevens and Whitney Houston. And here marks the downturn in British Pop Music and it hasn't really recovered ever since, with a few notable exceptions.

  • I could not agree more. Someone who knows what they are talking about, That is VERY rare on here. This was indeed the era when music died.

  • Right now i want to be in a Strawberry Switchblade sandwich!

  • I so much agree. The only person doing anything interesting today is LaRoux.

  • What about Natasha Khan?? aka bat for Lashes...she's brilliant

  • I want to be young again, the music was soooo much better than the crap released today.

  • they were not aloud to mime to the actual song in those days, they had to make another track as close to the original as possible,pussique..

  • This is ultimate 80's fashion! Goth meets Hello Kitty!

  • fantastic comment! hit the nail right on the head. horny pair of vixens though eh?

  • no this is not a live concert. sing and play back was the shit in the 80s

  • I love their clothes. I love their dance moves. I love their charming pop music. It's just that... um... is this really a LIVE concert? I'm struggling to hear the guitar. Keep in mind lip synching was like a plague during that musical era. You can hear snippets of crowd noise... and what sounds like the exact recording of the song off the record. That is perfectly ok for the music video... but a live concert must be LIVE. Ohhh such charming girls play live!! Rose sing your heart out !!

  • It's not a live concert and they wouldn't have had a choice about it. During the 80s the rule was that bands HAD to mime on Top of the Pops thanks to difficulties with the old Musicians Union and the BBC's tight shooting schedule. At least we get to see her dance.

  • Wasn't Another Day a hit? That was my favourite track. Shame they didn't last long.

Thanks for posting this bit of nostalgia.

  • I used to think Rose McDowell was well fit!!!

  • Strawberry Switchbade made one of the best pop albums of the decade.

    It was amazing.

So underated, so much more than 1 hit wonders.

    I'll always adore them.

  • As a schoolboy in the 80's I have to say that this pair fuelled many unsavoury daydreams during boring chemistry lessons...

    *rubs trouserlegs lasciviously*

  • 1985 - these girls didnt know quite where to put themselves image wise did they ? ; kind of Lene Lovich cast offs from '79

  • the guitarist is the daughter of The Tremoloes lead singer Brain Poole

  • No she aint..you are thinking of Alishas Attic

  • Fab xxx

  • Yeah sadly it did and they to resort to making a living from making cheap comments on youtube for a living.

  • turquoisetandemcycle and

    MegaRapture,

do you not think you may be taking this all a bit too seriously? And have you had a look at yourself naked in a full length mirror lately?

I did and it was awful, but now I remember what i thought about fat old dudes before I became one.

A tune is a tune if you like it.

How many tunes have you made?

    i haven't made any.

  • So when is the

    NExt New Wave Movement?

  • Obviously mimed, but prefer it to the original video. Added to favorites!

  • Rose Mcdowall is the most adorable thing I've ever seen or heard! So hot!

  • she isn't that hot when she isn't all spackled up

  • I was a teenager in the 80 s,and although the music was a million times better than the awfull shit pop music is today,it was still grossly inferior to that sulime period between 1965-1973,that really was pop music and pop cultures golden age.

  • Ahhhh, the 80's -- takes me back.

It's great how she's not even close to those strings! ;-)

  • It would have been better for her to have stood behind a synthesizer keyboard.

  • Hahaha very good ;) Cute singer, yum :P

  • music today is shit! i wish i lived in the 80s .

  • Best music ever.

Is it me or was almost everything on totp mimed? They sound exactly like studio quality!

  • Yes it was mimed. I was there. But the music's played so loud that it seems less obvious in the studio.

  • 80's THe Best Decade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • totp in the eighties was the best its ever been,,,,,the bands had great names not like today

  • Why girls don't dress up like that these days?(((

Lucky you were back in 80's,40yrs olds=)

  • You clearly haven't been on myspace!

  • myspace is a joke for delusional peeps who pose for myspaz photshopped "photo shoots" . they dont look like that as a lifestyle like in the 80s cause they aint got the bottle. todays youth plagerise everything from the past in the worst insipid inane way e.g emu or whateva the fuck it is.get your own youth movement oh but they cant cause they have no imagination.

  • Look dont get me wrong; I cant stand mainstream pop but....

its the way she carries herself I think.. the unforgettable melody.. the name this is the best pop song maybe in the world

  • but do you like it?
