It seems to me as is if the duel should've ended when he turned into a walrus and landed on her. I mean, if a walrus landed on a chicken in real life that would be the end of the chicken or at the very least the chicken would be knocked unconscious.

It's amazing how their animal choices reflect their personalities. Merlin sticks mainly to small/prey animals who are not noted for their ferocity. Yet they are always the right form for the right job. He prizes cunning over strength. Mim prefers large/predatory animals that are powerful and deadly... but she has absolutely no strategy beyond turning herself into a deadly animal and charging at Merlin. That's why she lost. She never thought any further than the next pounce.
