I was a big fan of Mark, Don and Mel. When Craig came in and they became GF minus the R, starting with Pheonix, my interest faded. Soon, after a few years, they disbanded. When they started wearing all those bright colored clothes and Mark even shaved his chest, they seemed to have sold out and gone commercial and that to me was not how GF should look. I think Don, just by the way he acts, is a bit of a prick. Maybe the success of HIS GF songs went to his head. The voice of GF was mark, not Don.
I don't know why but Mel's voice kinda symbolises more of my memories of GFR than Marks...why, I don't know? - guess it's very distinctive - just loved this band so much...they are virtually unheard of in the UK by most 45+ year old!
Mel on bass was from Question Mark & the Mysterions (96 tears). Saw the trio in 1972 in Syracuse. Blew us away with "Mr. Limosine Driver." What a show!!!!
@Obelisk2290 This was a medley with I'm Your Captain. That's why the horns were there although I agree, they should have kept silent during American Band.
This is a 3-piece band! The original guys "back up" Mark Farner? Please. FARNER IS ONLY 1/3 OF THE BAND that was founded by him AND Don Brewer (who wrote We're an American Band, Grand Funk's FIRST #1-hit BTW). This is the only GFR. NONE OF THESE GUYS are as good as a whole band when they're playing solo....
What gets me is this new band should be called Grand Funk Revisited.
Mark Farner wrote, played lead guitar, keyboards, harp, & sang lead on 96% of GFRxR songs. When he is not there, it is not Grand Funk Railroad!!! He does NOT like the band being represented as original with him not there.
He has asked for & was turned down for an original Power Trio 40th reunuion.
I've seen them several times, both with and without Craig and they played better with Craig. Some older fans say the trio didn't NEED Craig and they didn't, but I have to say you that the best I ever saw them play was as a foursome in about 1973 playing their older material. Glad to see them reunited here. I also saw them in 1997, reunited, at a show in Del Mar. It was a great show. Fans know it's not really GRAND FUNK unless all of them are playing together. It sure ain't Grand Funk w/o Mark.
I totally agree. The trio was cool, that's how they started, but heck they became the American band WITH Craig Frost. Their music became more sophisticated, which I liked. In the book done about Farner, it says that after the band was over, that he and Mark actually had a talk about it, Mark's not having been keen on Frost joining. I like Peter Frampton, but if that idea was true, that woulda sucked lol. I still think it's a shame Frost wasn't made a full member in the GFR entity.
@JDtheMusicMan The reason Frost was not good for GFR is that very few of the songs were complimented by a Organ. Organ playing during most of the GFR songs is dynamicly opposed to the GFR Sound. The reason Don pushed for a keyboard player in the band was he had the idea of the Corporate Structure Hatched long before he finally pulled it off. Graig was a friend of Dons not Mel or Mark. Don wanted to get a 3 to 1 advantage long before they broke up. Anyone who knows the real story HATES BREWER...
Oh man, I knew that they had performed on this show, but this is the first time I've seen any of this. The REAL Grand Funk (wish Craig had been invited back for this...)
I don,t like this one the horns did this one in.Grand Funk WAS RAW NO HORNS
