they really are wonderful horses. i bought my first foxtrotter (and gaited horse) last august and she has taught me so much since then (even if i times i've been ready to pull my hair out trying to understand gait lol) . never say never, but the way it looks now, i'll never go back to trotting horses!!!
Great looking horse...I have a little MFT mare - she only had a show gait when I bought her...then we found the fantastic running walk. She can speed up faster than my friends can lope while maintaining that smooth movement. Even on little mountainous single track trails. She is brave, lively and adorable. I love this breed! My singlefooting horses don't seem to be able to handle the narrow trails and steep slopes as well at anywhere near the speed.
Thank you! You got lucky with your little mare!! Many horses in this breed have that wonderful 4th gear, the running walk, but there are soooo many that do not. To find a horse that is smooth and sure footed to ride from 0 to 10 or 12mph is a rare thing. Hold onto that girl!! Better yet, breed her with a stallion who will compliment her and make another one just like her. ; )
Any recommendations on a stud? She is a pale palomino, very Arab looking head, long bodied, about 15h. I'm in California. She is 5, I plan on doing some Natrac races this coming year or two, then might breed her. My friends ride Tevis, but that is too much for me!!
Sure, but I should really have photos and video if possible for the best recommendation. I can also ask the opinion of other experienced breeders for you. Naturally we would suggest a Fox Trotter. : ) Write me a personal email and I can help more.
Now that's what I'm talkin bout! I have been looking videos of foxtrotters for an hour and it pains me to see people post some of these videos that give them a bad name. This is the real deal! Thank you! I have 3 and I was starting to think they were the only real ones lol.
He is flat walking and fox trotting in the whole video. At the end with the lady riding him, he starts to go into a running walk motion, but not quite... still fox trotting. Many people who only know modern fox trot show standards, don't realize that the official definition of the fox trot has changed dramatically over the past 60-70 years. If you watch "The MFTHBA Educational Film 1975" offered for sale by the MFTHBA, you can see this. Unfortunately, show tastes have changed over the years.
@zionsgait i do not see a flatwalk at all, he is using his hindend properly for a foxtrot, but "swingy" with his front, but regardless, it is a very smooth looking 4 beat gait and a beautiful horse, looks like a running walk, but not getting underneath himself enough to truly be one, this may be the "amble" gait. but really who cares when all you want to do is have fun and enjoy them right???:)
@barnbeeful Many horse don't do "textbook" gaits. The definitions have also changed drastically over the years so what is really "correct?" I tend to let my horses do what is comfortable, surefooted and comes naturally to them. I don't force them to fit a definition. You are right. They are to enjoy anyway. ; )
i love love love this horse.
