I remember envying my relations in London because they could get Channel 4 right from the start. We had to wait nearly a year in Eastbourne. I rushed out asnd bought a portable telly and listened to the tapes all the way through. The image of the testcard was literally burnt into the screen by the end !!
@daley19945 That is really cool! I'm in Eastbourne, but back in the mid 80s just my sister lived here and I remember her getting an early cable tv thing on a local trial basis, which I thought was ace because it mean't we could watch MTV when we visited!
I loved the opening track at the time....and now I think it sounds even better! Certainly the best tune on this tape, but hard to record because I never quite knew when the tone would be faded out for the music to start.
Those were the days. Playing games on my Spectrum, listening to synth tunes over the Channel 4 test card, drooling over Carol Vorderman. Well, some things never change.
Isn't the human brain brill - to think I have not heard these for over 26years and can remenmber them as if they were in the charts. Great. Well done!
People, including my family think im weird for liking my house and trance tunes. But they im even more weird for liking the CH4 test card tunes. So its nice to know there are others out there like me who liked this music. Nice to meet you guys. :) :)
You did that too, eh? :) My cassettes got lost long long ago though, sadly. But it's great to hear some of those tunes again through the miracle of the modern age that is YouTube.
Well, I'm not quite anorak enough to know the name of the tune or the compilation tape it came off (unlike many of the posters here!!). It kind of went... de de de der der de der der; de de de der de der der der derrrrr with a trumpet playing the melody. So that's probably narrowed it down to a hundred or so possibilities.
I'll name that tune in one! *Must* be Strolling by Frode Thingnæs (listen to the last 20 or so seconds of cswilliams1976's other upload "S4C Testcard with Almost Together (Tracks 5-8)")
Sorry, just listened to that, and it wasn't the one. I've just emailed me humming a couple of bars from it to Anorak 103 who reckons he can name it. God help us all with this embarrasingly nerdy affliction we have!
The duty office at C4 used to send me copies of their cue sheets so I could find similar recordings. Still have them somewhere.

Does anyone have a genuine video of the tone being fade out on the Channel 4 test card in time for the first piece of music ever played

If you google Val Podlasinski - composer of this fine track - you'll see he was once sales manager at Moog!
