I was in Den Hague in 2008 and the Dutch people outside of the local coffee shop which was referred to me by a museum security guard, were some of the most spiteful cunts I had ever encountered in my travels. Let me explain it all: You are allowed to buy weed from the coffeeshop (Max 5 grams) but the coffeeshops also get their weed from a random person (Good quality most of the times really great :) ) but your not allowed to sell weed as a random person since you may only buy weed from the coffeeshop. So that person who sells the weed is doing something illigal but as soon as it is at the coffeeshop its legal. Coffeeshops are allowed to have 500 grams in stock.

Contrairy to popular speech, weed is NOT legal in Holland. But it is condoned, IF you meet certain restrictions.
Like there's a set amount of grams that you can carry. You're not allowed to smoke in public. You can't drive if you're under the influence etcetera.
And coffeeshops are allowed to sell it, but the coffeeshops have no legal way to get weed. Growing etc is all highly illegal. It's causing a lot of debate in NL
If you cooperate with the police, they cannot even touch you. But believe me, the law in Netherlands is quite Orwellian, they have much search / repression powers and the distinction between the D.A. and the judge isn't always very clear. Too often, judges just assume that what the D.A. says is true.

That makes no sense how the coffee shops can sell it but no one can grow it of transport it, then where do they expect the coffee shops to get it? Very nice officer by the way.
Owners of coffeeshops have a license to grow marihuanaplants, and so they can get their own stuff. And they have a license to sell the mary j, and people can smoke it in coffeeshops, and actually you cant take the marihuana out of there, but everybody does and they smoke it at home or on the street.
I sincerely hope this Dutch Policemen is still on the street in Nijmegen and is made an example of the most amicable light hearted interview, promoting the profile of integrity and kindness, as I look back is was a privilege to meet such a high standard officer willing to explain about the rules of selling pot in coffee shops in Holland.

The rule is about plantations. Up to 5 is not considered a plantation and therefore not acted upon....but I doubt 10 plants would get you arrested. They will ask you to remove 5 if they catch you.
Yes, they pay income taxes like any other business does, but marijuana is not seperately taxed like alcohol, tabacco or gasoline is. Many people would like to see that happen to marijuana though.

The trick is that it all still is illegal *technically* BUT coffee shops are condoned. Smoking the stuff in your house is condoned. Still illegal but it gives the legal system some form of control.

-Only a coffeeshop owner (license) may sell marihuana.
-A license holder can not buy marihuana so purchasing is illegal
-A coffeeshop owner must pay 60% on taxes on every sale
-There are 730 coffeeshops in Holland and 350 growshops
-A coffeeshop may have a maximum of 500 grams in stock
-730 shops sale about 2 billion Euro a year (400 million euro on taxes)
-Coffeshops can only sell 5 grams pp

Let me explain it all: You are allowed to buy weed from the coffeeshop (Max 5 grams) but the coffeeshops also get their weed from a random person (Good quality most of the times really great :) ) but your not allowed to sell weed as a random person since you may only buy weed from the coffeeshop. So that person who sells the weed is doing something illigal but as soon as it is at the coffeeshop its legal. Coffeeshops are allowed to have 500 grams in stock.

Contrairy to popular speech, weed is NOT legal in Holland. But it is condoned, IF you meet certain restrictions.
Like there's a set amount of grams that you can carry. You're not allowed to smoke in public. You can't drive if you're under the influence etcetera.
And coffeeshops are allowed to sell it, but the coffeeshops have no legal way to get weed. Growing etc is all highly illegal. It's causing a lot of debate in NL

If you cooperate with the police, they cannot even touch you. But believe me, the law in Netherlands is quite Orwellian, they have much search / repression powers and the distinction between the D.A. and the judge isn't always very clear. Too often, judges just assume that what the D.A. says is true.

I hate that they enforce unconstitutional rules here in the states, and how they seem to be chosen by a profile that pre-disposes them towards brutality, ignorance, and almost always an ego trip of epic size! Owners of coffeeshops have a license to grow marihuanaplants, and so they can get their own stuff. And they have a license to sell the mary j, and people can smoke it in coffeeshops, and actually you cant take the marihuana out of there, but everybody does and they smoke it at home or on the street.

I've visited a lot of countries in my life and I have yet to find friendlier cops than the Dutch police.
The german ones aren't too bad either...
Worst police experiences I've had was in Spain, Italy, USA, Marocco and Portugal.
I've seen the police to their work in all these countries.. and they're really aggresive in all of the above.
I feel like some cops there should be hunted by the police instead of amongst them.

Most of them are short tempered etc but i guess i would be if i would be underpayed and do so much paperwork that i spend more then a 3 of my working hours doing administration. the laws here for example on weed the gedoogbeleid (google it haha) are complex and multi interpretative

The transportation from growing place to coffeeshop is illegal as well. But then the selling of weed to customers in the coffeeshop is legal. So you can say that selling weed is legal, but growing and transporting it isn't. however to do B, you must also do A

Cause other countries didnt are going in your favour for the "We dont know the names so it didnt happen" Religious "argument".
After 1940 it has shown that we lost 75% of the jewish population in the register. Thats 110,000 jews desported. 5000 made it back. alot were executed on the spot.

The rule is about plantations. Up to 5 is not considered a plantation and therefore not acted upon....but I doubt 10 plants would get you arrested. They will ask you to remove 5 if they catch you.

Yes, they pay income taxes like any other business does, but marijuana is not seperately taxed like alcohol, tabacco or gasoline is. Many people would like to see that happen to marijuana though.
I don't. I'll probably grow my own if the government puts a hefty "accijns" tax on it.

The trick is that it all still is illegal *technically* BUT coffee shops are condoned. Smoking the stuff in your house is condoned. Still illegal but it gives the legal system some form of control.
People that think smoking a joint is legal are wrong. But getting arrested smoking a joint will take a lot of effort, that much is true. Getting arrested for just smoking tobacco may be easier. ;^)

Don't listen to the complaining, you can call it Holland. It might not be 100% accurate, but we Dutch people also call it Holland on numerous occasions. It is just nitpicking, we all know what you mean. They are right though Holland refers to the provinces, but nobody uses this to refer to the provinces only to the country. About the cops they are nice, again don't listen to some of the people here. You can ask for directions or just have a chat with them. Just don't do something illegal.
