This is overall my favorite role of hers. Her somewhat awkward stage presence and big figure don't matter as much in this role because it's tomboyish anyway. Her voice also had a somewhat playful texture to it, which works very well here. Combine that with her virtuoso coloratura, and you have quite a performance here.
Elsewhere on YouTube there is a video posted by LadyArmide of Sutherland singing this same aria in performance - 16 years later!! And apart from a couple of pinched notes here and there, she still sings the pants off it. At the time she referred to herself as "the grandmother of the regiment"!!! :-)
I agree ! I think she is acting fine, sings with very much fun and her french is rather good. I did not know Joan like this: in a lighter role. However: I saw her some time ago in a video from Les dialoque des Carmelites (in english) and I was very astonished about het enormous talent to sing this delicate opera. And this I mean: La Fille, Les dialoques and I Puritany: so different and all sung by one voice.
Coloraturafan, i say it again, if I could, I would have your babies ;-) LOL!!! You are brilliant!! Where on earth do you find these recrodings!!! i would love to have heard Pavarotti and Sutherland record Don Pasquale - I'm sure Dame Joan would have had just as much fun in that role plus given it the vocal flirtations to boot!
She was such fun in this role, and it's a shame she didn't do more comic operas. I saw her on stage many times, and her diction was exemplary even in the higher regions of her voice. She was also criticized for her acting; her Lucia and Violetta were very moving. She even made Gilda a believable character. La Stupenda was indeed that.
Aside from the glorious voice and completely adorable personality, would somebody PLEASE notice that her DICTION is crystal clear. All of you great experts who parrot the oft-expressed claims about her diction should hang their heads in shame. There is no competition. Joan is the greatest!
Dear Richie, I quite agree with you that she sounded very clear in this aria. However, people were right, her diction used to be very dark due to that she put her entire focus on coloratura; she got a whole lot better later when her voice, unfornuately, went a bit darker. (which is okay I guess, 'cos we still love her)
And so say all of us. Truly Truly the greatest. She most certainly has left her marque throughout the operatic world. The sheer joy she gave to the many is legendary. She is now enjoying her retirement, living with her husband Richard in Austrailia. She was perfection.
Is this performance available on DVD.

Too bad no one can understand what she sings - her French is atrocious.

I can understand her perfectly! Your response is hyperbolic. Do not speak for others.

Je pense que son français est juste passable, mais acceptable pour des oreilles anglo saxones. Good effort tho...

OMG, just listen to the opening of the aria? No soprano can sing (or has ever sung)like this as Sutherland did. She was really like a trumpet!

Really ? I thought only tenors were supposed to sound like trumpets. Just my opinions
kngiht84 4 years ago
Actually Sutherland is know to be able to hit High E-flats with a "trumpet-effect". They're the most thrilling ever!

Marvelous as usual, my favorite of her "light-hearted" roles.
