Yes, the books are important, but the show can stand alone, without the book. A season 3 could be based on LaGuerda learning of Doakes theory after he is convicted, and she also becomes infatuated with following Dexter. Lila could also be following Dexter, and discover his secret.

Pretty sure Michael C Hall signed on for three seasons could be wrong...doakes will either die or go to prison for dexter's crimes...in season 3 idk could be about Dexter deevolving like all serial killers eventually do
And also it should be apparent that since it is based on the novels - as opposed to a complete facsimile of it, that the writing team have enough scope to spin it out into a further 4 seasons with the material at hand.

nope no season 3 cuz the second season is based on the 2nd and final book of dexter "Dearly Devoted Dexter" but no worries itl be a fitting and amazing conclusion, i read the books ;)
