I wholeheartedly agree. I worked for world vision this year as a part of their christmas campaign to sponsor children, and it was the most rewarding and enriching summer job ive ever had. 80.3% of WV's funds go directly to projects and sponsoring a child is so fulfilling for people. So if you can definitely get involved!!
To bring a community out of poverty, stop then breeding, a country with billions in population can't be sustainable because their land isn't suitable to farm huge yields of crops, if we feed them all, they'll just breed more, 10 kids or even more per family, we'll never be able to keep up while their population is so high, education is the answer, teach them that having 10 kids will only cause further poverty and starvation.
@theslytherinenation well-put, I agree. The best way to help others when it comes to religion is to not pester them freedom of information, yes! But also freedom of choice, and freedom of disinterest, please.
I love the work that World Vision does. Their sponsorship programs and work with the disenfranchised, but what I do not love, and what I do not think is OK, is their missionary work. Religion should not have to be involved in helping the under privileged, its fine for a charity itself to have religious motivations as most people do, but to hoist those views and have missionary programs that aim to convert others is disgraceful and should be stopped.

Alright. But how do you then convince people like me. I'd say that poverty will disappear on its own, without me, or anyone else, helping through charity. Capitalism and profit seeking behavior will force producers to move production to where it is cheapest, which means relatively poor countries. As these money flow into poor countries, they can be used for accumulating ever more productive capital and developing infrastructure and education, creating ever more wealth.
@SimaanFreeloader To use the analogy from the video, it's like people doing charity are picking away at the huge block of iron with garden tools like spades and axes. While in the meantime over at the opposite side of the iron block, private companies removing the problem with those huge bucket-wheel excavators they use for strip mining only to make profit. While you may like to think otherwise, your garden tools are not really that important to the presence of the block of iron.
@echidna1000 I very much doubt that that would ever happen given how much the poor in the past went through without going extinct. And the poor were a lot worse off back then than they are now.
Thanks for actually saying how shit humans can be regarding eachother. This video was made of awesome and it's obvious you haven't forgotten to be awesome. Happy P4A day! :]
@shortshortspeeps I am non religious and a long time world vision supporter and find they do not present their religious beliefs over to their supporters. In terms of funds going to needy.... Say they use 20% of donations to keep providing their services that's still 80% profit going to those in need. That's fairly went in any business. When you're CEO of world vision one day, you can make the call and not do the marketing efforts and see if it affects the next years donations amount? Big call
Plus, they seem to spend a huge amount of money for a non profit organisation, mostly in advertising, as they did by sending bloggers like yourself into third world areas to spread their word, as well as countless information packages sent out to schools and other organisations yearly. And yes, I know this is effective in raising awareness, but it seems like the millions of dollars of donations they receive could be put to better use.
I agree with you and respect your opinion and all, but if I were to choose a charity, world vision would not be the one. It's run by a fundamentalist religious group that caters only to those it approves of, I.e. My friend's lesbian sister wasn't allowed to even volunteer with them purely because of her sexual orientation
Hey frezned, have you heard of World Vision's 30 HOUR FAMINE events? I've loved participating, and I think it's an especially great way to "get off your bum." =]
I just sponsored a child named Esther through World Vision! Your video helped convince me to make this choice. Thanks, Tom!
