Very nice ! I suggest all of you listen to Mato Nanji or Joe Bonamassa ... Wolf Mail is another i would hear... Pls don´t take this comment as a comparison, but I prefere the guys I named in this msg.
@the4octavewonder Yeah, but it would only be half as enjoyable. It's fast, but I don't give a damn. Don't get me wrong, I love power metal and all that good stuff, but sometimes enough is enough...
Will you ever learn, speed is NOT the key. I don't care about this crazy sweeping skills and his abillity to play left hand and right hand. It got no soul or feeling at all. Its like a car consisting of a chassis and a motor. I would rather listen to 20 seconds solo by a blues guitarist, than 3 minutes solo by some "Look at me, im the sweepy, legato, arpeggio monster, i play 4000 notes a second"-guitarist
@TheFutski exactly but do hope the left and right hand comment wasnt towards hendrix cause hendrix was the first person to bring sound effects to guitars in his solos and not just orderly tactile playing he knew when to transition from 3 chord to 1 to 2 and to make it squeal on the right notes. making soul appear in his solo
Im not saying, that lefthanded guitarist is inferior, i was talking about people, who cares more about speed, and the abillity to play both left and right hand.
@duk309 whoever thinks that has never heard Scott henderson and Allan Holdsworth, or George Benson, or Mike Stern Or John Scofield, Bireli Lagrene, Bill Connors, Al DiMeola...and well ...Les Paul, Charlie Christian, Eddie Lang,...the list of guitarists superior to Mayer is bigger than even his ego
@duk309 This isn't a Skolnick video... It's a John Mayer video... If people wanted to watch Skolnick, then they would search for Skolnick, but they didn't... Stevie Wonder has a better voice than Ray Charles, but that doesn't mean I won't listen to Ray Charles and that Ray Charles isn't one of the greatest singers/ songwriters of all time. Truth is John Mayer is a good guitarist/ artist/ songwriter/ vocalist and people like him for his MUSIC, not in comparison to other artists.
@pucccio you think srv didnt have any inspiration in his life? he had his idols too , from who he developped his playing style, music is about watching other people play and learn from them and copy... not create your own style "never heard before"
@hagojr I'm not defending Mayer, I just don't like your scale. dimebag is only regarded due to his untimely death; Pantera was just as boring and derivative as you say this is.
plus it's retarded to put guitarists on a 1-10 scale because THAT'S NOT HOW IT IS. You can't compare Dimebag or Paige to Mayer any more than you can compare an apple from 25 years ago to an apple now. The world changed, music changed. If Hendrix hadn't been the great pioneer, someone else would've been.
How does ppl even compare a legend as Slash to Mayer? Well Slash may not be some kind of bluesmaster, but hes a damn good guitarist and I think alot better than Mayer. Listen to all of Appetite for Destruction ffs.
But really it doesnt matter, everyone likes different things, you dont really have to be skilled at playing just to get someone to enjoy your music. Just look at Green Day, pretty famous liked band...easiest music ever.
Here's what I don't get about John Mayer... you'll see him jammin' like this live and even at crossroads guitar festival- and it sounds pretty awesome- but then you listen to the songs on his albums, and they are a huge let down... the songs on the album are three chord, guy with the guitar singin to the ladies. Guys like Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Derek Trucks, and even John Bonamasa are his age, twice as good at guitar and song writing. If you don't believe me- youtube these guys.
@stratking88 I believe you mean JOE Bonamassa... ffs
As for his albums v. his live shit... you produce albums to make money and have people come see you live. You play bad ass live shit so people don't think you're a complete douche.
John Mayer is a good guitarist, not a legend and not awesome, but he is certainly no hack. As for a scale, you can't compare Pantera to Hendrix... they aren't even close to the same category. Like comparing apples to salmon. Even though salmon is clearly better.
@JumpyM4c But playing kinda lame stuff on your album only to make money is "selling out." Don't get me wrong- I'm an advertising major- I love money, hope to make tons of it someday... But I'm just saying that guys like Bonamassa, Shepard, and Trucks are true to their roots and are better musicians. It's the marketing of Mayer that in part makes him have so much appeal...Namely to teenage girls.
@stratking88 Have you listened to, Black Rock, Joe's most recent album? About the first 5 songs are "kinda lame," and I'm pretty sure most musicians make albums so that they can be sold and earn them money... Not all, but most. So in a sense, haven't they all sold out at one point or another?
Mayer appealing to a younger audience isn't necessarily a bad thing. I went to a bonamassa concert and was the youngest one there by a good 20 years. I cant say the same about Mayer and his show kicked ass
@stratking88 Because John is super open-minded about music. He loves playing and appreciates all types of genres. It's one of the things I love about him. I wouldn't say those guys are twice as good as John Mayer, but I will say that they don't branch out the way he does. Their focus is on a certain genre/niche and that's where they've stayed. Nothing wrong with that, but there's nothing wrong with John being diverse either.
@lxKazxl Actually yes he does. His roots come completely from the blues. He may have drifted to blues rock and metal but he still knows the blues. And yes I agree, he may be extremely overrated, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't rock.
everything rock n roll is based of the blues, so slash plays an uptempo and distorted for of the blues basically. but seriously, music is meant to be enjoyed not fought over, geez!
@ICanSellYou John Mayer is just promoted as a 'world class' blues player. He's what's readily available on the mass market, Just because the lion is in the cage right in front of you with a sign proclaiming him 'King of the Jungle' doesn't make that lion the most fearsome royal feline on the planet. Probably just a pussy. Keith Moon of the Who used to say 'I'm the best Keith Moon style drummer ever" The current music world is sorely in need of more Keith Moons. Instead we have John Mayer.
@justinwuwuwu Well, by that position you can also state that it brings enjoyment to rip on things ideas,..or even musicians. Or John Mayer, who makes of himself an astoundingly easy and obvious target. If no John Mayer existed, he surely would have been fabricated by the music industrial complex. He's fun to rip on, it brings enjoyment. It's like watching the World War 2 movie and knowing that the Nazis are always the bad guys.
Why does everybody become so obsessed with whos the best? Theyre all different, some with a few more tricks up their sleeve but cmon, be open minded, try a bit of everything and see how it can effect YOUR playing rather than worrying about everyone else's. At the end of the day these people know what it takes to be a good, professional musician, hence a bloody nice career each and THATS what you shoud respect regardless of playing.
@aammcc1234 I wish MORE people would obsess over who is the "best". Be they right or wrong, @ least it sparks interest. Guitar playing today is unappreciated in popular music. Hell, you don't even hear solos anymore! As a teen in the mid-80's, my friends & I would constantly argues over who was the best guitarist, drummer, bassist, keyboard player, etc. (for what it's worth, the consensus was Jimi Hendrix, Neil Peart, Jaco Pastorius, & Keith Emerson respectively) Competition is good!
@gjc82071 Well unfortunately for now, the guitar solo has seen the height of its time in popular music. The truth is that at the moment, the majority of audiences want to hear songs, not a guitar player. I agree that competition is good and healthy but it's annoying how some people take it so seriously and argue for hours that 'he' is the best and actually believe they're right when a lot of the time they' really don't know what they're talking about (I say that as a Musician).
@aammcc1234 Dude, I totally understand what you are saying. 100% But ever hear the saying "Any publicity, is good publicity"? I agree, most do not know what they are saying. Maybe the arguments are different now. Maybe we had a better appreciation of music back then, I don't know. Personally, I'd rather have know nothing idiots arguing over who is the best, than not talking about it all. Sadly, this pretty much seems to be the case. This comes from a fellow musician BTW. (Piano/Keyboards)
@gjc82071 You raise an interesting point of view my friend, Even if people know 'nothing' and argue then at least they are somewhat passionate about things and potentially heighten publicity for certain artists. Most of us know that word of mouth is the best way of building an audience. It just seems unfair that certain 'bad sounding' artists will prevail over better ones in spite of how bad they are from an objective p.o.v. But hey, I suppose that's what makes it all so interesting!
Incorrect. Mayer can't touch Hendrix technically. I love Mayer, but the fact that people even mention Mayer in the same sentence as Hendrix is pure comedy.
@67goldtops How so? Have you heard his covers of Hendrix songs? He nails them and puts his own flavor on them. It's like Back Door Slam playing Red House live, better than the original.
He nails them? What does that mean? Sure he plays good covers. Yet does he bring any of his OWN licks? Does he, using only his hands & the handful of Roger Mayer effects, control and manipulate sound and feedback the way Hendrix could? Does he consistently improvise and recreate his tunes to the point that they're invariably different each time he plays them? Does he take chances with his phrasing & timing whenever he plays? Or does he simply recycle his well-polished, studied licks?
@67goldtops He does consistently improvise, I'm not sure if you've ever seen his concerts. You can watch any number of videos and see that. For example, him and Buddy guy playing "Damn right I've got the blues". They go back and forth and it's certainly not a rehearsed performance. I'm not saying Hendrix was bad, but Mayer is definitely good too. Greats like BB King, Buddy Guy, Clapton, etc seem to agree, otherwise he wouldn't be able to play alongside them. Listen to the trio's WTLI sometime.
I never said Mayer is NOT good. I think he's a great player and I love the fact that he routinely pays homage to his influences. Yet there's plenty of current blues-based players who or more original and who are more diverse than Mayer. You wrote, "I'm not saying Hendrix was bad..." Well, what ARE you saying? Are you somehow under the impression that Mayer's even in the same league as Hendrix? I'm quite sure John would laugh hysterically if you told him that.
@67goldtops How familiar are you with the JM Trio? I get that his Poppy music isn't incredibly technical solo wise (though the solos are good). The trio is just a completely different animal. I absolutely think he's in the same league as Hendrix. His sound is so clean even though he has a lot going on pedal wise. His solo in his cover of California Dreaming gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. I love Hendrix but I think to deny Mayer's talent is wrong. We'll have to agree to disagree here
Once again, I've NOT denied Mayer his talent. I think he's great. Should I reiterate, YET AGAIN? I think Mayer is great. Yet you're arguing he's in Hendrix's league is just silliness. You claim you love Hendrix? What are your thoughts on his "Dolly Dagger" solo from the 1970 Atlanta Pop show? Or his rhythm playing on "Message to Love" from the Band of Gypsys? Or his chord solos from Newport '69? Or his "Rock Me" intro from Monterey Pop? Or his modal solos on "MIdnight" or "Hey Baby"???
@67goldtops I said I love Hendrix, not that he's my favorite. Obviously I think there are better players out there. I live in Seattle - trust me, I've had my share of his music thrown at me over the years. You saying he's nowhere near Hendrix's level IS denying his talent. Different people have different opinions and that's what's great about music. It doesn't mean everyone else's is wrong like you seem to think. You sound too wrapped up in having superior taste to actually enjoy the music.
"Too wrapped up in having superior taste to actually enjoy the music." Well, there's an irretrievably stupid comment. Why have you NOT answered my questions re the aforementioned Hendrix tunes I listed? What, never heard them? See here's the problem. I like to use sports analogies. I'm 43 years old. I was hooping w/ some young kids recently who argued Lebron is the best player ever. I asked their opinion on Elgin Baylor, they were stumped. Never heard of one of THE greatest 4wards ever.
@67goldtops That's just it though, you're coming across as a music snob who wants to be right, rather than someone who actually just enjoys music. I answered with "I said I love Hendrix, not that he's my favorite". I've not seen those, I'm sure I will because I appreciate skilled guitar work. My comment you quoted was referring to your comments. They all have a nose in the air attitude toward them like your word is authority and youcan'tbewrong. Mayer's not the best EVER, but neither was Hendrix
And yeah, I'm quite familiar with John live. I saw him in Philly 2 months ago. Great show. Great band. Yet, NO HENDRIX. Really, John's first release was '99, and he now has, what, 4 albums out? Hendrix's ENTIRE recording career spanned 3 years. Look at the volume of composing. Look at the diversity of playing he produced OVER 40 YEARS AGO. Miles Davis called Hendrix THE single greatest improvisational player he had heard, regardless of instrument. And you argue MAYER is his equal??
@67goldtops John Mayer and the John Mayer Trio are completely different. One is pop one is Blues. I prefer Mayer's versions of Hendrix's material, I also prefer Back Door Slam's versions of Hendrix's material better. Both versions are good, one is just better IMO. Hendrix absolutely was a shaping figure in guitar playing, but his singing was atrocious and I do feel there are betters out there. That's not to discredit him, because he was immensely talented. He just isn't/wasn't the only one.
So yeah, when I hear someone claim they feel Mayer or Davy Knowles version of ANYTHING Hendrix is "better," I just generally laugh & shake my head. I mean if you think Davy has EVER played a version of Red House that can compare to Hendrix's version on HENDRIX IN THE WEST, the only explanation is that you've NEVER LISTENED TO HENDRIX IN THE WEST, lol. So how about it, ANSWER THE PREVIOUS QUESTION regarding the songs I listed.
@67goldtops " I just generally laugh & shake my head." That's my point. Get over yourself, Hendrix isn't the end-all-be-all and neither is your opinion.
"Get over yourself.." Silliness. Tell you what...I'll get over myself as soon as you actually form an INFORMED OPINION. Funny your age isn't posted on your user page. Lots of kiddies feel the need to hide it, as they feel that conceals their youth and inexperience. THAT is MY point. Do your homework. You sound like I used to, defending Jimmy Page to the death when I was a kid. Then I saw SRV the first time in '83 and realized that he URINATED on Page as a player. lol. Hey, good luck.
@67goldtops I have an informed opinion, the two players at hand are Hendrix and Mayer and that's what I was basing it off of. Hey, if those videos change my mind, more power to you because it just means there's better music out there. I'm 24 and have been playing for 13+ years. SRV is great too, and HIS version of Voodoo Chile bests Hendrix. I would say maybe some day when you're older you'll understand tolerance for opinions, but you're already 43 so I doubt you will. Sad, I'm half that and do.
@67goldtops I will absolutely check out that performance though. Davy Knowles is a phenom; he turned Red house to a 9 minute -4 minute improv solo - experience.
Back to the sports analogies. It's great you're passionate about Mayer. Yet there are DOZENS of players to discover before you mention him w/ Hendrix. What are your thoughts of Frank Marino? Glenn Schwartz? Randy Hansen? What do you think of Johnny Winter's album, Still Alive and Well? Ever listen to it? What do you think of the slide playing of Chris Whitley and Mick Taylor? Ever see Michael Bloomfield or Danny Gatton before they died? How about Peter Green or Rory Gallagher? WELL???
@67goldtops Your capital "WELL???" at the end is just screaming "you obviously haven't seen any of these because you're young and naive" which isn't the case and is ridiculously demeaning. I've not heard all of them, I'll give you that - but I have some. Hearing more talented guitarists doesn't change my opinion on the matter. There can be more than one talented person. Onward to more pressing matters than the internet.
"There can be more than one talented person..." lol. YES, that's what I've just informed you of. The REAL point, however, is that there ARE far better than Mayer. There are FAR more original, stylized players who, as you just admitted by revealing the level of offense you took from my previous post, YOU'VE never heard. Thus, as I surmised from the opening of our conversation, YOU speak from a position of ignorance. No shame. You may one day appreciate the tutelage I've just provided.
@67goldtops As I said before, I will check out those videos, and will likely check out the other performances, but seriously - people would take your opinion in much higher regard if you shared it as a fellow music lover rather than someone who is obviously more experienced and has a far better grasp on music than little old us. My offense was because you have an air of arrogance about you rather than passion for music. Even BB King and Buddy Guy are more personable than you.
@67goldtops I think that came out harsher than I had intended. I do wish you the best and thank you for the suggestions, I'll check them out. From one music lover to another, enjoy the rest of the weekend.
If you like blues guitar,.I also recommend Vlatko Stefanovski (try Texas flood 2008 - it gets interesting after 3:00). He's one of the best guitar player alive,..but less known by majority. His strenght is rock/etno/fusion though. ;)
If you're a guitar fan try listening also to Vlatko Stefanovski Texas flood 2008 - it gets interesting after 3:00. ;) Surely one of the best guitar players in the world,..but less known.
I agree that Hendrix is one of the best. But it doesn't change the fact that mayer is also awesome ! I don't think he's as good as Hendrix, but I don't think he's so far from him. And in my opinion, Mayer has a greater voice than Hendrix as, he's just as much of a skilled guitarist, but he's still a really good guitar player though.
Machine Gun from the band Gyps by far is the sickest guitar solo you will ever hear! That solo will distance Jimi by many lengths form any body since SRV(I apologize to SRV die hards me to!)and this guy John Mayer which seems to have the whole package. If your new to Hendrix watch him go off in Machine gun really psyco!
Slash is the single most overrated musician to ever walk the face of the earth, I mean, hes good, but in no way is he the master of the blues even these days. BB King is still around, Clapton, the allman brothers?
Jesus christ youre a fucking idiot if you think slash is the master of blues, HE DOESNT EVEN PLAY THE BLUES!!!
@infinityjet Your a fucking dumbass.. I swear, everybody knows that the blues had a baby and they called it rock and roll. But just because someone plays rock guitar, does not mean that they play blues. Christ, there really is some idiots in the world.
@lxKazxl Ok, I get you're point. But saying Slash is overrated is just not true.
He is a very good guitarist, a very unique guitarist, and it's true, he's not the best by technical means. But then again, being a musician is NOT about being best at playing the guitar. You can say he's guitar skills are overrated, but he is not an overrated musician. And he plays rock with a bluesy core.
@epicalice Surely if you use the pentatonic scale, you're automatically a blues legend.. Damn.. Dipshits who think they know everything. Slash is absolutely cliché, generally boring and he's really not that good.. Bring me just one clip of slash doing something innovative on his guitar, and i will take it back.. But i'm quite safe, cause you ain't gonna find anything even similar to what other artists have accomplished...
@lxKazxl completely and utterly true down to the core of the sun!!!! slash is a nobody compared to john petrucci, andy timmons, joe satriani, and others of THEIR kind. let slash doodle around with his little pentatonic scales. petrucci and timmons will be on top of mount olympus shredding modes melodically for the amusement of god!!!!
Im no guitar theorist, i do however know what makes someone an "icon" or "god". There are atleast 5000 in America alone that can play all of that shit just by listening to it a few times, but they will never become famous. If you want genuine guitarist videos on this website let me know, otherwise continue being some offbrand groupie.
So according to you, becoming famous is what makes you an accomplished guitarist? The reason John Mayer became famous instead of so many other way better players is cos he's a pretty boy, media whore fuck.
Speed is just one aspect of being a great guitar playing. It's a moot point anyway because John can rip off a run with the best of them. What makes him exceptional is how well rounded he is. He plays acoustic as well as he does electric which isn't a given with guitarists. Incredible feel and creativity plus actually composing this stuff rounds out the deal. You don't have to call him a guitar god. First of all he's too young and will get even better, but he is already a great guitarist.
@jujoxande He's not about traditional speed. His vituosity lies in his interpretation and his right hand independence especially on the acoustic is astounding!
THE PENTATONIC SCALE IS NOT GENERIC ONLY A FUCKING RETARD WHO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT MUSIC THEORY OR MUSIC ITSELF WOULD SAY THAT! Its how you play it just like any scale. If anything the pentatonic scale is more challenging since it is less "musical" than most other scales. You shouldn't even listen to music that way to begin with. If you like it good for you if you dont then go find something you do like.
Sure, I can't do what hes doing, but this guy is not all that great that people crack him up to be. Hes just using that same ol generic pentatonic sound
Why are you guys talking so much about Hendrix when the video is clearly of John Mayer who did a fantastic job. Besides I bet none of you are even ok at playing guitar or else you would be praising what you just saw. Grow up guys.
Dreadythedread: totally agree with u, hendrix is the most overrated guitarist ever, yeah he was very talented but really he was just a great live act and was controvercial
Nah, Hendrix is not overrated. He was very talented, but I don't nessecarily believe he was the most talented guitarist there's ever been, but he died very young so didn't reach his full potential, & the reason he gets called the greatest guitarist ever is because he pretty much took what everyone deemed as impressive exiting guitar playing, multiplied it by ten & threw it back at them. He was also able to translate the emotions he was feeling through his guitar, which is harder than it sounds.
@sportsdudes4life really? In my opinion he's overrated, but hey, everybody else has different opinions. I totally respect what you think though, he's obviously very talented.
no they are all blues/rock'n roll players who were influenced by guys like robert johnson, buddy guy, muddy waters, john hurt, jimi, lightning hopkins and so forth. all black ppl...you know, the negro spiritual, the slaves own music, that's were it all started. But Django? he's an early jazz virtuoso...
its true for the MOST part that the most influential blues players are black... BUT thats because they were the founders that laid the ground work. now days color isnt as big of a factor because shits hard for everyone now. so everyone has something to sing about
every guitarist is doin' alright as long as they settle in2 their own style....obviously different influences help 2 define these individual playng styles...music shud never b reduced 2 'he/she play's betta tan tha other' crap....find wot u prefer and simply enjoy!!
I saw yngwie play the "blues" when he was 20 years old and let me tell me u john mayer is not a pimple on yngwie's ass playing blues...! joe bonnamassa, who destroys mayer period, was sitting next to me watching Yngwie in 2004 , and when he did red house, his jaw dropped. mayer's talented songwriter, guitar hero?? not even close!
Yngwie can play the shit out of most people, but he has no feel for the blues. I'm not trying to say he's just a shredder with no emotion cos he's not, he's just got a unique style, but I've watched several videos of him covering blues tracks, & let me tell you, he has nothing on John Mayor, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughan. This is just one genre though, I'm not trying to call him a bad player.
HOW FUCKIN DARE U PUT THIS QUEEF IN THE TOP 10 GUITAR PLAYERS IN THE SAME LIST WITH JIMI PAGE ..HENDRIX DAVID GILMOUR AND BB KING...FUCK NO...

Anybody who thinks Mayer is among the greatest guitarist in the world has never heard alex skolnick play.

Chromatype 1 year ago
@duk309 This isn't a Skolnick video... It's a John Mayer video... If people wanted to watch Skolnick, then they would search for Skolnick, but they didn't... Stevie Wonder has a better voice than Ray Charles, but that doesn't mean I won't listen to Ray Charles and that Ray Charles isn't one of the greatest singers/ songwriters of all time. Truth is John Mayer is a good guitarist/ artist/ songwriter/ vocalist and people like him for his MUSIC, not in comparison to other artists.

Pingkonk 1 year ago
Here's what I don't get about John Mayer... you'll see him jammin' like this live and even at crossroads guitar festival- and it sounds pretty awesome- but then you listen to the songs on his albums, and they are a huge let down... the songs on the album are three chord, guy with the guitar singin to the ladies. Guys like Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Derek Trucks, and even John Bonamasa are his age, twice as good at guitar and song writing. If you don't believe me- youtube these guys.
stratking88 1 year ago
@stratking88 I believe you mean JOE Bonamassa... ffs
As for his albums v. his live shit... you produce albums to make money and have people come see you live. You play bad ass live shit so people don't think you're a complete douche.
John Mayer is a good guitarist, not a legend and not awesome, but he is certainly no hack. As for a scale, you can't compare Pantera to Hendrix... they aren't even close to the same category. Like comparing apples to salmon. Even though salmon is clearly better.
JumpyM4c 1 year ago
@JumpyM4c But playing kinda lame stuff on your album only to make money is "selling out." Don't get me wrong- I'm an advertising major- I love money, hope to make tons of it someday... But I'm just saying that guys like Bonamassa, Shepard, and Trucks are true to their roots and are better musicians. It's the marketing of Mayer that in part makes him have so much appeal...Namely to teenage girls.
stratking88 1 year ago
@stratking88 Have you listened to, Black Rock, Joe's most recent album? About the first 5 songs are "kinda lame," and I'm pretty sure most musicians make albums so that they can be sold and earn them money... Not all, but most. So in a sense, haven't they all sold out at one point or another?
Mayer appealing to a younger audience isn't necessarily a bad thing. I went to a bonamassa concert and was the youngest one there by a good 20 years. I cant say the same about Mayer and his show kicked ass
JumpyM4c 1 year ago
@stratking88 Because John is super open-minded about music. He loves playing and appreciates all types of genres. It's one of the things I love about him. I wouldn't say those guys are twice as good as John Mayer, but I will say that they don't branch out the way he does. Their focus is on a certain genre/niche and that's where they've stayed. Nothing wrong with that, but there's nothing wrong with John being diverse either.

Music is not a competition, let's just all enjoy it for goodness sakes! (=
justinwuwuwu 1 year ago 35
@justinwuwuwu Well, by that position you can also state that it brings enjoyment to rip on things ideas,..or even musicians. Or John Mayer, who makes of himself an astoundingly easy and obvious target. If no John Mayer existed, he surely would have been fabricated by the music industrial complex. He's fun to rip on, it brings enjoyment. It's like watching the World War 2 movie and knowing that the Nazis are always the bad guys.
korgri 1 year ago
Why does everybody become so obsessed with whos the best? Theyre all different, some with a few more tricks up their sleeve but cmon, be open minded, try a bit of everything and see how it can effect YOUR playing rather than worrying about everyone else's. At the end of the day these people know what it takes to be a good, professional musician, hence a bloody nice career each and THATS what you shoud respect regardless of playing.
aammcc1234 1 year ago 37
@aammcc1234 I wish MORE people would obsess over who is the "best". Be they right or wrong, @ least it sparks interest. Guitar playing today is unappreciated in popular music. Hell, you don't even hear solos anymore! As a teen in the mid-80's, my friends & I would constantly argues over who was the best guitarist, drummer, bassist, keyboard player, etc. (for what it's worth, the consensus was Jimi Hendrix, Neil Peart, Jaco Pastorius, & Keith Emerson respectively) Competition is good!
gjc82071 3 months ago
@gjc82071 Well unfortunately for now, the guitar solo has seen the height of its time in popular music. The truth is that at the moment, the majority of audiences want to hear songs, not a guitar player. I agree that competition is good and healthy but it's annoying how some people take it so seriously and argue for hours that 'he' is the best and actually believe they're right when a lot of the time they' really don't know what they're talking about (I say that as a Musician).
aammcc1234 3 months ago
@aammcc1234 Dude, I totally understand what you are saying. 100% But ever hear the saying "Any publicity, is good publicity"? I agree, most do not know what they are saying. Maybe the arguments are different now. Maybe we had a better appreciation of music back then, I don't know. Personally, I'd rather have know nothing idiots arguing over who is the best, than not talking about it all. Sadly, this pretty much seems to be the case. This comes from a fellow musician BTW. (Piano/Keyboards)
gjc82071 3 months ago
@gjc82071 You raise an interesting point of view my friend, Even if people know 'nothing' and argue then at least they are somewhat passionate about things and potentially heighten publicity for certain artists. Most of us know that word of mouth is the best way of building an audience. It just seems unfair that certain 'bad sounding' artists will prevail over better ones in spite of how bad they are from an objective p.o.v. But hey, I suppose that's what makes it all so interesting!

ROCKSTARCRANE
Incorrect. Mayer can't touch Hendrix technically. I love Mayer, but the fact that people even mention Mayer in the same sentence as Hendrix is pure comedy.
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops How so? Have you heard his covers of Hendrix songs? He nails them and puts his own flavor on them. It's like Back Door Slam playing Red House live, better than the original.
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@oc0dyc
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops He does consistently improvise, I'm not sure if you've ever seen his concerts. You can watch any number of videos and see that. For example, him and Buddy guy playing "Damn right I've got the blues". They go back and forth and it's certainly not a rehearsed performance. I'm not saying Hendrix was bad, but Mayer is definitely good too. Greats like BB King, Buddy Guy, Clapton, etc seem to agree, otherwise he wouldn't be able to play alongside them. Listen to the trio's WTLI sometime.
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@oc0dyc
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops How familiar are you with the JM Trio? I get that his Poppy music isn't incredibly technical solo wise (though the solos are good). The trio is just a completely different animal. I absolutely think he's in the same league as Hendrix. His sound is so clean even though he has a lot going on pedal wise. His solo in his cover of California Dreaming gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. I love Hendrix but I think to deny Mayer's talent is wrong. We'll have to agree to disagree here
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@oc0dyc
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops I said I love Hendrix, not that he's my favorite. Obviously I think there are better players out there. I live in Seattle - trust me, I've had my share of his music thrown at me over the years. You saying he's nowhere near Hendrix's level IS denying his talent. Different people have different opinions and that's what's great about music. It doesn't mean everyone else's is wrong like you seem to think. You sound too wrapped up in having superior taste to actually enjoy the music.
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@oc0dyc
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops That's just it though, you're coming across as a music snob who wants to be right, rather than someone who actually just enjoys music. I answered with "I said I love Hendrix, not that he's my favorite". I've not seen those, I'm sure I will because I appreciate skilled guitar work. My comment you quoted was referring to your comments. They all have a nose in the air attitude toward them like your word is authority and youcan'tbewrong. Mayer's not the best EVER, but neither was Hendrix
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@oc0dyc
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops John Mayer and the John Mayer Trio are completely different. One is pop one is Blues. I prefer Mayer's versions of Hendrix's material, I also prefer Back Door Slam's versions of Hendrix's material better. Both versions are good, one is just better IMO. Hendrix absolutely was a shaping figure in guitar playing, but his singing was atrocious and I do feel there are betters out there. That's not to discredit him, because he was immensely talented. He just isn't/wasn't the only one.
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@oc0dyc
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops " I just generally laugh & shake my head." That's my point. Get over yourself, Hendrix isn't the end-all-be-all and neither is your opinion.
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@oc0dyc
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops I have an informed opinion, the two players at hand are Hendrix and Mayer and that's what I was basing it off of. Hey, if those videos change my mind, more power to you because it just means there's better music out there. I'm 24 and have been playing for 13+ years. SRV is great too, and HIS version of Voodoo Chile bests Hendrix. I would say maybe some day when you're older you'll understand tolerance for opinions, but you're already 43 so I doubt you will. Sad, I'm half that and do.
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@67goldtops I will absolutely check out that performance though. Davy Knowles is a phenom; he turned Red house to a 9 minute -4 minute improv solo - experience.
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@oc0dyc
WELL???
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops Your capital "WELL???" at the end is just screaming "you obviously haven't seen any of these because you're young and naive" which isn't the case and is ridiculously demeaning. I've not heard all of them, I'll give you that - but I have some. Hearing more talented guitarists doesn't change my opinion on the matter. There can be more than one talented person. Onward to more pressing matters than the internet.
oc0dyc 1 year ago
@oc0dyc
67goldtops 1 year ago
@67goldtops As I said before, I will check out those videos, and will likely check out the other performances, but seriously - people would take your opinion in much higher regard if you shared it as a fellow music lover rather than someone who is obviously more experienced and has a far better grasp on music than little old us. My offense was because you have an air of arrogance about you rather than passion for music. Even BB King and Buddy Guy are more personable than you.

I agree that Hendrix is one of the best. But it doesn't change the fact that mayer is also awesome ! I don't think he's as good as Hendrix, but I don't think he's so far from him. He is a very good guitarist, a very unique guitarist, and it's true, he's not the best by technical means. But then again, being a musician is NOT about being best at playing the guitar. So according to you, becoming famous is what makes you an accomplished guitarist? The reason John Mayer became famous instead of so many other way better players is cos he's a pretty boy, media whore fuck.
DaveSustaine 1 year ago
Speed is just one aspect of being a great guitar playing. It's a moot point anyway because John can rip off a run with the best of them. What makes him exceptional is how well rounded he is. He plays acoustic as well as he does electric which isn't a given with guitarists. Incredible feel and creativity plus actually composing this stuff rounds out the deal. You don't have to call him a guitar god. First of all he's too young and will get even better, but he is already a great guitarist.

He was also able to translate the emotions he was feeling through his guitar, which is harder than it sounds.

no they are all blues/rock'n roll players who were influenced by guys like robert johnson, buddy guy, muddy waters, john hurt, jimi, lightning hopkins and so forth. all black ppl...you know, the negro spiritual, the slaves own music, that's were it all started. But Django? he's an early jazz virtuoso...

I'd say SRV innovated quite a bit.

its true for the MOST part that the most influential blues players are black... BUT thats because they were the founders that laid the ground work. now days color isnt as big of a factor because shits hard for everyone now. so everyone has something to sing about
