Actually, CRT monitors are debatable compared to LCD, but ARE superior to LCD monitors in a number of ways. The disparity of reaction by the subjects was probably due to factors unrelated to the "quality" of the image, but in the display method, the form factor of the monitor, and various things too long to list in this box.

My suspicion is that it's possible they reacted because the LCD might seem more like a window than a CRT, and that a CRT looks more like a box with an image.

Firstly, CRT monitors actually use less energy, if the monitor is over a certain size. Got a 14" LCD monitor? You're using more energy than if that monitor was a CRT. This is due to backlighting, primarily.

As for the toxic chemicals, most of any that are involved are a non-factor. You don't eat it or even touch those toxic chemicals.

Stress? No more so.

Sound? Yeah, rarely heard.

Only LCD advantage is size and weight.
