I'd bet the main reason you didn't win the contest is that the "DeLorean time-machine" is sort of an idea that's owned by Back To The Future. If you're gonna use a DeLorean, it has to be something other than a time machine otherwise you're intruding on their story (even though it's done with love and respect etc). Secondary reasons are: the old-timey look was a bit tacky, and not enough visual FX to sell the time traveling.
I too was thinking about doing the dorritos commercial and putting my D in it. Wanted to stay away from the BTTF theme though..Maybe thats why they didn't like yours.
