This is the nightmare of "tous ingenieurs du son." Vocal mic dies. Bad cord? Stella Artois spilt into the mixing console? Who can say? But in all fairness to The Commander, there isn't a lot he can do about it, except to keep on singing.
This stuff happens to all of us. Always has; always will!

It looks like Farfisa Gold that Fisher is playing.Interesting , because it was overbub , but obviously Brooker wanted to sing. He did so much drugs in those days that he was not even aware that sound is not there.Look at his reaction.The background has been released on one of CDs.It is a stereo version and in no way do they play it live here. I will check and let you know a Cd. It is one of the "anthologies".

Yes, it's on the 30th anniversary, but with vocals. AWSoP was released just backing track as well.
It was common practice on tv shows to have the lead singer sing live and the rest of the band mime…and we can't even be sure of what exactly went wrong.

To me it seems to have overdubbed lyrics over the original track, much like they did a couple of times for AWSoP…Ironic, given what happens to Brooker's microphone…
That means also that a separate, yet unreleased, track for the original recording exist (or at least that it existed back ten).
What is Fisher playing? Doesn't seem an hammond to me…
