Bottom line: Paterson seems to be trying to apply "quick fixes", only thing is they're moves that are BAD for the state. We do not need more taxes. We already have far too many of them. If you decide to tax beverages, let's level the playing field and apply it to ALL of them. For those who think diet beverages are better, check out some of the ingredients on them. Some of those are just as dangerous and should be taxed too.
I heard the CEO of a major company call the refundable deposit a tax and there's at least 17 bottles in the cart. I'm not sure if the Capri drinks have deposits. If so that's more as I didn't count them. So that amount can be deducted as it is NOT a tax but a deposit so the bottle or can doesn't up as waste. Anybody that would buy that much unhealthy junk should pay taxes for their increased medical costs that the rest of us will have to pick up.
@newyorkhelps It's not up to you, the Governor, or the government to decide WHAT people drink. And since you're busy complaining, why aren't you speaking out against liquor? Narcotics? Cigarettes? Those are all bad for you too and yet we're still free to choose whether or not to buy, eat, ingest, or smoke them. The day the government - NY or US - starts telling their citizens what they should and should not eat or drink, is the day we will be 1 step closer to being a communist country.
In Canada we have two taxes on everything. It's 13% on what you buy. It was 15 % last year, now they will be making us pay 23% by the end of July on everything!
What a line of bovine fecal matter. Why complain about a few bucks, when you go out and spend outrageous amounts for bottled water, when tap water is just fine?
@RocRizzo some tap water has chemicals added....giving it a weird taste. My parents have a well at their home (they live in the country) so I know what pure water tastes like. The bottled water DOES taste more like that, and for me it tastes a lot better than the horrible tap water with whatever stuff they've added to it around here.
