Classilla isn't a bad choice for simple browsing on OS 9, there used to be a trick for ResEditing Flash to get YouTube to work as well, but doubt that works anymore!
@DarkBallYE No, it wasn't, but the PowerPC processor commands are quite similar, so it "works". Just minus all the enhancements that came with the G3 - just about all processor command translations go through, just slower than with the G3.
Good luck with your PowerMac 7500 - those are good machines - and the processor is upgradable too if you know what to look for!
@sopranojam Good News: I've got everything done successfully.
Bad News: I can't (or likely don't know how to) copy vmlinux from my Linux partition to my Mac partition. How did you manage to copy the kernel to your Mac partition? :P
No, the 3400c is PCI based but the 1400 series are NuBus based. You'd need a special flavor of linux to work on NuBus... Do some research, and good luck.
@nolanhester1 - I've looked around, but it seems as though the ppc build of Arch Linux requires New World ROM, and won't work with Old World Macs. Think you could point me in the right direction? Is this even possible with Old World Macs? I'm using BootX.
@aufsturz Thanks, I've used Classilla and it's all right, but there's just too many limitations with the frameworks of OS 9 browsers, you can only do so much with them, even with Classilla. On Ubuntu I've used Galeon, and it's a very fast, reliable Gecko-based browser, that runs circles around any OS 9 browser, and is MUCH faster, and less bloated than FireFox.
I heard you mention that you are using Linux due to the lack of a modern web browser for Mac OS 9. I ran into the same problem myself with my G3 iBook and I can tell you that Classilla is a pretty up-to-date web browser, currently being developed for Mac OS 8.6/9.x, based on Firefox's codebase. You should give it a try. I certainly was surprised at how well it ran.

Hi sopranojam, I'd love to know more about the installation process!
My PB3400c is permanently repeating the installation procedure after the start with BootX, then runs into a failure before configuring the bootloader...and so on.
The information on the Ubuntu community site about 'old world' installation was note very helpful, so a little bit of assistance would be nice...
@DrHerbMelnick Give me the specifications of your 3400c, and the version of Mac OS that's installed. Also, I'd like to know the version of Boot X, and the distribution/ version number of Linux you're trying to install?
Well, actually I own several Powerbooks of the 3400c series. At least two have the full RAM equipment of 144MB. The HDDs are 30GB and 80GB. Mac OS is 9.2.2 and OS X is 10.2.8. BootX version is 1.2.2. The Linux I tried to install was also 9.10.
Probably there's not enough space in the comment box to describe the different installation steps. Let me know if you prefer a different communication channel.
this was a cool little video hey do you still have the od powerbook?

@kbhasikevin - exactly right! BootX is an extension and control panel.
sopranojam 8 months ago
I guess that bootx is the first extension that loads, and if you select Mac, it'll allow the rest of the extensions to load, right?

I didn't think Ubuntu was built for pre-G3 PowerBooks O.o I'm still tying to get Debian on my PowerMac 7500, but to little avail :\
