alot of people argue back and forth about who has been through a stronger storm.. and you know? sand, sea foam, trash and plant matter.. soaked wet.. cold.. hittin ya in the face, is a litttttle hard to differentiate between say after 100 miles an hour. trade blows with a wet towel, swing as hard as you can and yo uget a picture. i was in operations and emergency management when i windows were breathing. listening to incoming 9-1-1 calls in beaumont when they burst on us.
i'm from lake charles and when rita hit i had to go to frierson, bossier city, and shreeveport. i had to stay for like a month and a half, i was so pissed off because i couldn't go home. we didn't eat any real food, just sandwiches and microwave meals. in frierson 13 people had to stay in a two bedroom hot ass trailer. hurricane knocked the water system out so we had to bathe with rainwater.
now, I stand outside and film hurricanes I've experienced (Lili, Katrina, and Rita) I would NEVER be that crazy to do the crap people are doing on here. Rita was stronger than Katrina (I went shopping during Katrina), Katrina was just the most devastating because of the levees.
Its sad to see people like these running around trying to kill themselves, while I watched in panic as a tree fell on my grandma's house.(she wasn't in it thank god)
Okay, I've done some wild and crazy things in my life, but this is near suicidal! Take it from a person who evacuated for three hurricanes (Andrew, Lili, and Rita)
Hurricane Rita WAS MORE powerful than Katrina, stop watching CNN and go to your local news!!......Also Rita was refered to as the forgotten hurricane, due to the issues in New Orleans, the levy broke thats what caused the flooding...
Rita was worse then katrina, and rita didnt get any news play at all, this is downright stupid of anyone to do this, not because you might get hurt (which i hope you did, u deserve it) but becasue rita detroyed homes, not left them and just flooded, but took them away ripped them to peices.
to the person who downplayed rita. do me a favor, ride down to cameron and creole louisiana and will quickly change your position. cameron and creole looked very similar and perhaps worse than waveland miss and bay st louis.
such a title is an ignorant one, especially considering that rita had a lower pressure than katrina. both storms devastated plenty, and just bc the loss of human life due to rita was smaller than katrina, doesnt mean that it did not devastate the region. clearly, someone who made that comment, had not consideration for those of us who lost our homes, and has no idea what it is to return to a place where you have lived all your life only not to recognize 250 miles of it.
Hurricane Rita was horrible I have friends in Cameron LA. Cameron was obliterated. There were at least 66 tornadoes that touched down with the storm. The people down there who have been through a Cat 4 hurricane swear that this was a cat 5. don't always believe what tv and gov't tell ya they lied and covered up Rita!
The most aggrivating part about this hurricane was the traffic, Houston didnt follow evacuation rules and the residents ran out of there like bats out of hell! Then when my town tryed to get out all of houston was blocking the roads and we ended up in a small church about an hour from our home! Its really sad because as you said nothing happened and to people like us who lost so much and nearly died in that storm its frustrating to know that this will probably happen again.
Rita was not like Katrina in that the residents of western Louisiana have more sense that the folks from eastern Louisiana and know to get the heck out of town when a monster hurricane is heading thier way.
Actually Rita Made Landfall as a Breif Hurricane then lost Hurricane and Tropical Storm Strength and Moved Inland as a Depresion. And Yeah Rita was like Katrina
Response to Rita moved inland as a tropical depression. I was in Lake Charles, La. which is 50 miles inland when the hurrricane hit. I was working for FEMA OEP and at 2:30am a large work boat at the Port of Lake Charles recorded sustained winds for 10 minutes straight at 120 mph, yes ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY. ten seconds is a gust, 10 minutes is sustained. Tidal surge after the storm reached 9 feet MSL.
Just to let you know, Rita was like Katrina in many ways. Some towns were completely wiped out due to Rita. The only reason Katrina was worse is because it hit a more populated area.
