  • Hello everyone, I just happened to find this video and wanted to comment. The video is of IHRA 2008 world champion Terry Haddock in his Nitro Funny Car at U.S. 131 dragway in Michigan. I work with Terry shooting promo video on occasion. I get a bit dissapointed when people comment on things that they know nothing about, and yet they sound completely confident in their explaination of something. I assure you this motor did explode and did fail.

  • The engine does not explode or fail. These engines have been modified to lower the compression which is made up for by the huge turbocharger. These engines must run at high RPM to cause the turbo to create boost to burn all the fuel. If they fall below a certain RPM the turbo does not create enough compression and unburned fuel comes out the exhaust like a backfire. You can here this engine bog down and the turbo also slows thus the engine starts to miss due to lack of compression.

  • It sounds as though you know what you're talking about when it comes to turbo chargers. But this clip is of an 8000 horsepower supercharged nitro burning motor. And it did exploded. I was standing 20 feet from it when it happened.
