  • are you still using Photomatix to combine you shots

  • hmm the images look really flat, shouldnt this only be used when shooting images with harsh light?

  • Is the "Finished HDR" edited on a program? Thanks

  • Okay, so what's the song used at the end of the video? :)

  • Good stuff as usual. Always enjoy the casual presentation style you use. Sorry about all the negative replies people are posting.

  • Comment removed

  • @zoobiewa sorry that you don't like it, I was just sharing my stuff with others.

  • It's a bit lame how you say "I... in the past underexposed... now I'm going to overexpose..." without giving any explanation for why you do what you do. Are you some sort of robot. I believed in you before but I just got skeptical.

  • oh my god i can't wait to get this camera

  • Why is my menu white, your menu is black!?

  • @therightpremiums your settings, you can go in to the menu and change it.

  • @drumat5280 Thanks Dave!

  • How do you get the three photos like that... And how does the exposure change itself.... Basically how do u set up for HDR

  • You are a very cool person :D & of course thank you for this wonderful video and the tutorial.

    Greetings from Germany :)

  • thanks for the video! very intersting

  • So how do you actually merge these photos into one HDR shot?

  • did you recorded end of your video with t2i and do you use magic lantern ?

  • Worth watching are the first 6 minutes. after that unrelated stuff.

What I was missing is how to put the HDR together after taking three shots. With Photoshop?

  • so you took the best of three photos and photoshoped them together?

  • should i wait for canon 650d till feb or buy canon 550d ...im buying camera for video ...canon 650d might be better than 550d ..im confused so plzzz help me

  • hey there, when ya shooting and not looking through the view finder aint u supposed to cover up the view finder to stop the light comin in throught it... using the rubber thing that attached to the canon strap?

  • Here is a tip for you Dave, take an HDR photo with 5 exposures, merge 5 different types of HDR photos in photomatix (like a Dark black and white one, a Colourful one, an Underexposed one, etc.) and then merge those photos into Photoshop, you will get great results.

  • Great videos Dave! Keep them coming!

  • hey dave! how do you get this great sound of your voice without too much noises of the cars, wind, etc etc?

  • @peter1058 the rode videomic just out of frame.

  • @drumat5280 thx for the answer :-)

  • my camera only takes one picture not 3, when i set 3 exposures like you did

  • @cavenuts1 You have to have the self timer set to 2 seconds. It will not take the 3 shots if you don't set the timer.

  • @cavenuts1 or set it to continuous, but the timed one is better cause you're not shaking the camera.

  • THANKS ! :D really helped

  • what's with the Russian song? how'd find it?

  • hey what video editing program do you use?

  • HI Dave..as I a mostly used my 550D for movies, so with pictures i m not so good, this might be the stupidest question, When have all the settings like u do on my camera, but when i press the shutter button its only taking one picture instead of 3, what m i doing wrong? please help

  • @5sunny01 hey there ~

You should do Exposure Compensation ,,Exposure Bracketing

First press Menu then press the Q button then go to Exposure Cop/AEB settings ...

now rotate with the wheel where is the Shutter button until you see it set to -1 0 +1...

then press ok ,,,,,press the shutter button to take the picture ...it will Automatically take 3 Picture with Different Exposures ....

  • @bigsmilesh thanks for replying, I did that and I tried it and its still taking one picture....:( what other settings u think there might be?

  • @5sunny01 Change the Shooting mode from single shooting to Continuous the when you press the Shutter button keep your finger on it ......

and another thing is just change the shooting mode to self Timer 2 seconds ....if it doesn't work ,,wait for Dave's answer :)

  • @bigsmilesh I tried that, I changed to Continuous mode, and when i press the shutter it takes about 6 to 8 pictures. Thank you for helping....i think i m gonna reset the camera settings. and see what happens..

  • canon 600d first movie.

  • Hey Dave.

Really enjoy your informative, no nonsense videos as i've just bought a Canon 600d with kit lens. Was wondering if you could watch my video and give me a few pointers on how to improve on them. Video is: Canon 600d 1st video.

    Many thanks.

  • my video keeps coming out pixly never as good as yours

  • what do you think is the best setting for brightness of the lcd monitor that will be the end result like what it will look like when you bring it to the pc?

  • this is the type of videos ive been waiting for

  • seems to me like most of the video effects are the same as image so ill just have to learn how to transfer what i know in images to video

  • Excellent tutorial Dave, i take my HDR shots in the exact same way, i don't do the whole histogram checking though.

  • hey dave i also have a t2i but my footage is always grainy and noisy any idea why ?

  • @FantasyFreerun can you link to one of your bad ones so I can look?

  • @drumat5280 /watch?v=qxY3fy1K520 Here you got some short Hd footage , and thanks for quick answer .

  • @FantasyFreerun Looks like you might want add more light to the shot and then try different rendering settings.

  • @drumat5280 Ok thanks what rendering settings do u have ? if you have time maybe you can check out my videos /sid

  • @FantasyFreerun if your shooting manual, make sure your ISO is as low as possible... get more light with your aperture settings then you ISO settings, hope that might help a little.

  • Hi Dave, can you just list exactly what settings you used when you filmed this segment? I have a 600D and my video looks consistently washed out and lifeless where as yours looks rich and dynamic. I would really appreciate your input. Thanks, Tony.

  • @tonerob which segment exactly? The one where I am talking?

  • @drumat5280 All of it really, your introduction and parade footage looks great with strong colours and definition. Also the motion heavy sections (like in the boat) look good, I get a lot of motion blur where you don't seem to suffer that. Really I'm trying to solve the 'washed out' look that I get and that you don't. Cheers, Tony.

  • @tonerob mostly iso 100, shutter 125 for when I shoot 60fps and the f-stop is all over the place I used the nd filter that I have listed on my gear page.

  • @drumat5280 OK thanks. Do you normally shoot shutter=1/60 for 30fps? (I'm using 1/50 for 25fps PAL) Do you change the Picture Style settings at all? I have been trying a few different styles but with little success.

  • @tonerob

He probably used the Neuman Films color presets to bring the color out nice and purdy. :)

Great work Dave, Interesting music at the end. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your tutorials and commentaries.

  • Great vid, as always. I'll have to try the over expose trick. I usually do an under exposure. I noticed you used the nuetral setting instead of the landscape setting. I am curious why? In one of your previous vids you used landscape. I am guessing easier to adjust in post? Also did you try the b & w preset in photomatix on this shot? I bet it would look pretty awesome.

  • I wish I'd have known how to do this before my recent trip to St Lucia, all my shots with sky in them are totally washed.. and the resulting video wasn't as good as I'd hoped. But at least I now know thanks to you. As always, a very well put together tutorial. Thanks.

  • you should do a HDR timelapse tutorial

  • Amazing video ,,i liked the shots at the end

btw i have a tutorial in my channel how to do HDR from single shot

    Raw or JPEG

  • also, in a previous video, you said you couldn't figure out how to make the values go down in Magic Lantern... ("set" makes it go up)

you can press the Play (>) button, and it goes down :)

  • Great staff I'm going to try it ... do you also have a Facebook acc...

  • @renzotalara yes, the link is at the top of my YT channel.

  • to shift the exp bracketing, use the left and right arrows... not Av + roller combination. :)

  • you use the same bg music. ^_^ i like it.

  • Great job Dave, its great to see the settings up close and see the results up front. You mentioned you shot all in neutral did you leave everything at 0 ?

    keep up the good work.

  • the music does not fit the video

  • Congrats dave continued the amazing job you. All your videos you are amazing

  • Nice vid Dave. I see quiet a bit more character in comparison to some of the earlier vids.

  • Hey Dave love your videos. I may have missed it but have you done a tutorial on how you do your slo mo shots? I really love how awesome they look!

  • Sorry, i had to watch this video twice because i was distracted by the lady at the bottom right corner. lols

  • Cool video Dave. Love your shots in the end!

  • Love the HDR photo Dave ! great shot ;) Im going to go out and try this now . loved the video at the end aswell , goes great with the music.

  • dave, on the T3i, is the AGC disabled by enabling manual audio levels? mine was on auto and after i saw the audio levels that idea came to my mind.

  • hey Dave, what do you think about the Lytro Camera?

  • @2isTheNew1 gosh I have never heard of it, what is it?

  • @drumat5280 it's supposed to be a camera that like photographs the light field and you are able to take a picture and change the DOF in post. check out there website for more info, maybe you could do a review/ rant on it..

  • @drumat5280 its just an app not a camera

  • @drumat5280 Shoot Now, Focus Later

  • Great video Dave- really liked it- and very informative too.

  • im in Westcliffe Colorado for the week. been waiting for this tut. great job dave and thanks

  • Wow don't you just love Colorado? I wouldn't even think about moving out of state. Great video!

  • Russian song? Didn't expect that........

  • @pav2k yea, I really like how the song went with the slow motion in the beginning.

  • @pav2k Oh, I'm russian but haven't realisied this song is russian as well before I saw it's name =)

  • quick question..what picture style did you use for the video clips at the end? and did you do any post production on those, such as contrast, saturation or something else? thank you! PS: you should totally get the new Final Cut Pro X...it's got some good features for adjusting exposure and stufff for videos..plus, you don't have to convert your videos anymore before importing them. Cheers!

    -Danny from Canada

  • @TwoPlusFourIsSe7en all neutral style. Sorry I can't use FCP is have a PC.

  • awesome tutorial! what software did you use for the HDR?

  • who else thought Half Life when Dave said Blue Mesa Lake?

  • @barbar84 Maybe if it were Black Mesa Lake... :D

  • Beatiful landscape you have there. And thanks for the tutorial. Really good.

  • hi Dave nice foootage but i just feel u need to start grading ur footage. Will make it look really cool

  • haha, at the end. Even if you did have a diffuser, it would just shine light in your face defeating the purpose of wearing a hat :)

  • @drumat5280 Thanks for the reply. I check out your gear page. :)

  • Dave, on which shuttertime and framerate are you filming here?

Great video, following it for a time now!

  • @venhuffie 1/50th or 1/125

  • Nice one mate, So in the end did you merge the lighter and the darker one ?

  • @06lellis I processed both sets, I should have both up on my Flickr page pretty soon.

  • @drumat5280 processed?

  • @06lellis some of them yes, not all. Just the 3-way CC.

  • @drumat5280 Ah so they werent mixed?

  • I want to move to Colorado. Thanks for video Dave

  • What was your mic for this, I didn't notice a lav' mic, but the sound sounded very close up. :)

  • @thatsamthomson It is the Rode Videomic I have it listed on my Gear page

  • HDR is very cool but maybe try some HDR panoramas. ive done a few myself and they turn out amazing!

  • That photo was EPIC! x3

  • Q: Do you simply edit the original video file straight from the camera or do you convert it to something?

  • @TSMultimediaTS with Premiere CS5 I just drop the mov's in to the timeline and start editing.

  • thanks for the tuturial, I may have to try something like this on my 600d, also great footage at the end, looked great

  • Nice vid and hdr tutorial.

In the second part of the video the people seems to out of focus sometimes - especially on scenes with a lot of people. Maybe you can try to use a higher aperture for these scenes?

  • @sdfunkyb I had a couple of clips that where out of focus, but I liked them so much that I kept them in the video.

  • you can also use the d-pad arrows left and right instead of going to Q

  • @freakaefari thanks.

  • @freakaefari For what?

  • @Ghostmaker1970 to move the entire 3 stops to the left or right in the exposure compensation menu

  • @freakaefari :) thank you

  • very nice like it...

  • First oh great video and cool beer :)
