Albert deSalvo was never charged because he was likely NOT the Boston Strangler. He wanted a cushy place to live (state hosp) as rapists are not well liked in "the clink".
This should really be called the worst AMERICAN crimes of the 20th Century. Andrei Chikatilo, The Monster of the Andes and Javed Iqbal Mughal for example.
I love watching american shows because they rarely acknowledge anything outside of their own country and and often refer to the US as "the world".
"modern phenomenon of serial and mass murder"? I have to disagree with the idea that serial, spree and mass murderers are a 'modern phenomenon'. The fact is it was much easier to kill multiple people and get away with it before the 1950's. Forensic technology has meant the crimes of people that kill over extended periods inconsistently can be linked to each other and traced back to the guilty.
dna excludes desalvo as killing at least one victim. a lot was pushlished in newspapers at the time of how a victim was killed. i think he was fed a lot of the details by police.in a lot of other cases they had good suspects
when there's a serial killer on the loose people who wanna murder somebody could you this as an opportunity to commit a crime in similar fashion thinking it's gonna get pinned on the serial killer. this could be the case here
@orionion both u & gonnatapthat r right. theres a documentary stating what u both have said. i found it very compelling. amazed desalvo is still considered the strangler. i ALWAYS, b4 seeing the docu., wondered about how they were investigating crimes, particularly of this nature back then. the incompetence or inaccurate theories mustve been huge & the same could b said w/ what they knew then vs. whats known now. 2 think the sheer no.'s of possibly innocent ppl then & further back. @TheCaptainLulz I agree that it may potentially be the century with the highest death toll but I don't know if it was the most 'violent'. The Spanish Inquisition for example was notably violent, Atila the Hun, Caligula etc.

I highly doubt this is the most violent century in history, what it is , is the most documented century in history.
It used to be that if you wanted to kill people you would go to war, anyone could join the lines back in medieval times and could kill people most brutally. and no one would think twice, in fact they were often rewarded for their brutality.
The only reason we perceive "this century" to be more violent is because of improved global communications. A quick examination of history quickly shows that life today is much better, secure and longer than in previous times.
.
Even though life is still not yet perfect nor fair for all, as a race, we have NEVER had is so good!
@dirtydonki um there wasnt 200,000,000 deaths from war in any other century, most of them because there werent that many humans. Mao killed 100 million, joe stalin 60 million, Hitler and WW2 25 million, WW1 killed 10 million. The 20th century was absolutely the most voilent.
@TheCaptainLulz to be fair these dictators had better resources for mass murder than people before them. im sure if vad the implaler had machine guns gas chambers and bombs he would kill a lot more people
@TheCaptainLulz oh and as far as crime goes theres always been serial killers its just more recognized and reported today then before nothings never really changed
@pacheco28 It's also much harder to get away with murder, nowadays. Population density was much smaller back then and there was virtually no forensic science.
@TheCaptainLulz There's a difference between most VIOLENT and DEADLIEST. Antiquity was almost unimaginably violent. The Romans watched people maim and kill each other for sport. Every ancient culture that relied on rain for irrigation engaged in ritual human sacrifice. Genocide was just another aspect of a state's foreign policy. There would be no metallurgy without slavery under the threat of torture. The Spartans had a helot hunting season. And then there's crucifixion and burning, of course
@KayBeeEee1983 200 million is still the most violent and the deadliest. Stalin used starvation on the ukraine, worked others to death. At least the roman et al deaths where over in a day. Starvation takes weeks to months of painful slow torture, same with being worked to death. The gas chambers wherent exactly painless, though atleast they where quick.
@TheCaptainLulz Gross number deaths is not a good indicator of violence. Look at it relatively. The average human in antiquity was far more violent and sadistic than the average human in the 20th century. That's the way it seems to me.
Starvation isn't a modern invention of murder. It's even in the Hebrew Bible. During sieges, cities would be forced to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine. No doubt they were forced into cannibalism, too. And sieges lasted YEARS.
@KayBeeEee1983 I do agree that the 20th centruy was the deadliest, but thats only because the techological advancements of the 20th allowed for larger numbers of people to be killed in shorter amounts of time on top of a huge world population boom, but it wasn't be any stretch the most brutal or violent.
I think being hacked to death but sword, pulled apart by horse buggy, or shoot through the heart by crossbow would be a infinitely more painful way to die than by gas chamber or famine.
@TheCaptainLulz@TheOpenMinded12460 The Crusades were gruesome, don't even tell me you think that you like the Aztecs, or senseless murders by Vlad the Impaler, not to mention The Founding Fathers who enslaved people. @1993Kittens Theres literally no evidence that moses even existed. And from what can be gathered of the egyptian histories ramses was regarded as shrewd but fair in his dealings. Theres also little evidence the egyptians used slaves (when they did, it wasnt common) other than for the home.
@dirtydonki No, its not deceptive. In this century, people in modern societies dont have to worry about basic survival, and the majority have lives that revolve around simply being entertained and chasing after material goods. so because everyone has so much individual freedom, and so many corrupting factors in society began emerging, it created the circumstances where many people could be easily mentally corrupted and turn into serial killers and sociopaths, which are unique to modern times

@dirtydonki That's true but the 20th century still had more deaths due to war than any other century in history - the amount of people who died during the two world wars is about 100 million, and the Earth's population has been less than that for most of its history, so it's not really rubbish to say the 20th was the most violent century
@dirtydonki You're right... we HAVE never had it so good. And life is more secure and longer than in previous times... but still, it's a moot point that doesn't take away from the fact that it actually was the most violent century in history.
The 20th century runs circles around other centuries in terms of violent body count (not including disease which I would not consider a violent death. Horrible and painful maybe, but not violent). WWII alone beats most of the other centuries.

Crime is not partial to any particular society or economic system. The reason why the West appears to have more crime is because money dictates what news stores get reported (i.e. the greater the revenue generated from the story, the more the agencies report it)--as opposed to authoritarian dictatorships that control what they want the people to see. Because of this, some of the more important stories get trumped by a missing blond white girl.
Last I heard, the "Jack the Ripper" letters were demonstrated to be an elaborate hoax. Anyone hear any different?

Crime is not partial to any particular society or economic system. The reason why the West appears to have more crime is because money dictates what news stores get reported (i.e. the greater the revenue generated from the story, the more the agencies report it)--as opposed to authoritarian dictatorships that control what they want the people to see. Because of this, some of the more important stories get trumped by a missing blond white girl.

Why is there so many serial killers in USA and in Europe ? It makes you wonder if it's not a social problem.
