The fact is it was much easier to kill multiple people and get away with it before the 1950's. Forensic technology has meant the crimes of people that kill over extended periods inconsistently can be linked to each other and traced back to the guilty.

@TheCaptainLulz I agree that it may potentially be the century with the highest death toll but I don't know if it was the most 'violent'. The Spanish Inquisition for example was notably violent, Atila the Hun, Caligula etc.

I highly doubt this is the most violent century in history, what it is , is the most documented century in history.

It used to be that if you wanted to kill people you would go to war, anyone could join the lines back in medieval times and could kill people most brutally. and no one would think twice, in fact they were often rewarded for their brutality.

@dirtydonki um there wasnt 200,000,000 deaths from war in any other century, most of them because there werent that many humans. Mao killed 100 million, joe stalin 60 million, Hitler and WW2 25 million, WW1 killed 10 million. The 20th century was absolutely the most voilent.

Every ancient culture that relied on rain for irrigation engaged in ritual human sacrifice. Genocide was just another aspect of a state's foreign policy. There would be no metallurgy without slavery under the threat of torture. The Spartans had a helot hunting season. And then there's crucifixion and burning, of course

Starvation takes weeks to months of painful slow torture, same with being worked to death. The gas chambers wherent exactly painless, though atleast they where quick.

@TheCaptainLulz Gross number deaths is not a good indicator of violence. Look at it relatively. The average human in antiquity was far more violent and sadistic than the average human in the 20th century. That's the way it seems to me.

Starvation isn't a modern invention of murder. It's even in the Hebrew Bible. During sieges, cities would be forced to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine. No doubt they were forced into cannibalism, too. And sieges lasted YEARS.

@KayBeeEee1983 I do agree that the 20th centruy was the deadliest, but thats only because the techological advancements of the 20th allowed for larger numbers of people to be killed in shorter amounts of time on top of a huge world population boom, but it wasn't be any stretch the most brutal or violent.

I think being hacked to death but sword, pulled apart by horse buggy, or shoot through the heart by crossbow would be a infinitely more painful way to die than by gas chamber or famine.

The 20th century runs circles around other centuries in terms of violent body count (not including disease which I would not consider a violent death. Horrible and painful maybe, but not violent). WWII alone beats most of the other centuries.

Crime is not partial to any particular society or economic system. The reason why the West appears to have more crime is because money dictates what news stores get reported (i.e. the greater the revenue generated from the story, the more the agencies report it)--as opposed to authoritarian dictatorships that control what they want the people to see.
