there is big difference between using pick and fingers. For me, pick suits sometimes even better than fingers cause you have to concentrate the sound, and pick is great for such "operations" ;)

Ok, everybody's bitchin' about Cliff and Jason... let's get one thing straight: nobody will never fit a young dead rock star shoes, especially when he was a great musician. That's the thing with dead rock stars, they become such a legend that not even a better musician can match his shadow. Anyway, both great, it's just that Jason happens to be alive. Robert, great guy, great player, as good as the others maybe, sure he and Metallica are having fun but IMO he's way better in Suicidal Tendencies.

i always loved how jason identified with the crowd, how he was always kinda that fan who loved metallica and then all of a sudden found himself in the band. i think jason never took the fans for granted and it showed. just like some have said in earlier posts below, his passion showed when he played.

to me personally there's no best bassist in Metallica but all 3 bassists playing fitted in the band and their personatlies Clif's bass style was epic bass solos and woven bass fills combined with awesome backing vocals on Whiplash & Fight Fire With Fire, Jason's bass playing and lead singing vocals on Seek and Destroy made him amazing like Cliff and Robert's slapping finger bass style was terrficc in metallica and it still is all 3 metallica bassists i salute and give my respect to always

When I was 12 I thought Cliff Burton was pretty cool. I was never impressed by Pulling Teeth. Since I've been playing Guitar and Bass now for 10 years I now understand that Cliff Burton was really kinda lame on the bass he just shredded and not even that good. Jason is laid back and seems to actually compose his own stuff that is melodic and pretty, plus he can sing, and he can play super fast, super heavy, he can play anything. I think the pick is used because it's the sound he prefers.
