@XTWIntensity that is how it's described in some stories, but there definitely are many. While making the film I found versions with a black creature, a white creature, an unseen creature. In many stories the tail isn't taken like in the story "Big Toe" another variation you can find in the scary stories treasury book. the earliest version I found was called the Golden arm which was frequently told by Mark Twain, but there are other versions that predate that.
@hasaniwalker Thats very true and all. But i respectfully argue because i have someone who saw what fit the exact description of a tailypo. 5 am in july 2010 in tennessee, my aunt's boyfriend was in the creek because of the crazy mourning humidity and heat. And he saw on the edge a black creature ithe the head of a dog and the head of a rabbit. i have an eyewitness. thats why i seem so sure about its appearence.
I Love this story!! It used to scare me so bad! Me and my sisters used to get in bed with my granny and she'd tell us this story. Except her version had 3 dogs and the creature would come a scratchin on his door saying "I want my taily po" and after it claws open the old mans stomach and gets its tail back and runs off thru the woods saying "I got my taily po back"
@WeGoNeBaLlHaRd2212 that's an interesting question to answer, as with any work of fiction it depends on who's telling the story. the version of Tailypo that I knew of originated as an old folk tale told around Southeastern United States, but there are different variations of the story, one titled Big Toe which you can find in the Scary Stories Treasury by Alvin Schwartz. There's an earlier version of the story called The Golden Arm. Mark Twain used to tell this story in his public readings.
@WeGoNeBaLlHaRd2212 My granny always told me this story before I went to bed. I live in a small town in the uppercumberland of tennessee. My granny told me you can still see the old mans cabin in the woods. My dad took me once. All thats left is the crumbling chimney and some of the foundation, that is if its the right cabin.
I remember being in Kindergarten and the teacher read this to us and it was the very first ghost/monster story i had ever heard. it gave me nightmares and i had trouble sleeping for days. I haven't heard of or read it since then. I'm now 21, and watching this story after all that time... man, that was an incredible experience.
Very well-done stop motion. Creepily stylized. Awesome video!
Thank you very much, this was my favorite story as a kid. When I found the book again in high-school I couldn't stop thinking about making a short film.
Definitely awesome, weak ending though......you should have at least shown the creature in full...some movies, etc., they don't have to be shown, but this one should show it....
Aww man, I was hoping to do something like this if I got accepted into film school or if I was able to become a director (I'm hoping to transfer to one after I finish my regular college courses so I can focus more on it)! I was really freaked out by this story as a kid and wanted to recreate that for an animated or live action short myself. I was actually generally planning the same thing with that fear of the unseen style as a tribute to Val Lewton's movies, and wanted to Oh well, great job!
Stunning work! I absolutely love stop motion and respect anyone who can do it. It's something I've always wanted to try. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. You did such a great job with this.
I had never heard of the Tailypo before but I shall look it up now. Wow! Beautiful animation and very atmospheric storytelling. Sent a chill through me, anyway!
Oh excuse me! They are African American folktales from my "The People Could Fly" book. the name of the story is "The Peculiar Such Thing". Again, excellent job! brought back memories, both good & not so good! hahaha ; )
My brother and I were just talking the about "The People Could Fly"! Our mom had all those kinds of books for us...Abiyoyo, Miranda and Brother Wind, Anansi haha.
@amberly357 Oh that's awesome! I have Miranda and Brother wind too, Hehe! Her Stories, The Fortune Teller, To Hell With Dying, May'naise Sandwiches & Sunshine Tea, Maebelle's Suitcase, & Sam and the Tigers: A Retelling of 'Little Black Sambo' are some that I grew up with. I'll definitely check those other two you wrote out!
Wow! Its so intersting seeing this story come to life. I have a book full of African folktales called Her Stories, this being one of them, & when I was little my sister would read them to me. Being older she loved to scare me & did so with this story sometimes, though it was a little different from your telling of it. I got her nickname for me from it -my name is Taylour + it calls out tailypo = Tayliepoe! haha! Very nice job! :)
I have to give major props to you for this, you were able to evoke emotions that have been with me since I first heard this story in my childhood. Keep it up

Oh thank god... It wasn't as scary as I thought It would be. I was expecting him to wake up with the creature like right in front of his face...

@konnii1 A somewhat demonic black Creature with the body of a dog and the head of a rabbit

@XTWIntensity That's just one variation of the tale. Depending on the storyteller, it always changes.
