Eating meat isn't speciesism, is survival as long is done humanely.
I eat meat because is survival but I eat stuff that are abundant.
Not all human are homocentricity or speciesm, some are biocentric even ecocentric.
I'm biocentric I care for all life.
Value of a human it depend on the person.
If is let say my dog's life VS people with negative values like murderers and rapists such as Shoko Asahara, David Koresh, Charles Manson and Saddam Hussein I'd value my dog over that human life.
I must say that I disagree with the appeal to human nature. This same argument can be used to defend almost any human action. If it's in our nature to be immoral, does this justify being immoral? Maybe...but if I made this argument to defend other things which you perceive as being immoral you might not take it seriously. I also think it's possible to say humans are capable of a certain level of morality that animals are not without viewing animals as inferior because of this difference.
@thedefendingchamp For example, If I say black people can usually jump higher than white people...This would not mean that I think overall black people are superior. It would just mean that I think they usually are capable of jumping higher. Maybe I could even prove this in some way which would make it more of an objective observation...whereas if I was to say black people were superior overall that would be a value judgment.
@thedefendingchamp In conclusion, I don't think it is to assume I am better than other species. Do I think I am above my natural instincts? I am not even sure if that's the case either. What is a natural instinct? Maybe it's my natural instinct to care about the suffering of animals...and choose not to eat them based on this instinct. So, I don't think not eating animals automatically comes with some assumption that you are superior to them.
I completely agree with the ideas you present here, I don't love all animals either. I'm also a Dog person. but Cats love me, I have never met a cat that didn't want me to be its best friend ever of all time. but to use your subway scenario if I saw a dog and a cat on the subway line. I'd save the dog and expect the cat to successfully fend for itself . As you say, the fish can keep the water, I don't bug them, they don't bug me.
Most people don't know, but cats have almost the opposite way of showing affection than humans do, cats show affection through being relaxed around each other, typically people who like cats give the cat the wrong impression, they run up grinning (baring their teeth, is what the cat sees), approach the cat (high energy, invasion of privacy, a sign of intimidation to the cat), and generally give lots of attention to the cat, which cats hate.
Cats like you cause you don't do any of the above
@Soundfrequency My mother is terribly allergic to cats and tries to avoid them at all time. Ignores them completely... but my aunt's cat (a persian) LOVES her. He will jump up on her lap and purr and purr. She doesn't want to be mean and push it away, because he really is a sweet guy, he just doesn't know that my mom hates him deep down.... or maybe he does know >:)
What's the force of the claim that speciesism is ok because it's human instinct when there are humans who actually choose not to be speciesist?
