IMO, neither side wants a war, but it would be foolhardy to think that Russia will always stand by and watch the NATO alliance march into its oil rich trading partners in the ME, and never react. People in Europe have seen Russia take control of the oil and gas supplies to neighbouring former Soviet states, turning off the taps whenever there is a dispute over paying them for the oil and gas. Who owns the natural resources of the planet, controls the planet. Mankind has never liked to share.

Russia counts on nukes because it has always been it's doctrine. The warsaw pact against the NATO initially was less strong, so they had medium range missiles, so they started threatning europe to make americans don't plan invasion against USSR. Now Russia is half strong of what the USSR was, but still a great power and the US still is second about ground forces.

China vs. Japan? Well, they both have excellent main battle tanks, with slight edge to Japanese. The Japanese have Aegis-class anti-aircraft missile cruisers, which the Chinese don't yet have, as far as i know. Of course the Chinese have the Dong Feng & other ICBMs that Nippon does not have, though the Japanese could build anything, quickly. China has a much larger military, but then it has long borders to defend & a huge underclass---Japan does not have those problems.

It took more than 4 months to mobilize the US force deployed for Desert Shield to Desert Storm. The USMC can deploy anywhere their ships can take them...more than 200 miles inland and it will take them several weeks.
The VDV paratroopers can be deployed and sustained against a third rate power by Russia as is today, there is just no political need
Its not WW2 anymore...a couple of salvoes of rockets with HE submunitions on semi-open terrain will chew up any infantry force.

The strategic weapons of both sides have not been stood down since the USSR collapsed. Although there is no obvious animosity towards Russia by the people of the west, the bigger picture is more complex than our leaders let on through the mainstream media. The Islamic threat is overstated, and possibly a complete red herring. Moscow is not happy about NATO expansion, and as natural resources deplete, there is still the very real possibility of conflict between the two sides.

The warsaw pact against the NATO initially was less strong, so they had medium range missiles, so they started threatning europe to make americans don't plan invasion against USSR. Now Russia is half strong of what the USSR was, but still a great power and the US still is second about ground forces.

China vs. Japan? Well, they both have excellent main battle tanks, with slight edge to Japanese. The Japanese have Aegis-class anti-aircraft missile cruisers, which the Chinese don't yet have, as far as i know. Of course the Chinese have the Dong Feng & other ICBMs that Nippon does not have, though the Japanese could build anything, quickly. China has a much larger military, but then it has long borders to defend & a huge underclass---Japan does not have those problems.

I know a writer who went into Georgia with the Russian Army.
They were highly proffessional, but were still using 40 year old equipment. T-64's and T-72's were the most common tanks, 2S3 SPH's, and a mish-mash of personal weapons and uniforms were common throughout the Russian formations. The Russian airforce was almost non-existant.
These were the best forces Russia could deploy into the area.
The perception of Russia as a military power is still just propaganda.

I spoke with many NCO's & officers who served in the Strategic Air Command (as it was known then), and they HATED the idea of a nuclear war.....Their entire job & outlook was deterrence. Of course I agree that a nuclear exchange would be horrible, and that is why the US armed forces have massive, redundant deterrence---To make any nuke attack on the USA a national suicide act.
