The diamond was given as a gift to Maharajah Ranjit Singh by a wealthy muslim lady for defending her land against the british. The Diamond was then handed to Maharajah Ranjit's son Duleep Singh. The East India company manipulated Duleep Singh and bought him to England as a child and they took hold of the Diamond. Queen Victoria was very fond of Duleep Singh, this was all an act so the diamond would stay on British soil. Duleep Singh wanted to return to india but was caught & died a poor man
