  • Great song, but really this video was just WAY to literal for me! Don't be afraid to take liberties with a video!!

  • This song is amazing. most people hate it but I don't know how. Im a bid fan of this band so I might be biast but I think they are one of the most underrated bands ever

  • Poor Anne.

  • lyrical genius

  • @77FallenAngels shock jock troll

  • Jesus Christ was a hipster......and a Jew

  • This is a very sad song and harps on unthinkable horrors. I hope people understand or attempt to understand what NMH are singing about.

  • pianos filled with flames

  • Thank God Ashland Avenue isn't real.

  • @lalilul3lo LOL! Agreed!

  • @lalilul3lo thank god somebody else found them from Will Grayson Will Grayson

  • Another song which makes a Holy Cow out of the Jews.

  • @robinxyz101 your right those sissy jews getting slaughtered by the nazis quit ur making people feel sympathetic towards you and then write amazing songs about a girl who was slaughtered for no reason

    ...your a fucking loser

  • @SmurphLand wow congratulations you are a dick

  • @ZomfGJohn lets yell about it -_-

  • alright sorry. heres an idea! dont be tampons, and SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTHS?

  • ah WWII...what would the world be right now without you?

  • Damn Will Grayson has excellent taste.

  • <3 First off, let me say that ITAOTS is, without a doubt, my favorite album of all time (and, incidentally, The Diary of Anne Frank was my favorite book as a young teen). Secondly, though, I wonder if Jeff had ever heard of Sophie Scholl. If you want to read something really poignant, look up the webcomic Subnormality, post 474, "The Line." Probably one of the most inspiring things I've ever read.

  • @Serileigh its number 107

  • @HKUARCHANGEL XD Sorry, I was going by the url, which says page 474. You're most definitely correct, though. Everyone should read that!

  • I just finished Flyboys by James Bradley, and while I'd love to say that all of the horrible and graphic things described in that book shocked and appalled me, they didn't. Man is a naturally cruel beast, and war is the physical manifestation of that cruelty. I cannot pity the young soldier who suffers an early death after taking the lives of others. I can only pity those thrust into the chaotic heart of the storm against their will by world leaders who prefer destruction to negotiation.

    RIP

  • @blithium and while I realize that the above comment really had very little to do with the song's content, I still had to listen to it as soon as I finished the book. All I can do is quote the musical Chess, and then give two final words to sum up my thoughts.

The quote: Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart.

    The words: Fuck war.

  • Did anyone else find this through John Greens book "Will Grayson Will Grayson" ?

  • @sporksftw42 guilty :)

  • @sporksftw42 ahahah, yeah:) thought they were made up...Love that book:)))

  • "2,1,1 2 3 4."

  • @ManGoesGood dumbass its 2, 1, 2, 3, 4 fucking retard

  • @SmurphLand Whoops?

  • @SmurphLand shut up. I hate flamers that attack people for no reason.

  • @Oozingzombie57 He had a good reason who the fuck thinks there's a second 1 in there

  • @Trogdorwillrise true, true... but you don't have to be a jerk to get your point across.

  • @SmurphLand haha Yeah TOTALLY uncalled for

  • The final verse just brought a tear to my eye.

  • this song kills me evertime I hear it....

  • such an amazing song!!

  • trumpet notes???

  • this is sad :( to sad :(

  • I like that they played this song when i went to a taping of The Colbert Report. :)

I also like that Stephen apparently knows all the words.

  • @2tools1car

OH I NEW HE WAS A BRO.

  • *knew

  • been listening to Miles Kurosky and Neutral Milk lately.

  • if anne frank was alive, i would be so gay for her.

yup. i is a horrible person

  • some idiots who didnt see the video couldnt figure out it was about ww2

  • THE song of the 90s.

  • greAT SONG

  • Why did people rate tomizokun's comment thumbs down? He/she said "I like this a lot!!!"

  • Amazing!

    :O

  • Comment removed

  • 2:04 makes the song IMO. it's... amazing.

And here's where your mother sleeps, and here is the room where your your brothers were born...

  • 大好き!!!

  • this, in no way, could be call THE song of the 90s. It's great song, but decade-defining

  • Now we must pack every last piece

of the life we used to love

    just to keep ourselves

at least enough to carry on

this song should be called PALESTINE 1948

  • heart heart heart!

    :D

  • Comment removed

  • probably THE song of the 90s in my opinion.

  • agreed. Also the most underrated and overlooked.

  • @ARMYFUCKER

    >Neutral Milk Hotel

    >overlooked

    Seriously?

  • @ARMYFUCKER *looks at the viewcount and likes* ahahha yeah totally bro

  • @lgc27 It's probably the best song, but not decade defining. It was from 1998. Still no one knows it. xD

  • such an amazing song

Favorite song from in the aeroplane over the sea

  • wow great song lovely mixtures of instruments(:

  • never forget

  • the lyrics aren't about semen... he says that once. "semen stains the mountain tops" and that's to show the mindset of youth and growing up. Because as teenagers anything can be turned into sex... and he sings this way because it adds to the music. Different types of singing voices add different elements to music... for example, you don't have any light rock bands having screamo singers do you? because it just doesn't work. and you don't hear Jeff's type of singing in a metal band... doesn't fit

  • what the fuck? ALKQN NIKKVZ

  • This song is soo awesome!!!

    and Great video : D

    5 stars and fav!

  • wow, this is such an wasome song. It's so sad :'(

  • God I love this song, as well as Anne Frank

  • the drums and subtle use of the trumpet make the song

  • I agree that this song wouldn't be the same without them. yet that is to say the entire album would not be the same with out one of any of the artist on this album. it is a master piece compose of several parts brought together by jeff's vision and drive.

  • @gutterscab

well said. I've seen the live versions with just Jeff, and although the passion is there it just isn't the same without the rest of the ensemble.

  • Thank you very much, I've wondered about the piano flame thing for quite a while.

  • the boy playing the piano is a reference to Pepito Arriola who is one of the biggest examples for people to cite about reincarnation. He was able to play the piano remarkable well, before he could read music or even written words, at the age of 3, much like another well know composer who had died about 100 years earlier.

  • thank you i too was confused about that line, now i am enlightened

  • @Danlow258 That's really interesting. Sometimes I'd rather not know what certain obscure or cryptic lyrics refer to (preferring instead to just enjoy the imagery), but in this case knowing definitely enhances my appreciation of the song)...

  • i like how ridiculously obvious the photos are...when he says little boy in spain he has a pic of a little boy on a piano then a picture flames....very direct.

  • like in the song what does the little boy in spain playing pianos full of flames mean i get everything else except that part

  • i see it as reincarnation kind of thing, that she has been reborn into someone fantastic, but who knows what it really means.

  • I think it's like reincarnation. . .not sure, though.

  • for some reason i always associate the boy-spain-piano-flames line with Salvador Dali

  • Best...song....ever.

    XD

  • I think he sounds goofy during the beginning

  • That's part of what makes it good. Indie bands are supposed to sound kind of goofy.

  • Pretty much my favorite song.

  • One of the best albums EVER.

    Purely magic.

  • It's like the best song about world war 2 ever.

  • i can't help but love the beginning when he counts in...

  • y is this such a good song

  • bc its catchy ? lol

  • i absolutely am in love with this song

  • MASTERPIECE!

  • This album has such a brilliant concept! I mean... yes it's about Anne Frank.. but not really at the same time! Ahhh it's so difficult to describe the human implications of this album! It's really something else... fantastic.

  • jesus christ, ily

  • One of the best songs ever written, but this video is terrible.

  • Kevin Devine is a little twat. I listen to his cover and he sounded like a freaking porn star, which is just not right. He should make his own material.

  • Any person named Kevin is bound to be a douche.

  • The exception being Kevin Barnes

  • And me.

  • My name's Kevin, I like to think I'm not a douche.

  • Heh whatever you sa, douche.

  • haha ur hilarious :D

  • yeah didn't realise it was specifically about the holocaust. makes me doubly pissed off at the possible rise in support for the BNP in Britain

  • i finally know what this song means from the video and i'm so ashamed of existing as a ? peace in the middle east! calvin...

  • all she need was the miracle worker to slap some sense into her.

  • What are you talking about?..

Maybe your confusing Anne Frank with Hellen Keller?

  • Haha WTF?

  • are you dumb?

  • i REALLY hope youre kidding

  • I'm pretty certain that's a Clerks reference :p

  • yea it's a quote guys.

  • ...how did u guys not catch that?

  • i understand the meaning behind the song but i dont understand what "rose in her eyes" means. please explain.

  • Anyone here talking about Israel/Palestine is an idiot. It has NO RELATION to this video.

  • youre fuckin right man, that was the point i was tryin to make man

  • im from holland and this band is great. Ive been to the anna frank house, it is pretty impressive man. You realy understand that it took the germans 5 fucking years to find the 'achterhuis' where they lived and spent their time playing stupid good old dutch games ;), they never left, only their dad and some others, but very ocassionaly. It is still not obvious how they got caught. It is a fucking shame. Fuck nazism and anti-semitism. The dream lives on.

  • I like this song and i love this band. And this comment is related to the video XD

  • Come on, guys. It's about Anne Frank, not the state of Israel.

  • All Hail Xenu!!!

  • yo triplehelix we're on the same side pertaining to israel and whatnot but please stfu before you do more damage to the cause tia

  • the only reason the west still supports Israel, in waging genocide, is myths from ww2. The Gazans will be burned alive and starved, until the USA can forget the ww2 anti-German propaganda. Until then all Palestinians will be terrorists, and Israel will be the victim.

  • triplehelix2000 - the way you talk shows that you are ignorant. the holocaust is nothing like gaza. israel is not burning the gazans alive. in fact, israel risks its soldiers lives to send in ground troops in operations so as to reduce civilian casualties. the gazans are not being starved. occasionally, the checkpoints are closed because hamas decides to send a suicide bomber into them.

    please educate yourself

  • Nafiz Abu Shahbah, a doctor who trained in Britain and America, said he was sure white phosphorus was responsible. Their wounds at first appeared superficial but it eats at the flesh, it digs deeper and gets to the bone...The whole body becomes toxic,

In the Jabaliya refugee camp, the Associated Press found a crater that was still producing acrid smoke days after the war ended, and a lump of white phosphorus burst into flames after some boys dug it up from beneath some sand.

  • that seems to remind me of the 10,468 rockets and mortars that gazans have launched into israel.

israel did not launch the white phosphorus to kill children and other civilians. they used it as an artillery spotter. while this does not excuse the casualties, it shows that their motivation is different from that of hamas, who tries to kill israeli civilians and then hides behind their own.

  • only 15 Israelis have been killed by these "rockets". They are really less dangerous than fireworks. Israel has forced all Palestinians into a tiny area. I'm sure if hamas wanted to leave civilian areas they would be shot for violating the Israeli apartheid. Zionism = racism

  • Our world is REALLY messed up... and something like this could easily happen again today.. under different terms.

However, I thought the music to this video was maybe too upbeat for the content.

    just my opinion

  • I know, it makes me so sad to know that this is happening again, the poor Gazans. The Israelis have forced them to live in conditions like the Auschwitz. I think sometimes about the white phosphorous burning the poor Palestinian children alive, and after they have been starved for so long.

  • The pictures are related to the lyrics.

  • God, triplehelix2000, you just can't give it a rest.

For those of you who don't know, we've been having an interesting conversation about the Holocaust on the discussion board for the "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" video posted by CJWang (I think) Come on over!

  • I love Neutral Milk Hotel, some extremely beautiful and bittersweet songs. Espiecaly Two headed boy, parts 1 and 2. The album ends with my favorite lyrics of all time.

"Two headed boy, don't you grieve, when she's gets up, tooo leave."

    Makes me cry every time.

  • this made me cry for how effed up our world is. time for change, count on me to do my share.

  • triplehelix2000

it seems after reading a few neutral milk hotel comment boxes that you are trying to say the holocaust didnt happen?

feel free to tell me otherwise, but if that is the case its insanely ignorant

  • wikipedia = not a reliable sorce..... dumbass

  • the beginning and ending font/video stuff is way cool... (so is all that middle jazz)
