@bitchazzmothafuckaz I agree! That no-talent piece of crap has no right being mentioned in anything to do with Mellotrons/Chamberlins. What the bloody hell?!
If you want to hear the best use of M strings, hear King Crimson song: "In The Wake Of Poseidon" 1970 E.G. Music.
The way a Mellotron is produced or recorded was as important as it's stand alone sound. The Moody Blues, King Crimson, and Genesis would bring up the reverb just over the long notes, also consequently raising the volume to a crescendo. Blending two or more tracks was also done for a stereo and fuller sound. Best program sample: Reason.
I saw a festival screening of this movie. It's great, a nice coverage of the Chamberlin - into - Mellotron story. Of course, you cannot cover what everyone wants to see (costs, people refusing to be in it, relevance) but they told the historical story completely and well.
dont forget to interview david sancious. he rolled out a haunting classic mellotron sound on bruce springsteen's 'nyc serenade.' easily the bosses most creative era.
Q: Does anyone know who was the FIRST to develop digital sampling?
A: It was ALLEN organs(in collaboration with North American Rockwell in the 1960's". So, we can thank an organ manufacturer for today's digital keyboards!
Note however that the first commercial sampler (i.e. a product musicians could buy) was Australian: the Fairlight CMI. It cost as much as a small house.
This is GOLD! But don't forget the master of progressive rock Mellotron player... TONY BANKS!! Just listen ENTANGLED or the intro from WATCHER OF THE SKIES...
Could the uploader please add details in the video description about the release date and any other news about when and where this film will show (and when the DVD will be available)?
It was a blast! :) Imagine having a board full of 1K EPROMs that cost close to $3000 and held about 200KB of data (o.o) The KB itself was from an electronic organ. That ran to a muxer that scanned it and output the keypress data to the microprocessor. That in turn buffered the data from the EPROMs into playback RAM and off it went. The D/As were handmade. First sound that came out of it was a sampled fart so realistic people nearby were wrinkling their noses in dusgust :D
In the 70's I made one of the first digital versions of the Mellotron. It used RAM and ROM and was not as easy to load music into it. But, oh, man! Then we got a floppy to load the music samples into RAM and the 8080 processor to make it work.. and wound up with a nice reliable, but 10 times the cost version. :P
Man, my heart bleeds for you! I didn't try computer music until the mid-80s when CPUs (or at least the ones I was using!) were much quicker. Amazing that we can now fit the same functionality plus cool 3D user interface into a phone!
Looks great...writing as a Beach Boys nut though I can't think of a time they ever used one?- which would make Brian Wilson's appearing a bit pointless- can anyone jog my memory?
Yeah, the Beach Boys aren't the most associated with the Mellotron, like say King Crimson or the Moody Blues, but Brian Wilson did own a Chamberlin back in the day. They used it on Wild Honey and Sunflower.
Great, can't wait to see it. Awesome that you pulled it off. And looking forward to see Markus' insightfull comments, he did a great job restoring my m400.
Two great bands to listen to that made great use of the Mellotron are Pavlovs Dog and a brilliant Kiwi band from the 70's called Ragnarok.
