While I'm totally glad you've wanted to get into making chiptunes, this is an abortion. Here's a few things I'd like to mention:

1) Not EVERYTHING has to be in arpeggios. Especially the melody. Arpeggios ("arps") are great for chords and SPARINGLY in the right kind of melodies.

2) Get familiar with the following programs: Famitracker (NES tracker, free.) LSDJ (Game Boy Tracker, hardware isn't free.) Nanoloop (Ditto.)
