I wonder how much of Stipe's "dream" about his submarine that rises with the singing of a melody is unconsciously based on the Beatles' Yellow Submarine. Both have this fantastic, child-like source of inspiration. Someone should ask him about it. It's not everyday that songwriters write songs about submarines. Oh, there is Thomas Dolby too (One of Our Submarines). That was a great song.
lol, I ramble too Michael and I know your gay but I'd still go for you, he's so sexy, better than when his songs came out in the early 90's, he looks good still, love ya still.
I don't know what place REM was in when they made Around the Sun, but I've always honestly felt that it was a solid record.
I don't hear it much, but I get the feeling that there are two camps re REM. American fans that love the 80's stuff, and then this huge international audience that they have found... It's very impressive the success they have gotten... but as an old IRS years guy, I don't always get it and feel a little intimidated.
I completely agree. I couldn't take Around The Sun out of my CD player once I rediscovered it about a year ago. I don't understand the beating it gets from so many fans...it's a beautiful record.
Sure, it doesn't have that typical "R.E.M. sound" that we all love. But it's nice to see the boys try to alter from their past and experiment every once in a while. Around The Sun works much better as an album than as individual songs. Listen to the whole thing from start to finish.
Well said! By the way...I was wondering if there's any website where R.E.M. songs are "explained" like this, I would love to know what's really behind such well matched beautiful words.
I loved that song from the moment I heard it, I love it even more now. He might have just blown his last chance to appear sane but dammit I love him for it . Michael you are one crazy alien genius!

Kind of a strange subject matter, but way better than the dry, overused love song so many bands seem to embrace.
