hi Huskermania - i did everything on this video (to install my OS 10.6) but when it comes to mounting the Disk Image to teh external the following comes up . "Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored." any ideas why.... appreciate the help if you can. thanks.
@Scootfast Yes, after you have the "Mac OS X Install DVD.cdr" showing on the left. Go to file, open disk image" and select "Mac OS X Install DVD cdr" This will actually mount it and you are good to go from there. Just simply clicking the sub source "Mac OS X Install DVD" (with no .cdr) should fill in the source field for you. Hope this helps!
I have followed the steps many times and everything seems to be exactly as specified in the video. But, I always get the same result: a response that says "Restore Failure "could not find any scan information. The source needs to be image scanned before it can be restored". Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Hi, i have the same hard drive as you by the looks of it but when i try to boot from it it crashes my splash screen before even getting to the "Press any key to boot from external device" prompt? any fix?
My known specs---
1. Windows 8 build 8102 [downloaded free from windows site]
2. Intel i3 processor
3. HP G62x Laptop
External Hard Drive im using---
1. Western Digital 1.5 TB My Book External HDD
2. installed on the drive is a completed bootable copy of Mac OS 10 6 2 from Hazard
Unfortunately this doesn't work. .cdr images can't be "imagescanned" and Disk Utility won't let you restore from an unscanned image. This is on a Mac Mini running Show Leopard. I had to use asr and bless from the command line. Search the web for imagescan and asr.
If I make a copy of the Disk image on my firend's mac and copy it over to my computer(Linux PC), can I change it to an ISO File and boot up Snow leopard on my PC?
how would i do this if i want to do it with window 7 so i could hold down the option key when i start my mac and i pit my external hdd and it boots up windows
nah I haven't cj lol I am giving up and going to an apple store let them deal with it for me :/ it's just to hard the hard drive way especially when I'm not computer literate either, I also bought snow leopard off apple website coz of it but that don't work either just keeps ejecting itself waste of my money lol
when i try to partition my hard drive, it seem's that my disk utility's just freezes and don't respond? after a while i have to force quit and now when i plug my hard drive in isn't even recognized on any pc or mac ? anybody have an idea how to fix this? :/ thanks :)
@cjburke95 when you go into disk utility, does the harddrive appear at all? just like the model name, like WESTERN DIGITAL BLAH BLAH (an example) or anything?
When I drag the install to the destination. I don't get the option to uncheck "erase destination." It automatically says it's going to erase "Install" and copy the contents of "Mac OS X Install DVD.cdr" to it. Will it still work. I'm using Lion.
also the torrent files i got are .exe how do i convert to mac software that i dont even know what it is because this is my first time owning a macbook
this is a good video i have done everything but when i press restore and put my password in it comes up with: An error (2) occurred while copying. (No such file or directory)
please help me i just want itunes and stuff on my mac, i have tried everything and looked everywhere on google, its on a normal CD not a dvd/r and a torrent file
@ghartsho He used a MacBook Pro for the whole thing. It was just a screen shot until he had to turn the computer off and reboot. Since he obviously can't use a screen shot to show you what to do while the computer is off he switched to a camera and filmed that part.
Is there a way to make the one on the external hard drive your old mac, and restore the internal one. i want to restart from scratch but i want the my current one to be accessible through the external hard drive. PLEASE HELP ME, i've been trying for quite a while already but i still haven't found anything yet
@joshuacohenjc Yes. Mac (and windows) systems will look for a boot sector on any attached storage device. Just mount the HD with OS X installed into an external enclosure and connect it to the Mac before you start it up.
I was hoping that I could boot Mac OS X from Mac AND PC, but it seems GUID Partition Table is for Intel Macs only. Master Boot Record is Windows and DOS. Is there a way to use the partitions at boot-up on Windows and Mac?
Unfortunately my preferred photo program, ACDSee Pro Mac does not work with Lion. When attempting to follow the video to install OS 5 to an external drive, I do not have the option of "Not Erasing" the install drive when attempting to install. Seems Apple is cloning MS, releasing updates which screw up some programs with only a few enhancements.
pressing the option key on startup doesn't seem to work, im running snow leopard with a wireless keyboard, is this something to do with the fact that the bluetooth keyboard doesnt kick in until its started up maybe?

I'm doing this so i can use disk utility on my external hd to i can repair my internal hd...... Can you use utilities without installing and just running "install" off the externa?
thankyou to anyone that replys any help would be very much appreciated x
my questions is can i completely remove the OSX from my internel harddrive and use the osx on my externel and just use the internel for storing data like games, files,...etc? pls reply as soon as possible
@multicyberworld freakin buy a snow leo disk and use that! its only 30 bucks! dont pirate. people work really hard on these products and deserve some money
This is great! Just one question, I'm using a 16gb thumb drive, how big do I need each partition to be? ( namely: install & leopard 2) that if it is ok with such space, I mean.
is there any way to do this with out an external hard drive? does the external hard drive have to stay plugged in for use of the operating system after installation?
@Hellhelium11231995 i dont want to run osx on my laptop.. i wish to be able to boot from the external hdd and use the osx operating system i have successfully installed, how can i get pass this problem?
@UTMST because Apple uses EFI to boot up while Windows uses something else. If you want OSX on a pc, search osx 86 wiki on google and click on the first one
I got as far as installing disc 1 when it asks for disc 2 to finish the installation. I restored both discs to the external hard drive as my disc drive does not work. How do I get past this point?

Great Video !!! Can I do the same with my just downloaded copy of Mac OS X Lion? it downloaded as a DMG, If I already have some partitions on the external drive, can I add the other 2 we need to make this work? thanx dude !!
Thanks for the video, but I'm wondering if it is possible to use bootcamp on the external drive that was just formatted. I've gotten various messages saying that it couldn't be done for external drives, so I made it my internal one. Then it said "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows." Is it safe to delete the "install" partition after this?
After the password prompt, I am given the following message 'Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored.' What step did I miss?
@lockpick123456789 In theory you can, but as of now it's complicated. Wait for more software to come out, then look up some tutorials on YouTube or Google.
Is it possible to run system updates, and successfully updating everything? And if I get the new OS X Lion when it comes out can i copy the iso image into the hard-drive and open it up while in the hard drive and update it? Is it also possible for me to recognize other USB removable disks while I'm running OS X from the external hard drive? Ex. can i view contents of a folder from my thumb drive while I'm in the boot from the external hard drive containing the Mac OS X?
@sushiman1997 1. System updates should be fine. 2. When Lion comes out, you can update your hard drive pretty easily. When the installer asks you where you would like to install the OS, just select the drive. 3. Yes. Your HDD will be placed as an icon on your desktop. You can open this up and copy/delete/edit files etc. Hope this helped.
Is it necessary to create two partitions? I only want to have one partition on my drive. Would it be fine if I had the disk image (of the install DVD) on the same partition that it's installing on?
RE "Restore Failure- Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored." so I did a google search and found:
@Ipodtouchmaniac100 The state of the machine would stay the same, but trying to run any applications or commands would either shut the system down or give you an internal error.
for any one asking . this is for installing mac OSX on what ever not another OS like Linux , Windows 7 and others . why may you ask ?? the mother fucking firmware on your mac won´t let you .
A friend of mine sent me his own ISO of OS X but I'm on Ubuntu, I have VirtualBox installed so could I run a virtual computer and do this process so I can install OS X on my netbook?
Hey, great video, thanks for sharing. I want to ask you (I'm not an English speaker so, some things I couldn't understand), with this method I can maintain my actual 10.4.11 tiger and my data and applications, but running trough leopard? I mean, I don't need to reinstall all my applications? thanks for any answers.
worked beautifully!! I was having a problem with my drive so i loaded the disc on my brothers mac, then installed the dvd onto the external hard drive then booted my mac up from the external hard drive! Thank you sooo much
This is helpful but what I'm trying to do is upgrade my friend's machine from 10.4.11 to 10.5 Leopard. I have the disk image all set and my external HD ready. Just confused as to what I'm booting into after the install.. Can we boot from the internal HD and still have the new OS on it? Thanks!
GREAT video but after this proces my mac will be have 2 operative systems and my cuestion is... if from the mac usb drive i can see, open , copy , move and dele files or folders located on the internal hard drive ??
this was soooo helpful, i use my old 2g ipod classic as a repair disk incase anything goes wrong with my macbook, the install disk is no where near as helpful as another full leopard disc
everything goes well until booting up from USB :/ I press ALT at bootup, I see my BOOTCAMP, DVD, HD Machintosh but i cant see the USB External HDD :( i googled and tried so many things, but no success. any idea about the problem?

This does not work in OS 10.7.2
- There is no erase destination check box in disk utility.
When you click "Restore" the following appears:
"To restore the disk image, Disk Utility must scan it first. To cancel the scan and stop restoring the disk image, click Cancel."
Then:
Unable to scan "INSTALL." (Resource busy)
Any clues anyone?

And if I get the new OS X Lion when it comes out can i copy the iso image into the hard-drive and open it up while in the hard drive and update it? Is it also possible for me to recognize other USB removable disks while I'm running OS X from the external hard drive? Ex. can i view contents of a folder from my thumb drive while I'm in the boot from the external hard drive containing the Mac OS X?
sushiman1997 1 year ago
@sushiman1997 1. System updates should be fine. 2. When Lion comes out, you can update your hard drive pretty easily. When the installer asks you where you would like to install the OS, just select the drive. 3. Yes. Your HDD will be placed as an icon on your desktop. You can open this up and copy/delete/edit files etc. Hope this helped.

Can i install Windows to an external hard?.....Actually i've got an internal connected with a SATA to USB cable. So i that possible?

Was this actually tested on 10.6.x installer DVDs? Or are we assuming what will work for 10.5.x should theoretically work for a 10.6.x DVD?

Is it necessary to create two partitions? I only want to have one partition on my drive. Would it be fine if I had the disk image (of the install DVD) on the same partition that it's installing on?

"Open "Disk Utility" File-›Open Disk Image...
Select your dmg, and click open
After it, your dmg file will appear on the left side of the Disk Utility's main window.
Double click to it (it will mount it)
Select the mounted volume (below your dmg file)
Right click (Ctrl+Click)
Select "Set as source..." !!! Important: Select the mounted drive as source, and NOT the dmg image!!!
After it, select the destination image.
And click restore."

@cassiescritters It might be simpler just to rename it to a .cdr image? Would that work?

when i try this method except i use mac osx tiger and i use a ppc the disk utility in the installer cant detect my hard drive
jacetheace97 1 year ago
What would happen if the hard drive unplugged while your booted on Mac?
Ipodtouchmaniac100 1 year ago
@Ipodtouchmaniac100 The state of the machine would stay the same, but trying to run any applications or commands would either shut the system down or give you an internal error.

Hey, great video, thanks for sharing. I want to ask you (I'm not an English speaker so, some things I couldn't understand), with this method I can maintain my actual 10.4.11 tiger and my data and applications, but running trough leopard? I mean, I don't need to reinstall all my applications? thanks for any answers.

hey, Im using an Imac G4 800mhz 768mb Ram and running 10.4.11 Tiger.
I have a Firewire 400 external drive
followed your instructions and on reboot *holding option*
i only have my Macintosh HD Available.
My question is how do i use Leopard Assist in conjunction with the install?
Leopard Assist being the program witch "tricks" the install into thinking Im running sufficient CPU speed of 933mhrz
thanks,
Frank

This is helpful but what I'm trying to do is upgrade my friend's machine from 10.4.11 to 10.5 Leopard. I have the disk image all set and my external HD ready. Just confused as to what I'm booting into after the install.. Can we boot from the internal HD and still have the new OS on it? Thanks!
