damn we need those gates up here in traverse city michingan! we dont get much rail action but when we do the stupid ass drivers who think trains never come thru here dont pay attention to the lights and cross right before the train passes
up here in northern illinois we got blasted in february, i had atleast 5 feet of snow in my neighborhood street afterwords, the night before i tried to get a train in the storm but the roads were just undriveble, these snow storms were awesome tho!!
BN SD40-2 twins in a blizzard with a perfectly tuned rs3k, running manifest?! Nostalgic!!! No doubt they are making good time, but if you want a master of the highball, ATSF. No wonder both found eachother. :D
You know, I think I've said this before, but I keep coming back to watch this again and again because I just love it. I don't know if it's the dark, windy, moody lighting or the fact that I love snowstorms almost as much as I love trains, but this is absolutely my favorite railfanning vid of all time.
@steve7112004 Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. As miserably cold as I was at the time, it was well worth it to get the footage. I just wish I had used the tripod in retrospect. This past January we had some really good snow here in Oklahoma for the first time in recent years, and my camera was unfortunately out of commission (and still is), so I wasn't able to capture the winter scene this year. Thanks for viewing and commenting.
LOL i bet you was freezing your ass off out there, but it was worth it, to catch a classic BN green cascade freight train :D 5*****'s & fav. I love the horn too :)
The crossing used to have a mechanical bell up until around the time this video was shot in November 2006, when it was replaced by the e-bell. Other than that, not really anything else has changed about this crossing. Some of my newer uploads of this crossing are from back when the mechanical bell was still there.
In 2004, the FRA enacted a new regulation placing a maximum decibel level on train horns. It had immediate effect on all new train horns and requires gradual phasing out or modification of older horns to meet the new standards within a certain timeframe.
@theup3985 That stinks doesnt it?!?! I miss the old RS3Ls and P5s I remember when I was little in the mid 90s. I was only a fewyears old but I do remember them. I lived right next to the Ex CR Lehigh Line and I do very much miss those days.
Thank you sir. Yes, that is definitely one of my favorite horns as well, it literally sent chills down my spine in addition to the chills from being out in the deep freeze. I with this horn were still in wide use today :o(
That goes way back to the era when BN absorbed Great Northern, Northern Pacific, CB&Q, Frisco.. I remember that so well when I lived next to the tracks which once was Northern Pacific.. That was the original horn back then, great to hear it once again! Thanks
Nice old school BNSF locos I love the old green and white ones. I grew up watching them pull massive coal trains through the local yard. Now everything around here is pulled by the DASH 9s still awesome sometimes there will be an old Santa Fe loco with the Red Santa Fe on the side
Me too! I always have since age 12 (I'm 28 now). BTW I dunno how anyone would possibly want to railfan in the middle of a blizzard, especially in the Great Plains. And many train videos out there begin with the train approaching you right away, which sort of takes the charm out if it, which is recording the horn in the distance. I know, that's a difficult job for me too.
I surprised "snow" is even in the dictionary down in Oklahoma.

Who knows why they don't have them anymore? These horns bring back memories of the mid '90s. Train horns aren't as loud as they used to be.
