  • I grew up in pawley's island sc, and I can say from experience that what is said on the video is all too true! I have watched my home town transformed and it no longer even feels like home to me. I'm just glad that I had the few years that I did there with the gullah people.

  • Only 5%? Oh this makes me mad!

  • When is this coming out?

  • Most of these comments are completely irrelevant. Now I actually live within spitting distance of St. Helena island and I am a history guide in Beaufort. I would love to see a real in-depth documentary on the Gullah because 100% of what they're saying in this clip is true. And it's sad because of the pressure coming from the the county to expand is driving the cost of living through the roof and what can they do? Awareness needs to be spread because without it, the culture is lost.

  • Ignore racist comments! This is an African/black conversation.

  • I'd like to see this whole film.

  • I Love THE SOUTH because I am a Southern. I took a stand to save our history. It is the love of money that destroys...Not The Love of your home. "Do unto others as you would have done unto you" " To sin by silence when we should protest makes cowards out of men". *Ella Wheeler Wilcox

  • IT WAS BLACK PROPERTY BECASUE THE WHITE YANKEES GAVE IT TO YOU FROM THE SOUTHERN PLANTATION OWNERS AFTER THE CIVIL WAR!

  • @RebelMusicify So...?

  • How interesting. Learning about family history is always beautiful.

  • Why does it have to be the "white people?" I am white, I didn't enslave anyone! No one reading this post has been enslaved. This should be about the culture. Who cares about the color of someones skin? Saying that the white people are trying to take something away from you is just plain ignorant. If anything is killing your culture, it is YOUR people disowning it, not someone taking it away from you! I was interested in watching a video about the culture but instead just heard a couple whiners.

  • @CR1071 i think that you are right that the black culture is being destroyed by our own people, but i think that it is just that people are still feeling the effects of those who enslaved others in tha past, and they are angry. as a black boy, i understand where you are coming from, but i think that you have to actually be black to understand why they are saying that.

  • @CR1071 Your ignorance is profound. Typical White persons response. Are you honestly telling me that the effects of slavery, and the hatred of white towards blacks magically have disappeared? Either you are dumb as hell or in serious denial.

  • @CR1071

So, white folks are not buying up the properties. I guess that's a lie, too. It's the Martians.

  • The word is "utmost"

    Not "up most"

    Just so you know, BiracialGirl1977.

  • St Helena belongs to the Native Americans and Indigenous people of Latin America . Black people you have Africa, white people you have Europe, You do not belong here.

  • @gfc56 Get over it.

Build a country and an economy on the blood, sweat, and tears of your ancestors and then you can talk.

And guess what? I'm Gullah and "Native American".

  • @GullahGritsGal This was a really ignorant comment, for reasons 500 characters won't let me go into.

  • @gfc56

Maybe you outta read the book, "The African Prescence in Early America"!

  • @gfc56 Part 1: I think that's really unfair to the people that were born here and whose ancestors had nothing to do with the Natives downfall , what whites did to the Native Americans is messed up beyond belief and what whites did to Blacks was fucked up beyond belief. Black people didn't asked to be kidnapped its not our fault we are here.

  • @gfc56 Part : 2 A lot of Blacks look at America as their home and having a right to be here because we paid our dues, we may not of originated here but we paid the dues to rightfully be here. We didn't take anything from the natives so dont be pissed off at us blame that on white people cause we as Black people never brought the natives any harm . SO WHATS YOUR DEAL ?

  • @gfc56 Part : 3 So I guess you think Whites should go back to Europe and Blacks should go back to Africa right ? Well... where the hell would you suggest people like me go ? what ? should I be cut in half ? half of my body sent to Europe and the other half to Africa ? That's really unfair; cause i didn't ask to be of 2 races anymore then the African's asked to be stole away from their homeland.

  • @gfc56 Part : 4 And technically speaking we all originated from Africa as in " Africa " is where life started, but in more recent terms Native Americans, Technically... AREN'T even from America either .

  • @gfc56 Part: 5 Native Americans are of Asian descent. The people that walked across the Baring straight into America before the ice bridge melted were of Asian descent that just so happened to settled in America, what we now call Native American's The only reason why Natives are called " The Natives of America " is because they were the first " KNOWN " people to settle on " The land of the Americas " so therefore the people ( you guys) are called the indigenous people.

  • @gfc56 Part : 6 Now dont get me wrong I have absolutely nothing against Native Americans I actually have a lot of respect for all Native American cultures I find it to be very beautiful and it deserves the up most respect. I just have never heard a Native American talk about " Black people dont belong here " as in we need to " Get the fuck out and go back to Africa "

  • @gfc56 Part : 7 I can understand your contempt for what the white man did to your people, I however, dont understand your disdain for Black people as we have done nothing to your people. We were treated like shit too. At least your people got to live with your families without the fear of being sold off to another owner.

  • @gfc56 Part : 8 At least your family wasn't bought and sold for hundreds of years ( though for a short time Natives where used for slavery until it was realized that Natives weren't built to be able to withstand the harsh conditions that's why they started using African's instead )

  • @gfc56 Part : 9 At least you had land to begin with ( even though it was stolen) you had it to begin with we had nothing when brought to this country not even the cloths on our backs. At least you were still able to maintain your many tribal languages, culture and traditions ( even though the whites made a great effort to destroy it, there are many Natives that were able to hold on to it anyway and pass it down,

  • @gfc56 Part: 10 Blacks were not so fortunate we were beat sometimes to death if we tried to hang onto any of our culture, language,or traditions. We were both treated less than human by White people so why are you against us ? We should band together because we were both oppressed by the white man not just the Natives.

  • @BiracialGirl1977 What do you mean "we"? Your username is self-explanatory,you're bi-racial or as i like to call your kind "mutty".Get in the corner with the other half breeds!

  • @IMFLORIDA305 whoa, why do you have to be so racist?

  • @gfc56 Part : 11 And I thought the Natives believed no man should take ownership possession, buy or sell any land that is not theirs to own since it was put here by God what right is it of any man to own what is not his but is and should be for all of God's children to live on.

  • @gfc56 Part :12 I still dont understand how a human being can own parts of the earth, the earth should not be for sell or owned. We are but mere guest here. Mother Earth can decide to kick us off the planet when ever she feel fit to do so.

  • @gfc56 Part : 13 Mother Earth can make the Human species go extinct just like that, then who owns what part of what wont matter anymore cause it wasn't really ours to begin with; we as humans are just under the grand delusion that it belongs to us when it in fact it really doesn't.

  • @gfc56

So, where do the Black Indians go or the mixed blood White/Native people go?

  • she could pass for someone from mali or cote d'iviore.

  • What's the name of this documentary?

  • blame YT for everything

  • as a white man from Charleston, i find this kinda racist.

  • How wonderful it was to view this. It's sad how so much of the land is now owned by whites and other groups. This is my home and my culture and it sadden me to no end how we are dying out. This Geechee girl is going to do everything she can to preserve this wonderful and important culture. Geechee now! Geechee forever!

  • I believe you love his accent because it is a sound you heard when you were young, I did. I also believe that your attraction to his voice is because it, the man and the voice, are carved from a lifetime of experience. He is a genuine man, and a genuine gullah, I know, I was raised on St. Helena Island, South Carolina.

  • l love that man's accent at the 1:00 or so mark..

  • St. Helena is a beautiful place.

  • One Love!!! I love these peole! The spirit of GOD flows through them and to them.....visit. I'm sure you'll be hooked!

  • When does this documentary come out?

  • I used to live there!!!

  • He's right," people have never survived without their culture, historically"

  • You're an idiot. They don't hate nobody, they just want to keep what's theirs.

  • My great grandmother is part Native and part Gullah. Can somebody tell me what tribe they mixed with? She's a very dark skinned Black Indian. She comes from Kingstree

  • Gullah people aren't Native Americans....Gullah and Geechee people are Black. They even said the population was 95% Black to 5% Black. sigh...

  • Did you read my comment? I didn't say they were. I said some of them mixed with Natives and I also stated that my family is Gullah and Native.

  • You are correct...so is my family....If you visit the plantations in South Carolina the history will reveal why so many of our families are mixed with African and Native American blood. We were sometimes placed on the SAME plantations and if you view "Daughters of the Dust" a hint of that is revealed in that movie as well.

  • No where in my comment did I say they were Native Americans. Damn read my simple comment

  • There is no Gullah tribe...Even if there was how would anybody know from a yt comment?

  • Where the hell did I say I was "YT"?

  • And I didn't even say Gullah was a tribe! Read the damn comment

  • don't sell it!!

  • yes, somethings should never be sold. but, the land is taken by force on many estates by rising taxes of the land. the city decides that the prop value has increased and raises land tax and if they can't pay then they will lose it. so, some sell then pay & move the tax instead of just losing it.

  • i am a krio-some of our ancestors were gullahs too, we should be proud as krios

  • I am interested in your history and what makes you krio- I myself speak what is called creole and want to compare cultures. pls email me

  • Krios are the descendants of slaves and freemen from various parts of the world. They built Freetown and it is where the majority of Krios live today. All these blacks formed a unique ethnic group called the Creole (now spelled Krio) who are similar to the descendants of African American slaves in Liberia (called Americo Liberians). I for instance am descended from slaves who were liberated off slave ships, American slaves from the South and Delaware, and Europeans who settled in Freetown.

  • Among the Krios are number of Gullah descendants-like the Harlestons, Hazeleys, Moores, and some others. A number of African American from Virginia also settled in Sierra Leone. The largest group of African Americans to immigrate to Sierra Leone were the Nova Scotians who founded Freetown. They were African American slaves mainly from the South who escaped (and some fought) for the British in the Revolutionary War. They were transported to Nova Scotia after the war. They founded Freetown in 1792

  • preserve traditional american cultures like the gullah, amish, and cajun!

  • right on

  • Me bex vex bout sumoch tings de buckruh chat bout. Me cyant wait til me see me culture mek a rize 4 we people. Memba Mus Tek Cyar De Root Fi heal Di Tree. Gullah Geechee's Don't forget our culture and Language. Stay Strong we almost dere.

  • The truth is, the human experience is a fluid one. Neither language nor culture is static. Were no, no one would have ever sold their property. Just as Egypt and Rome and Mexica gave way to the culture that succeeded them, so too shall Gullah culture. This is nothing to lament, this is how civilization and the human experience works.

  • it is not that he is being racist -- he just speaks the truth....and sometimes the truth hurts

  • being a white person from St. Helena Island, SC i must say that the gullah culture is as much of our history and culture as it is the black people..the black people there have a right to be mad -- they've owned their land since before the civil war..most people don't know that Penn Center (one of the first schools for African Americans) is on St. Helena Island as well..it is where MLK Jr. wrote "I have a dream"..their culture is slowly being taken away from them BY white people not from the area

  • if a white person had made the comment about selling land to black people, they would be castrated. I agree in preserving culture, but why stop at African American culture? Why not try to preserve AMERICAN culture and stop building houses on farm land, and out sourcing American jobs to china. My point is each person has issue's they're more passionate about, and murphycline obviously has a different passion than the rest of you, so what? Lay off and find something better to worry about...

  • where can i order this?

  • Can you imagine if a white person had complained in a film about selling property to black folks? People are offering to buy your property..boo fucking hoo.

  • I wasn't going to say anything but ignorance truly bothers me, Murphycline if you took the time watch and understand the trailer you wouldn't be looking like the stupid MF I think you are...LOL. That was the dumbest thing a person could have said after watching something educational like this.

  • it just goes to show that many americans put profit and materialism before history and culture. i think that it is the role of african americans and other people of color to truly preserve american cultural heritage

  • No one has a special role in the preservation of culture. If it works, you preserve it. If it doesn't (like Jim Crow Laws) then you discard it

  • Yes, because profit and materialism mean progress. Museums are nice, but if folks like you had their way then folks like the people who live in the Sea Islands would be forced in something akin to a national park

  • what he said wasn't all that ignorant. A little blunt, but not ignorant. if you're going to call his comment ignorant, then why don't you tell us WHY it's ignorant. It's not like white people are marching through down there and taking all the land in sight (we did that already in the 1700's). PEOPLE ARE SELLING THEIR LAND TO WHITE PEOPLE.

  • I agree with you beadleda. The Geechee's focus should be on retaining the values of their culture and not on "selling land to WHITE people". Just because something is educational doesn't mean that it is gospel.

Hell, I watched a documentary on Nazi Germany that was educational this past weekend.

  • I watched the trailer and I respect the culture, but folks are deciding to sell the land; it's not being taken from them by force.

  • can you imagine if a white person had complained in a film about being enslaved by black people? gain some historical perspective, murphycline. ass hole. if you have ever been to a place like st. helena island you would see white people using up all the land and disregarding the people who surround them.

think before you write some bullshit down.

  • You folks who can't do think of anything better than to call me names; go and pony up some money to buy the land if you're so keen on preserving the culture. I sure hope you don't want to force folks to live in a museum. Sad thing is that some of you probably do. Oh, and accepting double standards is r...a..c..i..s...t. And making excuses for people based upon places like St. Helena means that you think different standards ought to apply; which again makes you a... drumroll please;a racist.

  • ...looks very interesting.
