Mcfunky, thanks for posting this.... you made my day. This tune has been one of my all-time favorites for many years, seeing it live and in color, is just fabulous.
them muhfuckers DID NOT mess about. they HURT ya with it. and they was with Sis Re. on all them classics- Live Filmore, Amazing Grace, Young Gifted, Hey Now Hey!.
Looooose and tight at the same damn time. Never was this good.
Why is it that I rarely hear live bands that sound like this nowadays? I'm not talking about style, not even about substance. I'm talking about the mix in the live sound. All too often the loudest sound are the drums, especially sternum-shattering bass drums. Forget about hearing the bass. Hell, sometimes even the vocals are half drowned. If it's a metal band, forget it - it's just drums and guitars. The bassist might as well unplug his bass and play "air bass." GET A CLUE, SOUNDMEN!
We lost the great Cornell Dupree this week. This is one of the greatest collections of funky musicians ever. Jerry Jemmott, Bernard Purdie, Cornell Dupree, King Curtis...unbelieveable. Thanks for posting.
OMG !!! Jerry Jemmott and Bernard "Pretty" Purdie ! Ft.Worth, of all the places in the world, had King Curtis, Cornell Dupree, Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman, Prince Lasha, Julius Hemphill, Charles Moffatt, and Ronald Shannon Jackson, come from the same high school (I.M Terrell, now elementary school)..damn! The Geto Boys sampled this for " Trigger-Happy N**** ". Funky !!
In 1958, King Curtis and Waylon Jennings were united in some strange world music experiment by one Buddy Holly. Now, there're all gone. The first super group.
The guy on the organ, Truman Thomas is my brother. He started his pro career playing and arranging for Jackie Wilson in 1967. He never took piano lesson. He just had the GIFT!
Here's my criteria for judging human beings: If your name isn't Gerald Joseph Stenhouse Jemmott, then fuck off.

Jerry played the bass line for the original recording of Mr. Bojangles, and his classic riffs on B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone" are unforgettable.
