Thank you for posting this video it is VERY TRUE; In American Churches the current truend is to PUSH THE LATEST BOOK as a way to replace the Bible's authority in teaching the faith. Whenever I tell those inviting me to another $15 Bible Study that I do NOT NEED THE BOOK I am given a VERY VERY HARD TIME. I tell them I already HAVE THE BIBLE and do not need another book - they look dumbfounded or label me as a trouble maker and this has occurred in several churches;NO ONE USES THE BIBLE ANYMORE

Thank you Sarah, you've made a very valid and necessary point. We need to pray concerning the state of many ministers and the message the Church is giving. Elsewhere in the book, he says we need to make a covenant with him to read one chapter everyday. Such stringent rules and regimes are not from God although RW may have good intentions. We need nothing but the Bible and God's leadership for a successful life which will come about through a variety of circumstances, means and situations. Bless

so what im wondering is? what is the point of a sermon if it is not someone's interpretation of the word. Isn't that the same as a book? if God shows you insight on a subject matter, wouldn't you want to share it with others? im just thinking out loud

If the insight and revelation is actually from God then yes, we should share it as directed by the Holy Spirit. BUT if it isn't then we are responsible for false teaching and leading people astray.

Many things we have been taught are not even in Scripture and millions have swallowed so many lies by these false leaders. I go to Saddleback. I am a born again Christian who committed my life to Jesus at Saddleback. I became aware of God's existance, my pride and separation from God and my need for repentance at Saddleback. Christians need to focus on the great Commandment and the Great Commission and stop wasting time telling other Christians they're going to hell because they don't say "repent" enough.

What is needed is for Christians to get the order right again and put God before people. To focus on Him and on pleasing Him instead of pleasing people. That way they will be more concerned with the honour of God than the praise of men which has resulted in much compromise and watering down of the gospel.

IF God isn't all loving, then God is not perfect. God must love what you call sin. I just think sin is reality, everyone who exists in this universe will do something wrong and i doubt God would hold a grudge against even the most evil person. In the end the most evil people will come to their senses and realize how they affected other peoples lives and that what they did was stupid. If God doesn't accept everyone than when i die i'd rather not exist, Christianity is just to cliquey for me.

Sin is a response, not a being. God loves us as a being, but does not love the sin that we do. That would be against the holy nature of our sinless God. Sin is so serious that it must be hated and therefore God hates sin. How can you, and imperfect being, come up with a definition of perfect? For those who've bought Warren's books, there are many good and useful purposes for them. Rip out a page, fold it in quarters, and you have a nice lil coaster to place under your coffee mug. Does your toilet run? Try balancing one on the toilet handle - it works like a charm! The list is never ending. Rick Warren's books have many practical purposes! Just don't be fooled into thinking they are Christian; they are not.

Well said. But I would say that there is nothing wrong with reading material from Spiritual people who are further along in the knowledge of the Bible than those who are new to it. The key is whether the author of the book you read is true to the scriptures or just making up things to appeal to a wider audience to sell books. I say be carefull. Know the Bible scriptures well and you wont be led astray by false teachers. The best book outside of the Bible is The Doctrine of predestination.

Just discovered this video. Excellent points SarahSLH! Same thoght/question ran through my mind at a Bible study maybe 10 yrs. ago. Church attendance was way down.I knew nothing about Warren. But the pastor's wife was saying "we've GOT TO implement this stuff to get the numbers(people)". My first thought: WHO is this hyped-up guy, and WHY is this book trumpeted above the Bible?

We use hell to blackmail children at an early age. If God exists and he sends people to hell that is not free will and almost certainly not the behavior of an all loving being. I'd rather live a true life than a life surrounded by one book so i agree with u there.

It is freewill because man has a choice about how He lives and therefore where He will spend eternity. Who said God was 'all-loving'? He loves people but He doesn't love sin, that is why he provided a Saviour, to save people from the consequences of their sin, i.e. an eternity in hell. Hell is not a horror story for naughty children but a real place where there are real people suffering right now. Those who know Jesus are concerned about the plight of the lost, that is why they share the gospel.

Well i was a little harsh, i made that comment a while ago, but the idea of God is all loving, God has to accept even those who sin because people aren't evil their acts are, so in reality they're ignorant to people's feelings and suffering. I don't know what "hell" you're talking about. Is it psychological? No God would send someone to hell even Hitler. If we truly are children of God (humans, animals, aliens, etc..) then God loves us unconditionally even Hitler.

Scjrd91, you are talking about an imagined god, a man made one. The true God is holy and just as well as loving, and because He is holy He hates sin. He doesn't overlook it, the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23) that is why Jesus died on the cross for our sin, so that we could be saved because He had paid our sin debt for us.

The "Purpose Driven Life" is making us into Gods, whereby we are using our God given skills, to set goals of our choosing which make us feel good. Worship in these new churches means Rock and Roll bands, instead of prayer, and repentance.

I don't think you get it. The Purpose Driven Life is just a guide. I think you are taking it in the wrong way. RW refers to the Bible all the time. He encourages us to read it every day and to memorize scripture. The Bible comes first in our life, and RW doesn't say otherwise. I had a real hard time understanding anything you said, so I don't know what your message is.

I agree these are companions to the bible and sometimes bring it to our view, as these books where written 2 thousand years ago with a culture unlike our own, I mean look at most of the stories in the bible they refer to agriculture and ways people can relate. They help us to become closer and better understand the bible when sometimes it can seem impersonal.

I have read Purpose Driven Life but I have not examined it closely yet. I believe that God leads and that I must choose to follow Him everyday with what I choose to do. I do not think that God forces Himself upon us nor do His teachings force me to do anything. If anything has changed me since I was born-again at age 23 it's this: God loved me first and forgave me of my sin against Him and payed my debt by Jesus Christ's perfect sacrifice.
