They usually scream when you attack the dwarf Bulbear and a larger Bulbear is present. This wakes the larger Bulbear causing it to attack. It's pretty common in the game, but if you're smart and attack the large ones first, you'll never hear it, which may explain why you never heard it.

@Vonyco Haha thanks. :) Actually it depends...I've had issues with losing Pikmin WHILE attacking the Bulborb so I sometimes take out the Bulbear first. I didn't first hear this until Pikmin 2...now I hear it when I slam them with purple Pikmin. :)

No, the big one believes that the small one is a member of its species and so doesn't really care. Most of the small bulborbs you see in Pikmin 1 and 2 are actually breadbugs mimicking bulborbs in order to survive.

Most just hang around the real ones for safety and to share their meals, others (like the spotted bulbear or the orange and black bulborb mimickers) follow the big ones so they can feed off the ones that get shaken off by the big one.
