  • @williamstoo actually linux and mac run off the same system called unix so lunix viruses will work on mac vice versa

  • Can you get malwares downloading music or movies?

  • @SouthsideDirtySouth The music or movie itself will most likely not give you the malware, but the hacker who made the torrent file could have slipped an auto-installing piece of malware that will go unnoticed when you open the file.

  • @djmvlog1 I see, thank you!

  • Will Windows be able to use Sophos? And is Vipre Antivirus still a ood virus software?

  • so wait? what would happen if i opened that .dmg?

  • @bradnightmare your computer would get destroyed

  • ok i know thare are Mac threats. i have had sophos find 4 on My system the first time i scanned. But am i correct in saying that there are no threats for Mac that can install themselves in background without you users input? you always have to install something to get infected on a Mac correct?

  • Yep porn is just like sex in real life. have enough of it and eventually you will get an infection. LOL!

  • Or maybe you could just get Linux... which is atleast 100 times better than shitty mac or windows :)

  • @cessusbangy linux has almost 1000 viruses, smart one! mac is bettter!

  • @campaingboy73 Uh, hate to break it to you, but Linux does not have 1000 or even 100 viruses. While I wouldn't say Mac or Linux is better, neither of them have anywhere near as many viruses as Windows does.

  • @genericlinuxuser not to start a fight or anything but i saw on the web that linux had about 800 something viruses and malware.

  • @campaingboy73 I'm.. actually pretty sure that it isn't that high.. Not at the moment, at least. Maybe, MAYBE if you count from 1991 to now. But since then, Linux got patched up well. Any time a security hole is found, it gets reported and patched quickly. Just like Mac OS X. Only Linux has a larger community so bugs get found fast and patches get released fast.

  • @campaingboy73 actually linux and mac run off the same system called unix so lunix viruses will work on mac vice versa

  • There's a big market opening for anti-virus on the Mac at the moment, as everyone probably thinks the software you start with your stick with , hence the reason for making it free. - I installed their the free Sopho client and it scanned my computer - however it didn't say what types of files to scan or a progress report on the files scanned files. I wonder what information Sopho sents back when it does it software update, gathering some marketing information it wouldn't surprise me.

  • Yeah, number one way to avoid viruses, don't look at porn. If you know how to keep safe online then you shouldn't really need anti-malware, especially on the mac, for now at least, but if you really want to keep safe then there's nothing wrong with anti-virus for the mac, especially sophos.

  • @jamieross1991 But sometimes, websites can get hacked and stuff, so it's safer to have at least one good a.m.

  • I hope Macs take over the Marketshare. And then when PCs are 10% the US Marketshare I can brag about how much better I am than Macs

  • Is it bad to have about 2-3 different Anti-Virus' running?

  • @Warsham1 no its just triple the protection

  • @Warsham1 it lags

  • cool i want a mac...

  • Hello Sophos.I recently downloaded Sophos Anti Virus for mac. It's a good app.

  • The virus on mac computers are called anti virus companys, we dont need them, sell your crap to PC users instead. They didnt care about mac before, but now when OSX i starting to get big, they see money. No need for anti virus on mac, not yet anyway.

  • @BustyJuggs Yes. There is. Look how Sophos has proved it. How can you say Macs *don't* need antivirus when Snow Leopard alone isn't enough? Yes, Macs get less viruses, but they ARE out there and they ARE getting to be a bigger thing. If you tell yourself your Mac doesn't need antivirus and can't gte viruses just because Snow Leopard can stop some of them, then you're fooling yourself. You're playing Russian roulette with your computer and your data.

  • This is an incomplete movie. During the installation you will be asked for your admins username and password to install. At this point you should realize that it's installing software outside your home folder. If you must fill in your username and password you should know what you are installing. Sophos stops the installation and wouldn't show you that you will get that message. Bring us real and useful info Sophos!

  • Windows 7 comes with antispyware, while Snow Leopard comes with internet malware blocking. Download Microsoft Security Essentials (Search it) for PC, and for Mac, search iAntivirus

  • @PC4861 To a point, yes, Win7 does have some blocking capabilities. UAC is a pretty good idea outside of the annoyance factor; it's saved my ass more than a few times. But regardless of the OS you use, you NEED antivirus. Use a free one like Avast or AVG if you don't want to buy one, but USE ONE, and back up all data to be safe.

  • maybe you shouldnt look at porn

  • This is a very good video, thanks for uploading it.

  • how exactly do you do all this and keep your PCs safe? Do you use a spare or something?

  • @MrJoeyWheeler I think he made the infected file and knows where is installs everything so he can remove it

  • This is really interesting. Notice the pattern here; more people are switching to Mac everyday and they're starting to come out with more malware for them.

  • @BandGeek6241 The prediction of the smarter PC users was correct. ;)

  • @BandGeek6241 and they cry when they cant run their games.

  • @BandGeek6241

    Or they hackintosh.

  • @BandGeek6241 duh because bad guys can get more people on a mac now than last year. or the year earlier.

  • i think my next computer will be a mac

  • me tooo

    cant wait

  • good choice my friend

  • Enjoy your 'Fisher's Price' "My first PC".

  • Note he said SOME forms of malware. It's not hard to create KISS virus's that will completely ruin any computer Running OSX.

  • i dont like the sound of the guy talking

  • GAY!

  • jesus fucking christ.

Fuck off sophos labs, stick to windows viruses, it's what you do best.

  • I would say perverted people should get a Mac lol

  • i was watching this like ok ok

then suddenly you started showing porn

  • I never thought a Mac would get viruses...

  • Yeah macs do have viurs the most common viurs on a mac is the ichat viurs i forgot its name too...

  • lol mac geting raped?

  • Was this the one that they had to send an updated a day or two after was ship for safety against hacker and malware I think so

  • I'm fine running XP, and I have yet to be infected. I'm running Avira 9, SUPERAntiSpyware, COMODO Firewall, and Malwarebytes'.

  • Yet to be infected on XP, I have the integrated router firewall, disabled the Windows firewall, and I'm running AntiVir Personal (that I disable when I'm gaming or making music).

So pretty much no protection whatsoever, and I still don't get viruses.

Seriously, the macs don't get viruses argument doesn't hold water for me.

  • I'm now only using Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials, with Malwarebytes' as my scanner.

  • I seriously doubt your claim. Either you are the luckiest person ever, or you have only had your computer for a few days or so... or you don't do much on your computer. I have 2 windows XP and a Mac/vista. Both windows have anti-virus. I have found a lot of viruses/trojans for windows. I don't use my windows XP computers anymore since it feels unsafe. I still don't accept many files from people due to key-logging claims, but that's another story. I have vista on my mac if I need it.

  • I've been using a PC since Windows 3.1. I use my computer pretty much all I can, so when I'm not at school or at work, I'm logged on, playing, surfing or making music.

I have indeed caught ONE virus, on Win95 that shuffled my desktop icons when I moved the mouse towards them. I wasn't running any anti-virus at the time, in fact, that's when I first started to use anti-virus software. I do take a little care when downloading stuff, and scan individual files before opening them...

  • Then what was your whole point in joining in the comments of a mac video? I pointed out the flaw in the video, and you are saying that you too even take precautions with your windows... meaning the impression you gave before of windows isn't exactly true. It isn't as safe as you made it seem to be. I don't claim that mac is 100%, I just haven't had any problems whatsoever yet. I just think if someone were to point out mac anti-virus flaws, they should find something realistic.

  • Btw, most, if not all Mac users have used a windows computer for long term. Mac users have a very good understanding of both computers, and the benefits of both. I have found a lot of viruses on my windows doing the same activities I do on my mac. I haven't found any mac viruses at all. In general, don't understand why so many window's users insult or challenge mac users when they lack the experience. I don't see why a window's user would come in this video unless they were looking to buy a mac.

  • Oh, sorry, I thought Youtube was free for all...

I'll leave then, before I cause any Mac users any cause for concern.

I was just posting to point out the virus-ridden PC cliché doesn't really hold water, sure there are some virii out there, but I can assure you, Windows users worry about them a lot less than you imagine.

It's just that I have yet to hear a pro-Mac argument that isn't an old cliché, false or irrelevant.

  • Maybe is it because no-one bothers to write any viruses for mac since its a waste of time?

  • yea, cause it cant do any damage to a unix backbone. 10% of the market uses macs. weird that not ONE of the millions on PCs was built for a mac... hmmmmm

  • you are wrong .. 5 % uses mac 2% uses linux 1% uses BSD 2% uses other. and 90% uses windows. you are wrong on that one smartpans. i use linuxmint and i love it.

  • Actually, you're wrong. In 2008, Computerworld and the NYtimes reported that LESS than 90% of the US used Windows. The Wallstreet Journal and Net Applications (industry standard for computer OS/ISP statistics) reported that 9.6% of Americans now own at least one mac.

  • go on google and type"operating system market share" you will get the latest results there. MAC is still under 5% on teh global market share. I'm not talking about US market share. :) prove me wrong now. Linux gained 3% in market share globaly. goo look up statistics.

  • @Raja221 Actually, both of you are wrong because the market share idea *doesn't matter*. Linux is gaining, yes. But more people still use Windows or Mac combined than *anyone* using a Linux-based system (Mac doesn't count here, though it IS Unix-based). Globally, Windows is still the default system, but Mac users are growing, and many people do own at least one Mac. Windows has become more Mac-like as well, because more people seem to like the Mac interface more.

  • @iWantMyMailNow Ir's a waste of time, because the OS stops them? Is that what you mean?

  • @iWantMyMailNow Lies. Go look up some of SophosLabs' other vids; you'll clearly see there ARE Mac viruses and trojans out there, more than ever before. It's because so many people use Mac now. Windows was default for years, which is why it has more viruses. Mac's only just now getting more malware written for it, because more people are using it. The virus coders go where the consumers do.

  • @queentrissa "I don't see why a window's user would come in this video unless they were looking to buy a mac."

I use Windows 7. I am not looking to buy a Mac, because Macs are horribly expensive and really not that much better than Windows running a good Antivirus/Antispyware program. I came to watch this video because I am interested in Internet security and Mac/Windows differences, so I can discuss the differences with an open mind.

  • @Sugardude I've caught SOME spyware and maybe two viruses during the time I've used a PC. I was also doing very stupid things at the time, though - so a lot of it is how web smart the user is, too. You only gain that through experience and time.

Also, before any Mac users bring up the BSOD thing, I've only ever had my old XP laptop have ONE BSOD - at the very end of its life, after its graphics drivers corrupted. No BSODs with my Win7 laptop whatsoever.

  • Ever since I owned my first pc about 6 years ago, I personally haven't gotten a single infection of any kind. Now my younger brother has done it about 2 times though. :P Its all about how "e-savvy" you are. I want to buy a macbook since I don't plan on gaming with a laptop, but I just hate the apple ads. They piss me off so much.

  • @elredplague Exactly. If you're web smart and have good antivirus/antispyware, there's no reason why a Windows machine can't be just as safe as a Mac machine. It's part computer, part user.

  • @queentrissa Funny - I used XP for several years. Caught several bits of spyware (I agree with that) but all were easily removed. Caught maybe ONE virus, which I managed to make inoperable by deleting key files, since the main files were locked and nothing could unlock them. I use Win7 now, and I've not had one problem since. Were you protecting your PCs adequately enough, with a *decent* antivirus/antispyware, and were you sweeping often? Were you downloading a lot? Doing something unsafe?

  • @Sugardude - I am in the same boat - I am running XP and Windows 7. No viruses on either. If I do any sort of risky web surfing, it's from within a virtual machine. I keep a snapshot of the fresh install, so I can browse and download all I want. If my guest OS gets compromised, I just revert to my snapshot - I'm back up and running in just a few min.

  • Well the malware is really wanting to get your Admin password so it can make it self root and open a back door to steal your info. The malware only becomes dangerous when the admin enters their password.

  • Excellent software Sophos, I hope the USB (or any other drive) Malware install bug is fixed in 10.6.1. Of course, I think it's a bit harder to accidentally install malware via a drive, but there are people that could benefit from your anti-virus.

  • If you have a Mac and are a retarded mad mouse clicker with a penchant for sexy videos beware, you might get one of the mythical infections. Of course if you have a PC you can get these infections without even clicking anything and you only notice when Sophos or Norton or AVG have been uninstalled and you wonder where the icon went.

  • Since when?

Besides, in over 15 years of Windows use, I have been hit with only one virus. The only effect of said virus was to move icons around on my desktop when I tried to click on them. I got hit by that virus at a time when I had no anti-virus software at all and I removed all of Windows' security features.

Mac have been virus free for so long because they were low in the market share, but now that every college student and his dog has one, you're in the same deal as Windows.

  • What is the anti-virus software you had.

  • Oh, is it Sophos?

  • Yes, Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Snow Leopard.

  • hes triyng to scare mac users

  • @kalkanciii He's trying to *educate* mac users so they're safer, since so many people ARE using Macs now.

The smarter Windows users have moved on from the Mac/PC feud and stuck with Windows or switched to Mac entirely. Now that Mac holds more of a market share, in the next five or so years we ARE gonna see a lot more Mac viruses and malware. They ARE out there and you can't pretend they aren't anymore.

  • You have to be really stupid to get a virus on a mac, that or extremely perverted and stupid. I have both windows and mac. On windows, I even get bots on messengers trying to lure me to their website, never had problems with mac. The video is saying if you purposely ALREADY have it on a USB stick, which you're forgetting the obvious, you wouldn't have been able to install it to put on the USB stick by using a mac, it would infect.. but you need a PC to first install the USB stick virus.

  • LOL, your comment is stupid.

  • nice, that was so original...

  • Actually, the video is saying the bundled anti-virus software that comes with your machine has flaws.

Basically what it does is scan incoming files for known virus signatures. But imagine a malicious coder were to encrypt the virus and put it in the installer for a different program, then your system become vulnerable, like if you used a USB stick.

  • Okay, I am still not seeing the problem. You are missing the point of getting the virus actually ON the USB stick in the first place. Using a mac you won't be able to get the virus in the first place to put on the USB stick to put back on a mac. If you are worrying about viruses, then even windows option would be out, because windows surely would have an anti-virus as well. The only way I see of getting the virus onto the USB is to do it on purpose.

  • For the dumbasses who think Apple dont have virus because of the market share. Windows virus, almost 95% of them are just to infect for fun and easy to make...even a boy with 15 years old can make one.. in other way.. for Mac, dont have Virus but only Malware like trojan, because that depends if the user mistakes...OsX cant get Virus because he dont run anything like Windows, by himself...and btw, hackers use UNIX system like Linux, so its a challeng for them make virus..because its hard..

  • @segr3do

What do you think a trojan is doing then

I opens up your computer for Virus attacks so NO mac is not safe

  • Yeah Macs are useless in the end anyway.

There are ways of being 100% virus free :)

    Deep Freeze or Returnil =]

  • From now on, people cannot bash PC's for Virus's.

This is something which Apple is very fake with. They say in there commercials that Macs don't get Malware (Virus's)

So from this point on, Macs are equal to PC's in terms of Malware. HA

  • not quite equal - since pc has loads more.

but macs have always been open to virus' - just hackers didnt aim at macs because of the limited market share.

but as more people get macs it will be aimed at more.

from what i hear osx is just as vulnerable as windows.

  • Yes, but people can now realise that Macs are just the same as a PC, when it comes to Security.

As Mac fanboys have claimed that they are secure and don't ever get them. Because of the way Macs are.

Anyway, I think that OSX is actually more Vulnerable. I'll send you a Link

  • There's an inherent vulnerability in Mac compared to PC.

On PC you have a unified software environment, but the hardware varies from system to system, so a malicious coder needs to look for software flaws to exploit when attempting to attack PCs.

The Mac on the other hand, has unified software and hardware, so any hardware flaws (which are a lot harder to patch too) become a possible exploit for a malicious coder to target.

Linux is becoming easier to attack these days, due to the Ubuntu craze.

  • @windowspczone Didn't Apple actually start bashing PCs LONG before Microsoft ever made those "I'm a PC" commercials (which DIDN'T bash Macs at all, by the way)? Why are you Mac-users so high on yourselves? It's a computer, and neither system's better than the other. Not even Linux is the best. It's an OS; Mac has its own problems. Saying Mac has NO ISSUES is like saying that an apple is more fungus resistant than an orange. In the end, they're BOTH vulnerable, but to different things.

  • do you practice being pretentious or does it come naturally?

  • Very interesting video and great quality.

    Thanks a lot.

  • I love macs!

  • idiot
