I'm sorry but I always hated this show. It was really well done but it it just wasn't funny or entertaining to me and I could never sympathize with the characters.
I REALLY MISS this show!! I've just got one question. Why isn't mrfxtrade's comment getting all the thumbs-ups UnitedCorpOfAmerica got!!?? Mrfxtrade's is easily more deserving! And WHY oh why is UnitedCorpOfAmerica's comment in top comments?? Are you CRAZY?? Ludicrous!!
I was watching this in syndication as a youngster. This theme is jogging memories of toys I had, Kaboom breakfast cereal and my family's Irish Setter.
This was the closest thing I had to a real father growing up, pretty sad. It made me feel good to watch this show, but at the same time it made me long for a Dad.
@goatman069 Goatman, I am sorry for your loss at such a young age. I know that feeling of emptiness as well. What really hurt is when I would get a taste of affection, from a family friend,Uncle etc, and know what it might have been like to have a male role model at such a young age. I am sorry to report I am 47 and have never been able to overcome it. Good Luck to you.
Oh how i long for the Cold War days when 'freedom' was actually a consideration in America (if for no other reason to maintain the facade of Capitalism's superiority to Communism). Today the only consideration would be 'safety'. We have to shred the Constitution to keep you safe from terrorism & today's generation just says,"yes, sir, shred it,just keep us safe". If terrorism hadn't replaced Communism as America's big enemy, who would the enemy be today. What would the defense budget be like?CIA?
I was born in 65 & even as young as 5 or 6 watching this show & many more like them I knew that I was living in special time. Don't ask me how I knew, I just did. The civil rights act just ended, I remember my mom & dad being so happy. They felt so free just to go out. & being black & from the south, that was a big deal. They was some good times, not a lot of Hi-tech gadgets, kids real enjoyed being a kid. You made do with what you had. I loved being a kid in the 70's....Man, how could you not?
@macreal65 Very well said. I was born in '63 and love growing up in the 70's. The best decade for music by far. I still listen to the Partridge Family and love every second of it
Livingston should have been the one.. I always assumed he would leave a suitor to come and care for her one night...he finds out his true feelings and they stop the courtship with a marriage. Series ending was not what I wanted
I remember this show as a kid and loving it. Jodie Foster used to appear as Eddie's friend. This show was based on a movie. Ron Howard played Eddie. The mom died suddenly in the movie.
I always wondered why Eddie's father just didn't marry Mrs.Livingston, the housekeeper. She was much better than any of the women he was dating! She was always so nice and good with Eddie as well, he'd have been lucky to marry her.
I'd forgotten that Harry wrote and performed the theme for this great show! It addressed so many topics and really was a great example of thought during what I call the "YES" generation. It didn't take long for things to change as the motto soon became "Just say no!" to almost everything!
I'm scarred for life! I just found out today (Father's Day 2011) that in TV history, the name Tom Corbett was not just a space cadet, but Eddie's father as well. Today, the name signifies the governor of Pennsylvania.
When my son would wake up for his middle of the night feeding reruns of this show were on. We would "watch" it together and I would have the best of times playing with him during this time. He was just a baby and it was so much fun. Now he is 27 years old. I want him to be a little one again. :(
This was a wonderful show. I wish they would just put the reruns of these already greats programs instead of producing more loaded with attitudes of disrespect and apathy.
Yeah we've gone backwards in social skills. The only show that would sell now is a young latino mother carpooling her kids & their thug friends to do drive by shootings. That might go over big these days.
Harry Nilsson's original title of this song was "Girlfriend", and the lyrics are almost identical to the lyrics of this theme (except for minor changes here and there). BTW - Nilsson also wrote a song called "Cuddly Toy", which was recorded by The Monkees (and sounds similar to this and "Girlfriend").
More rules = Less freedom? This show would would be canceled after the pilot episode in 2011. Bill Bixby would be the angst of the Nanny State Nation (ala Justin Beiber).
My dad and I had very few conversations. This show made me realize, at an early age, that a father and son could just talk about anything. I believe I have achieved that withh my son. I credit the show with me being a better father.
Does ANYBODY else think the name "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" is a TERRIBLE name for a show? "Courtship"?? Really? How about "Two of a Kind" or "Like Father Like Son" or "Eddie and Me". Yeah Yeah, I know it was from the movie but still..... Terrible title of a movie AND a book AND a TV show.
@GreekGuy9999 you got to be kidding it was a wonderful title and i watched it when i was little. it's a classic story of father and son this you must not understand
I loved this show, and Bill Bixby. It was so sad when he passed away and at such a young age. I never hear any mention that Jodi Foster was Eddie's playmate on this show. My Favorite Martian was a great show as well. Brandon Cruz was such a little cutie pie.
I remember the episode where Eddie was climbing on the railings of the balcony and Mrs Livingston freaked out... and another where Corbett was dating a black woman and her son told Eddie (they were about the same age) that "he didn't have to wash", and Eddie being quite upset at that...
This is a classic TV show. It is one of the three that Bill Bixby is remembered for. The other two being "The Incredible Hulk" and "My Favorite Martian". All three are great shows.
Wonderful theme song by Harry Nilsson, who had just had his first son at the time. Which of course, he abandoned and didn't see til he was an adult. If only life were like a song!
So many of these TV shows from when I was a kid had terrific theme songs. Now most shows stink and they don't even have theme songs. Just more stupid commercials.
How ironic and sad that Bill was first separated from his young son by divorce and then a year or so later by death due to the negligence of his ex-wife, Brenda Benet. Bill Bixby was a wonderful person and this is proof that many time Dad's are the better parents and should be given custody. Also shows that divorce and death are comparable in their pain and consequences in life.

@parkman35 There is nothing with any real meaning in it todays TV line up. Oprah ?
DOC. Phil, Jon and Kate, = Mindless twaddle. And what happened to catchy theme songs dog on it. Sorry. da- da- da -da -da- da -da- da-da- da -da,whoops : )
@zczaldy Hey, dont forget, there's also 'Law And Order,.. ohh man, theres no shortage of THAT one anymore ( it's still being produced on network tv and is run virtualy constantly on several different syndicated channels )!!
WOW!! This kind of television is so missed, and needed for the children today. I can look back at this show and feel great, but what shows do my grandchildren have to say the same when they grow older? Thanks I love and needed this memory.
This was my favorite show when I was a kid. I was pretty young but I'm sure I just watched it because I was so deeply in love with Bill Bixby and convinced I would marry him someday.
Ah, me too! I had a big crush on Bill Bixby. This show was so sweet and had so many life lessons. TV now is so bad. Everybody knows it, but nobody will produce a quality family series now. Why is that?
@AirmanAustin They won't do it because Hollywood is populated by godless amoral men-bashing liberals. And because of that, all we see on TV are disfunctional families with weak leading men, bitchy women and bratty, arrogant kids. That's why reality TV is so big. That's why I watch Pawn Stars and Ice Road Truckers rather than scripted TV.
@AirmanAustin The reason that TV doesn't produce shows like this anymore is laziness, pure and simple. They know that their target audience is made up of mindless sheep who like the sheer idiocy of all the identical "reality" shows. "snowrocket", who responded to you before me, claims he watches only reality TV rather than scripted TV - is he kidding? TV writers and executives, as well as their target audience, are lazy and don't want to use their brains.
This has always been a favorite of mine! Nobody I have asked has ever even heard of it, I was beginning to think it was a figment of my imagination! Thanks for posting this!
Anyone know if anyone sells these seasons on DVD! I have been looking for them for YEARS. They have practically every other crappy show out there on DVD.
Bill Bixby was a childhood idol of mine. The openings to this show were so wildly philosophical, and here was the first Dad who was both masculine and "metro" (before the term existed). If I become a Dad in my 40s, I'll be pulling from these eps from my very early childhood. Love this. Thanks for posting it.
That's when television catered to the common household. One could sit down after dinner with a nice cold can of beer along with the wife and kids and enjoy a nice sitcom. Not in '09. You better keep the remote handy and thumb on the mute button. Better yet, the hell with the idiot box. Nothing but sex, drugs, murder and BS music.
warthog333 is exactly what a purports to be a "wild pig" . This was a great show that empowered the child and allowed him to have a(many) conversations with his father that enforced their bond and allowed that child to ask questions in a loving and accepting environment. I saw the actor that played "Eddie" years later when he was an adult on a late night TV program and he had nothing but the best things to say about Bill Bixby and the show.
This had to be the LAMEST show on TV. Family Affair was a close second, but this show made my skin curdle. Just sitting here typing about it makes me want to turn inside-out. HELP!
when i was a kid, they were showing this in syndication. i didnt watch the show (STUPID!!!) but i do remember the song and opening segment. it was NEVER shown like this. but still...

WOW!! This kind of television is so missed, and needed for the children today. I can look back at this show and feel great, but what shows do my grandchildren have to say the same when they grow older? Thanks I love and needed this memory.

This was my favorite show when I was a kid. I was pretty young but I'm sure I just watched it because I was so deeply in love with Bill Bixby and convinced I would marry him someday.
xxstarbuck65xx 1 year ago
Ah, me too! I had a big crush on Bill Bixby. This show was so sweet and had so many life lessons. TV now is so bad. Everybody knows it, but nobody will produce a quality family series now. Why is that?
AirmanAustin 1 year ago
@AirmanAustin They won't do it because Hollywood is populated by godless amoral men-bashing liberals. And because of that, all we see on TV are disfunctional families with weak leading men, bitchy women and bratty, arrogant kids. That's why reality TV is so big. That's why I watch Pawn Stars and Ice Road Truckers rather than scripted TV.
snowrocket 1 year ago
@AirmanAustin The reason that TV doesn't produce shows like this anymore is laziness, pure and simple. They know that their target audience is made up of mindless sheep who like the sheer idiocy of all the identical "reality" shows. "snowrocket", who responded to you before me, claims he watches only reality TV rather than scripted TV - is he kidding? TV writers and executives, as well as their target audience, are lazy and don't want to use their brains.

I completely agree... This is a model for the ages.

I saw the actor that played "Eddie" years later when he was an adult on a late night TV program and he had nothing but the best things to say about Bill Bixby and the show.
crhatch94 2 years ago
your comment means you don't know very much about how children think. the way this show was written shows how children think at this age.

This had to be the LAMEST show on TV. Family Affair was a close second, but this show made my skin curdle. Just sitting here typing about it makes me want to turn inside-out. HELP!
Warthog333 2 years ago
Your right. Courtship of Eddies father WAS the lamest!
