Your 2nd assessment about fasting is very wrong. Fasting is a natural detox. It also gives your organs a break from the constant influx of food. Fasting is not a fad... the idea has been around for thousand of years. Our ancestors voluntarily fasted for weeks at a time for spiritual reasons, and many religions do it to this day to cleanse the mind, body, and spirit.

@SolidGaby Ha I not only have my BSN but I am an RD. I deal with these questions on a daily bases. I know many physicians who approve of fasting and recommend it in certain situations. You have to understand the process of ketosis to understand fasting. I am not saying it is something the average person needs to do by any means. Muscles aren't gonna melt away in a couple of hrs without food....glycogen stores don't deplete completely in a day also...

However, fasting is an amazing tool for eliminating toxins and accumlated waste in the body.. And it should be done by well informed person, perhaps with guidance of several experienced faster mentors.
Lemonade diet....I was on it for 10 days 2 months ago and lost 10 lb....then when I back to soild food, I gain back that 10 lbs and some. even the soild food are salad, high protein, all healthy for my body. My body was starving and absorb ALL it could. Now i'm back to my normal weight but my skin has strech....

Most of those tips were great! However, I disagree with the concept of eating alone - what are you going to do? Lock yourself away and eat by yourself just so you can be skinny? Why not dine with family and friends, and focus on the conversation and lovely time spent with them instead of over-stuffing your face?
I agree with this. Most of the time I spend at meals is actually talking. Conversation is such a back and forth that having food in your mouth can really slow down the flow of it. What Shape was saying also makes some sense though because when you're alone you can really listen to what your stomach is saying.
when you're eating with people you spend more time in front of the food.. so you naturally eat more... and then somebody else is ordering coffee... which you probably normally wouldn't drink.. but since it sounds like a good idea you take on too, and so on ;) you get the idea ...

I think I have a high metabolism - sometime I get hungry when I'm sleeping, so hungry that I had to get up and have something in my stomach

I totally agree, 3rdgeneration22. There are lots of 'closet' eaters who over-eat when they're alone (I've been guilty of it before). I usually eat less when I'm with friends or family, because I'm talking and interacting more, instead of focusing on the food.
I usually don't eat when I'm with people, or when I can get busy. I may not eat for a whole day if I always have something to do. And I get emberassed if I eat in front of people, because they are probably thinking "she should just stay away from the food for a year". Though, they are kinda right.

As someone said before, detoxing and fasting have been around since the beginning of time. What is happening today is a symptom of western society's exploitation of any and everything in life. Those who do this as a fad are taking this out of context. There are those in remote parts of the world who have purposes of healing their bodies by fasting. Ultimately Americans need to eat healthy & do away with traditional American food9i.e. Southern cooking, Soul Food).
Fasting is good, but not to lose weight. People have been fasting for thousands of years. In addition, ever notice why you're not hungary when your sick? -Your body fasts itself to it can spend energy on healing while eliminating the bad stuff. I've done 5 and 7 days fasts before and feel much better after. I think it's like resetting yourself back to 0. Again, I don't recommend it to lost weight but to feel good.

moondreamer68 im sorry for your husbands loss but an older person should probably not do a fast because it is only recomended to young healthy people and im sure his fasting is what made the ulser worse. people can die from ulsers even tho they arent fasting. fasting isnt lethal all im saying is a fast can be done and it can be beneficial if done right.

fasting is not lethal, starvation is. fasting is to not eat for a period of time and reintroduce FOOD when the fast is OVER. Starvation is when you start a fast and dont REINTRODUCE food into your body eventually DIE.

fasting can be lethal... but there are medical reasons how that can happen during the detox process of fasting. However, fasting is an amazing tool for eliminating toxins and accumlated waste in the body.. And it should be done by well informed person, perhaps with guidance of several experienced faster mentors.

Lemonade diet....I was on it for 10 days 2 months ago and lost 10 lb....then when I back to soild food, I gain back that 10 lbs and some. even the soild food are salad, high protein, all healthy for my body. My body was starving and absorb ALL it could. Now i'm back to my normal weight but my skin has strech....

Most of those tips were great! However, I disagree with the concept of eating alone - what are you going to do? Lock yourself away and eat by yourself just so you can be skinny? Why not dine with family and friends, and focus on the conversation and lovely time spent with them instead of over-stuffing your face?

I agree with this. Most of the time I spend at meals is actually talking. Conversation is such a back and forth that having food in your mouth can really slow down the flow of it. What Shape was saying also makes some sense though because when you're alone you can really listen to what your stomach is saying.

when you're eating with people you spend more time in front of the food.. so you naturally eat more... and then somebody else is ordering coffee... which you probably normally wouldn't drink.. but since it sounds like a good idea you take on too, and so on ;) you get the idea ...

It's not about hunger; you need food in your system first thing in the morning for many reasons. Your body is like a car and it needs fuel to run, and you also need to keep your metabolism alive or else you'll gain weight. The first thing future sumo wrestler do to gain weight is go off breakfast.

totally agree - think about it, between going to bed and waking up - you're body does not consume food for 5 to 8 hours (depends on how long you sleep)
I think I have a high metabolism - sometime I get hungry when I'm sleeping, so hungry that I had to get up and have something in my stomach

I totally agree, 3rdgeneration22. There are lots of 'closet' eaters who over-eat when they're alone (I've been guilty of it before). I usually eat less when I'm with friends or family, because I'm talking and interacting more, instead of focusing on the food.

I usually don't eat when I'm with people, or when I can get busy. I may not eat for a whole day if I always have something to do. And I get emberassed if I eat in front of people, because they are probably thinking "she should just stay away from the food for a year". Though, they are kinda right.

fasting is not for loosig weighting its cleanses spirit and body so we can function better and you dont die. muslims, jews, and many other spiritual gruops fast all the time its not damaging, well as long you are strong person to begin. fasting is good but should not be taken out of its spiritual context. xx

As someone said before, detoxing and fasting have been around since the beginning of time. What is happening today is a symptom of western society's exploitation of any and everything in life. Those who do this as a fad are taking this out of context. There are those in remote parts of the world who have purposes of healing their bodies by fasting. Ultimately Americans need to eat healthy & do away with traditional American food9i.e. Southern cooking, Soul Food).

Fasting is good, but not to lose weight. People have been fasting for thousands of years. In addition, ever notice why you're not hungary when your sick? -Your body fasts itself to it can spend energy on healing while eliminating the bad stuff. I've done 5 and 7 days fasts before and feel much better after. I think it's like resetting yourself back to 0. Again, I don't recommend it to lost weight but to feel good.

yeah.. well "detox" is just losing the water weight. our body naturally detox the toxins so we don't need to fast to detox. this is dangerous because once you get back to your "normal" eating, you will gain the weight back,..
healthy daily diet is GOOD: lotsa water, fruits & vegetables, and healthy amount of exercising.

The skepticism comes from the fact that comprehensive, peer reviewed research almost always fails to show any benefit to them, and frequently shows a relationship between detoxing and deficiencies in hormones, vitamins, minerals, etc. I'm glad that you say they helped you, and if they do then keep it up, but would you concede that you were predisposed to thinking it would help you? That is to say, you were already willing to buy the detox kit and try it out because you assumed it would help.

The supporters of the "Detox" concept don't name a specific toxin which is measurably lower in one's body after a Detox than before.

The best way to "detox" is to eat CLEAN food. This means EAT ORGANIC FOODS. Stay away from excitotoxins and ALL processed foods. Also, to comment on fasting. Fasting is actually a good way to detox. The best way to approach a fast is to plan it ahead of time and eat CLEAN fruits for that day your fasting. This will cause some of the toxins that are stored on fat cells to break away and be released into the bloodstream and out of the body. Fasting should be no longer than 48 hours per 3 months.
