Loved this as a child and that other show think it was the enchanted garden and these statues of dinosaurs or a rhino came to life and these kids had hid inside it
I thought this was a good video, (as a kid). Imagine being able to travel anywhere in the world (for free) on a carpet. I then saw Bedknobs and Broomsticks and I then thought that a comfortable ride on a nice mattress was the real answer.
Anyone whom has laid on a carpet down on the floor would really relish the opportunity to ride on a nice comfy bed instead, which is where I'm going now
@blueyodeller I never saw this as a kid. I think I might have seen Bedknobs and Broomsticks though and I love Mary Poppins too and I always like Pippy Longstocking as well. Anyway I loved reading your comment it made me laugh..which is always nice..
any chance kizzy from 1976 can be uploaded on here about a gypsy girl that lived in a caravan with her grandmother very hard to find but a great programme.
Thanks for posting this. Loved this show as a kid. Ghosts of Motley Hall and Famous Five as well. I wish there were shows like this now for my kids. Don't suppose anyone remembers one particular show where an old vaudeville fellow catches a bullet ? Sorry, not much of a clue. Just a fragment of a memory. Thanks again

i wonder is there a chance if u tube has got this. can they get hold of a tv programme from the same year 1976 called kizzy on here ive tried every where to get that i cant even see it on here and you tube usallly has everything
someone remember if in this kids movie was an MECHANICAL OWL inside, not a Phoenix but a grey mechanical owl with other guys all around in a house. In any case the phoenix or an Owl has got something like red eyes that became red & doing something like laser-eye or something like that?!
The story is similar at this movie but i remember very well this OWL.
Please help me in this problem because is from 30 years that i remember that bird!!!
The children's series where the statues came to life was "The Enchanted Castle" - the same question had been driving me mad too! Both series are based on books written by the same author - E. Nesbitt. I had totally forgotten about "The Pheonix and the Carpet" until I saw the book in a second hand book shop, and then the memories came flooding back!
All I remember from this is watching a scene where the phoenix first comes out the fireplace, and another where they are flying and then land on a volcano or something, and I loved it so much, but I never got to see it again.
I have never known that there is a film version of that book. I liked reading the book as a child. Does anyone have the whole movie/series? Would like to watch it.
I'd love to see A Traveller in Time again - the Alison Uttley book it was based on was a childhood favourite. Other programmes that seem to have disappeared into the ether include The Strange Affair of Adelaide Harris, Smith and The Little Princess. Happily, I discovered that Midnight is a Place is now out on DVD.
This was what I was looking for. I used to watch all these and there used to be a real old miserable witch of a woman in it I remember. I really did not realise it was from 1976 OMG!
The BBC should bring out all the classic Dorothea Brooking shows on DVD - this one, A Traveller in Time, Tom's Midnight Garden, The Moon Stallion, The Secret Garden and Kizzy.
AAAahhh...man...memories of Mr. Goldring's library class at Happy Valley Elementary School (yes that was the real name). Like someone said before, the exact moment i remember from the show...
Yep,I remember being made to watch this program...found it so dull and boring..seeing this brings back memories of being a fed up 7 year old all over again!
Yep,I remember being made to watch this program, found it so dull and boring...this brings back those horible memories of me being a 7 year old fed up kid all over again!
Probably the first children's drama I made I point of watching (aged 5 or 6). Seeing this clip brought a lot of very old memories back. Gratifyingly, it's still superb stuff!
hi, i am looking for this serial so long that i can't believe i found it now ! only one question... there's anyone who ownes a dvd or a vhs of this serial ? or anyone sharing it anywhere in the web !?!?!
Brilliant! Thanks SO VERY MUCH for the posting - I've been looking for this for years. Was my absolute favourite program growing up... (close my eyes and wish for a DVD to come out). Cheers!
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!!!!! Pass this around on three different videos and you will become famous in just a week!!! THIS IS NOT A LIE!!!! How do you think Paris became a famous singer all of a sudden? Because she did this. So if you pass this around three times in different videos, you will become famous in just a week. HINT this is no ordinary chain letter, this is for real!!! DO IT!!!
how ace is this? can anyone remember the name of the kids tv series out the same time as this, it was about statues in a garden that came alive in front of children at night, the question has been driving me nuts
@L43CLARE - - - - - Perhaps it's pointless me responding to a question you posed three years ago, but were they "statues", or "rocks". There was a programme called "Escape Into The Night", based on the novel "Marianne Dreams".
.
I will spare you most of the details (available on other websites), but in order to escape, the two children had to shine a torchlight at the rocks.
@L43CLARE , god i have been looking for the same series!. Thought it was Moondial or Toms midnight garden but i'm afraid not. The statues came alive at night, could it be an earlier episode of one of these series perharps, does anyone know!!??
@L43CLARE The statues coming alive at midnight was The Enchanted Castle. also by E Nesbit. I long for the BBC to put it on DVD and this wonderful The Phoenix and the carpet :)
@T6CLUB I don't know. I can't even remembrer posting about this video..what was my original comment on this do you know? I am sorry, my memory must be failing me. I am thinking that I either got this DVD from the library or my mom had it at her house for my neices this summer when I was visting her, at any rate try amazon.com they normally have everything!!
I've been looking for a while to find the original release of the Golden Phoenix & the Magic Carpet (or the Phoenix & the Carpet)on DVD or Video but have only been able to find re-makes, so it was great to finally find a couple of clips here!

I was 6 when this was aired. That Phoenix used to scare the crap out of me. Especially coming out of the fireplace.
