@Mellathor smothered it. sharks need to keep moving to keep water(oxygen) moving through their gills. By covering the gills and holding it still, the octopus smothered it....like putting a pillow over your face. Two interesting points: sharks are powerful "burst" swimmers...it doesn't look like it struggled violently, as you'd expect of a smothered victim. Also, octopi are smart, which makes this struggle more interesting. The octopus didn't randomly grab the shark, it did so precisely.
