  • Ok . so what if you jump or dive off the side.. where is the friggin ladder ?

  • I would like all those "public option" supporters to explain me in what way public is better than private, since it takes entrusting the public property to government bureaucrats with a very silly assumption that they are any more honest and interested in public good than those gruesome capitalists....

  • looks like an overcrowded ghetto where you can get rid of bodies easily by throwing them overboard.

    Pass.

  • This floating island would probably work great until the libertarians had some liberal kids.

  • @kriskats19 . place looks like a prison to me

  • looks like floating favelas

  • When a wave comes it will be ironic to get a real reporting on EpicFail

  • Needs way more places for gardening. This would be great for a resort, but it doesn't seem very practical at first look.

  • Too all the "Where will the food/ecom go" peeps,

You have to understand that the RICH people will earn their money on land and ship there gold to their sea home, there they will buy the nice food from other countries and import the finest things in Life, There Ecom will people Billionaires Earning Huge interests rates or having companies in other places. There will be no trade, they basically saw "The man with the golden gun" and wish they were Scaramanga

  • You try and explain basic Laws and regs to a Libertarian and they look at you like your trying to put them in some Orwellian novel. Fact is if they built that place it would be all well and good till some kid fell off the side of the oil rig and drowned, Then suddenly they realise that Building Laws and regs save lives, and they have to go through 50 years of health and safety with people dying so they can relearn.....

  • @gihaification That's the great thing about these "mini-countries", you can run experiments. Have two identical countries, one with regs and another without and see what kind of differences occur as a result. Not just the rate of accidental deaths but all significant differences. Then you can calculate whether society as a whole is better off with or without those regs. For the first time in history economists, social scientists and political theorists will be able to run proper experiments.

  • @studentofsmith I think you need to read any of the 1000's of essays on why Ayn Rand was wrong... The idea that building codes, fire/electrical safety laws might be "experiments" to be run appals me, how many people will have to die again so we can re learn something that is sooo obvious....

  • @gihaification Rand has nothing to do with this. You want to know me, read Milton Friedman.

Human life is not infinitely valuable. We could make cars 100% safe but they'd be built like tanks and cost a million dollars. There is an optimal level of safety beyond which diminishing returns causes society as a whole to be worse off. Taking the view that the market is better equiped to find that point is a perfectly respectable position supported by considerable scholarly research.

  • @studentofsmith I dont expect conditions to be 100%, nor do I expect people to pay millions to lower risk by .0000001%. However I do expect obvious safety standards and preventions to be in place, *Stanard construction methods, Electical/gas/water/Fire safety, These Seastead places will have 0 building codes.... Does that level of regulation sound safe?

If the market is all knowing why hasnt it fixed the Libertarian paradise that is Somalia? or perhaps why hasnt China improved its safety?

  • @gihaification It is reasonable to assume anyone who undertakes the expense of constructing a building will take precautions against structural collapse, otherwise they will be unable to get insurance. One could even foresee independent organizations certifying building as safe in the same way we certify fair trade coffee and chocolate.

Libertarianism requires a government, Somalia has none. And many companies in China have improved safety in an effort to attract employees.

  • @studentofsmith But if you lived next to someone on that island would you not want to be sure that they have passed safety regulation? or just asssumed they did, then when the island hits a storm find out they didnt and your house is crushed under theres?

Somalia has an army and police, Thats all the Govt most libertarians want, China still has some of the worst safety records. The freemarket needs laws and regulations to perform well, without conmen and abuse creates a rush to the bottom.

  • @gihaification Do you begin to see the value in experimentation? I've had this argument before, I'm sure you have as well. The results of these seasteading experiments will allow us to base our arguments more on facts and less on speculation.

Besides, don't you have some ideas for how to improve society? Wouldn't it be better to test them out on a small scale before petitioning the government to implement them on a large scale and possibly do a lot of damage if it turns out you're wrong?

  • @studentofsmith I can agree with the idea, but the tests people are asking to run are obviously flawed. There are numerious essays showing how libertarian views are flawed, and theres loads of examples of how companies would abuse a no law/reg society. Even the idea of living on an oilrig and testing this new society is flawed as they are not starting on an even playing field, The richer people will have more of an advantage over the poorer. To truely test your ideas, You need a clean start.

  • @gihaification I agree the current proposals fall well short of any valid scientific methodology but I see in them the potential to create a format in which valid experiments can be run. That being said a clean start would actually invalidate an experiment. If you're proposing a society adopt your policies then you need to simulate that society as closely as possible. Sure, maybe libertarianism works when everyone's young, strong, healthy and well-off but that's not the real world.

  • @gihaification There are numerious essays showing how libertarian views are not flawed... what's your point?

  • @UrbyKris You skipped past all the rest of what I wrote just to pick up 1 line... Whats your point?

  • @gihaification all your statements were either void assumptions or appeals to authority without even a link.

  • @gihaification "Somalia has an army and police, Thats all the Govt most libertarians want,.."

You forgot a judicial sistem. This "go live in Somalia argument is quite stupid. Somalia was poor when it had the govorment (which brought it down) and is poor now.

  • @UrbyKris so.undp org/index.php/Somalia-Stories/Puntland-judges-get-training-on-HIV/AIDS.html

Here we see they have judges/justice system, Dont nit pick explain please...

How is Somalia argument wrong? Why is the libertarian philosophy not working for them? How is Somalia not a libertarian paradise?

  • @gihaification Ever heard of Siad Barre?

  • @UrbyKris So 1 dictator means somalia can never be libertarian paradise? its been 20 years since he was in power, how long does Libertarian ideals need before they improve a country?

Either explain that... Or Somalia is the libertarian paradise and it proves that Libertarians are full of s**t

  • @gihaification It's cute how you think your Somalia argument is valid :) I'll let you enjoy it till tomorow since I'm going to bed now...

  • @UrbyKris "It's cute how you think your Somalia argument is valid :)" AKA, I don’t like the Somalia argument as it’s completely true, So I’m going to ignore it and live in ignorance"

How about we go about this differently, why don’t you tell me what you like about libertarianism? What do you think would improve under a Libertarian leader? Please provide proof if you can.

  • @gihaification you wish my ignorant little statist friend, you wish.

See the funny thing about Somalia is that it's still a 3rd world country and must be eveluated as such and compared to its neighbours. In contrast to it's "peers" (Kenya, Djibouti etc) it's performing much better in terms of economics and tech-advances. And Puntland that you mentiond before is just a part of Somalia. They also have alot of Islamists there which can never be good.

  • @UrbyKris From what ive seen Somalia has the lowest GDP in africa, can you provide some data showing Somalia doing well? Else I'm gonner call BS on all of that. So libertarian ideals only work with christians? I though Libertarians were open to all social areas? Or is religion regulated!

Statist? is this the only libertarians know? If you want to call me a name call me a Liberal, Thats what I am.

  • @gihaification Read the essay "Better off Stateless" for the data. I don't think "libertarian" (which I'm not, but let's not get in to that) ideals work well with christians either. But christians tend to be less extreme than Islamists. Religion is only supposed to be "regulated" by being separated from the state.

And I think I'll stick with statist... a name with liberty in it just doesn't ring well with your type. Continued in post 2..

  • @gihaification Also, Somalia's "governments" are not really organized as they are merely emergent and there's more than one. It's not libertarianism or capitalism, it's anarchy.

By the same logic as you say "why don't you move to Somalia" I could as you why you don't move to north Korea. And you should also explain why the economy in America was doing better when it was less regulated. And the success of countries like Hong-Kong which has little regulations.

  • @UrbyKris But small Govt with limited power that can be rivalled by a rich guy and his private army is what L's want! This is why Govt has to be the unrivalled superpower of the land.

North Korea is a dictatorship. Nothing like what a liberal wants.

    American ecom

Started by Rich people with the backing of slaves, grew at a point in time when Oil was becoming the Main power, and it had loads of it, after ww2 they were the biggest Manufacturer who wasn’t bombed and destroyed.

  • @gihaification There are no private armies in an objectivist socity.

"North Korea is a dictatorship. Nothing like what a liberal wants."

Well Somalia is an anarchy, nothing like what objectivists want.

    About America:

Actually the the north that didn't have slavery produced more then the south. And alot of countries have oil, but no people who'd know what to do with it.

After ww2? Lol... that's when they were getting weaker.

  • @UrbyKris from end of ww2 to Reagan was your best years..... Perhaps you might do some research into the Growth years vs pres vs Debt. See what you find out?

America was founded on Slaves, Who built everything? who farmed the food? who picked the cotton that made people rich? The cheap labour allowed america to grow. The North had the factories....

Somalia isnt anarchy though, It has an army a Govt and justice system, I've shown you that, So what else is wrong with Somalia?

  • @UrbyKris from end of ww2 to Reagan was your best years..... Perhaps you might do some research into the Growth years vs pres vs Debt. See what you find out?

Somalia isnt anarchy though, It has an army a Govt and justice system, I've shown you that, So what else is wrong with Somalia?

  • @gihaification The great depression was caused by the FED which lead to the contraction of the money supply by 25 percent. Then they had the Smoot-Hawley Act which increased US tariffs by 50 percent. Herbert Hoover also increased the taxses to 60%. The new deal then made everything even worse.

Slaves worked in the south and made non industrious people rich. The north actually made progress.

You haven't shown anything about Somalia. The link you gave refered to...

  • @gihaification ... was talking about a "government" inside Somalia and not a government of Somailia. The justice sistem isn't centralized and is to a large extent islamic.

  • @UrbyKris They had a Huge advantage during this time, however Reagan years are where it all started to fall apart, They cut taxes too much and cut back on funding new techs and pretty much gave up on finding alternative power sources.

Its a complicated area but has nothing todo with "Less Regulation" Regulation creates jobs

    cleantechnica com/2011/11/21/epa-regulations-create-jobs-even-electric-company-ceos-will-tell-you-that/

Hong Kong has loads of regulation, its a myth that it isnt.

  • @gihaification

"Hong Kong has loads of regulation, its a myth that it isnt."

Haha... right. Somalia is not a libertarian paradise. It's just a myth that it is.

So what if some regulation create jobs? So do giant government bureaucracies.

And the biggest economic mistakes were actually made by Roosevelt.

  • @UrbyKris Show me how Hong kong is less regulated then please?

Great depression was solved how? Oh yes by WW2 manufactoring and Regulation....

"So what is regulation create jobs?

Your not very good at being a libertarian are you? Your suppost to believe that Less regulation creates jobs! Regulation creating Jobs with what Liberals believe, (Ya know the One thats backed up by facts not crazy!)

Come on Tell me why Somalia isnt a libertarian paradise! Debunk that myth for me!

  • @gihaification Aft ww2 Hong Kong had no minimum wage, low taxes, no tariffs and capital controls. And they were doing very well. From 1979 to 1984 Hong Kong GDP grew despite the recession around the world.

The WW2 didn't solve the great depression... the unemployment dropped because of the drafts

(Higgs). And what "regulations" are you refering to?

Business creates useful jobs. I said that some regulations MIGHT create jobs I don't know, but "jobs" aren't the measureof quality

  • @UrbyKris you do realise the years you are talking about Hong Kong was under British rule? I mean that socialist commie nation that loves regulations.

Erm most economists would disagree with you. America created loads of jobs selling/creating arms during the war.

Glass–Steagall Act was the regulation, Perhaps you should consider this one, cause as soon as it was repealed.....

"Business only creates useful jobs" wow, you talk as if no private company ever did anything wrong...

  • Comment removed

  • @gihaification Well I doesn't really matter if they were under the British... thier policies were still the same.

About the war... read the Higgs article. There's data on how the drafts reduced... can't post link, google higgs wartime.

"Glass–Steagall Act was the regulation, Perhaps you should consider this one, cause as soon as it was repealed..." As soon as it was repealed what? The cause of the depression was the FED printing money.

  • @gihaification ""Business only creates useful jobs" wow, you talk as if no private company ever did anything wrong..."

You seem to have modified my comment a bit. And I never said that no private company ever did anything wrong. But they don't hire people they don't need... hence useful jobs

  • @UrbyKris So Govt teachers, firefighters, cops, garbage men, social workers, ETC are not useful jobs or hire in excess?

Your point is very biased and seems totaly at odds with reality.... But then again we know what kind of society doesnt hire in excess, well doesnt hire much of anyone!

Welcome to the libertarian paradise of Somalia!

So when britain had regulations in Hong Kong it was good? what about the free markets u tout... Oh right!, Doesnt exist. Just want to claim it does!

  • @gihaification Teachers are usually bad (should be private as those schools are doing better), firefighters could be private, garbage men should be private, social workers ARE useless. Cops are legitimate. I didn't say that the government always makes useless jobs. I said that the private sector doesn't.

"Your point is very biased and seems totaly at odds with reality"

That's just a desperete assertment. I could make a similar one.

    Somalia in next post:

  • @UrbyKris When I say "At odds with reality" I'm saying you have nothing to back up your points, I've given you links to prove that Public is better then private for healthcare. Ive yet to see you give any data to support your views.

Why would Firefighters/garbage men better as a private company? Where do private schools do better then public?

Give some context to your views please.

  • @gihaification I've given you a link that explains healthcare...

"Why would Firefighters/garbage men better as a private company?"

Because companies are more efficient at what they do, since they don't have an unlimited money pool.

Where do private schools do better then public?

    Link: capenet.org /facts.html

  • @gihaification Somalia doesn't have a proper government you idiot... god damn it... get it it to your thick skull! The link you gave was refering to Puntland. That's a region in Somalia with an emergent government.

Look I never said that Hong Kong had no regulations... but it had less and was better for it.

  • @UrbyKris

    somaligovernment org/

How does it not have a Govt? It has a Website! They clearly have a Functioning Govt and army,

That story was just the first link I found. Even basic research completely destroys your views, That was the point of the link

    en.wikipedia org/wiki/Judiciary_of_Somalia

But srsly Come on! What would Somalia need to-do to become a libertarian Paradise? Why is Somalia not working right now? Explain why libertarianism doesn’t work in Somalia?

  • @gihaification The Somali "Government" controls only a small portion of the land. And where there's no one in "power" the local warlords fight for dominance and there isn't much respect for property rights there. Do you really have to use the most tired and stupid argument against freedom?

But I understand... it's the only strawman you have left to beat. You gave up on your other points.

  • @UrbyKris "Gave up on other points" wow, I let those slide as you were so inept at answering anything, I kinda felt bad for you. Unless you sudenly got some data?

Still you got to local warlords and prop rights. They have a Justice system, so why aren’t people suing? You just argued for nearly every Govt employee could be done Privately, So really those War lords are just Private Police! They enforce there laws. Libertarianism in action!

Still sounds like a Libertarian paradise to me!

  • @gihaification "I let those slide as you were so inept at answering anything, I kinda felt bad for you. Unless you sudenly got some data?"

Lol, as if you provided links for all your arguments... But tell me where you were inept at understanding and I'll clarify.

    Somalia

The local warlords are a bunch of bandits fighting for dominance in places where peoples rights are not enforced. I never said that police should be private... I even said they shouldn't be. Stop being dishonest

  • @UrbyKris Schools - Do you think that all public schools should be shut down and only private schools left? (I don't mind people paying to go to private aslong as the Govt has public schools for everyone else)

I was more interested in any data you could find that supports your ideas about a private Firefighters and Garbage men!

Wheres the link to your private healthcare system.

Most liberals do not have a problem with private being avaliable, aslong as there is a public option ran.

  • @gihaification Yes I think all public schools should be shut down because 1. they are shitty and 2. because I don't think your justified in forcibly takeing someones money for a service they don't even use or ever opted for. And the prices would go down due to more demand...

As for "links" about firefighters and garbage man... I don't know what kind of links you want? I mean can't you see patterns? But I'll post to links in the next comment anyway:

  • @UrbyKris How will poor people learn? or do you plan to keep the poor constantly poor as they will not be able to get an education and better work?

As in Links, Can you supply and kind of evidence that Private sector fire fighters would/could work,

The Obvious problem with them, (just like the post office) There are some areas that are super easy to cover, and some who aren’t, the one who are easy get covered, and the private doesn’t cover the harder ones cause it’s not as profitable.

  • @gihaification I gave you two links ffs... are you missing some of my comments?

How will the poor learn? That's like asking how they get their food now that there's no public food supply.

And for all the stuff you demand links for you sure don't provide many...

  • @UrbyKris I just gave you a link for your Somalia argument,

I'm asking for a link to support your ideas for private fire and garbage men.... as I've not heard of any country that does this.

Lets think about your school argument though

    pewsocialtrends org/2011/07/26/wealth-gaps-rise-to-record-highs-between-whites-blacks-hispanics/

Here we see that your cash for schools would allow whites to get good jobs and Blacks and Hispanic would be stuck being poor. This is pretty racist....

  • @gihaification "I just gave you a link for your Somalia argument" What link?

The links that I gave are:

    reason.org /files /c2bbfe415eccfdff424a2bf7c8a20585 .pdf -Fire

    the globe and mail.com /news /national /toronto /fords-push-for-private-trash-collection-pays-off /article2212290/ - Garbage

We see no such thing in your link... it just talks about blacks and hispanics being poorer in general.

  • @UrbyKris If schools are only available to those who can afford it, So poor people get no education, Which statistically is non-whites then you are punishing people who are through no fault of their own poor (Children not parents)

This is a terrible idea and the link was supposed to show you who you would be punishing. I guess this is a little over your head as you seem to think of policy as serving only successful people, Unsuccessful people will just be stuck in a downward spiral.

  • @gihaification Hm... well you got your links btw? Funny how you just want to talk about schools now.

So you're saying that it's racist because more people who are non-white are poor? Lol... logic...

Let's say that the basic rule of supply and demand doesn't apply to education since you can only comprehend concretes...

How am I punishing the poor by not forcing someone to pay for their education?

I don't think policy is supposed to "serve" anyone... just not interfer.

  • @UrbyKris This is going nowhere, Your inability to grasp even basic policy and see the obvious effects of privatising everything without public options.

But its policy’s like these that show you the real agenda. It’s not about creating a better society it’s about helping Rich stay rich and putting poor people in their place. The exact reason why Somalia doesn’t progress anywhere, some people get money/guns and dictate to everyone else.

Nice chatting with you! cya around, BB

  • @gihaification It's not about putting poor people in their place. The type of sistem that allows the government to have enough power to help corporations is what's keeping the poor down. But the reality is that if the mafia wants protection money corporations are going to protect themselfs.

The warlords did not get "rich"/in power with productivity... they used the lack of a police force to get there

But I knew that once your points were countered this was what you'd resort to.

  • @gihaification It's funny though that you quit now when you don't really have much to say and not before... and yet you still claim that it's because of my inability to grasp.

  • @gihaification Bye, bye... hope you learned anything

  • @gihaification Also: Why don't you provide a link about a company that should have been regulated in Somalia?

  • @UrbyKris I bet writing this you felt like ya got me! But this is why you’re so weak, You didn’t even try to answer your own question and so.....

    somaliareport com/index.php/post/1287/Toxic_Dumping_Pirate_Excuse_or_Ongoing_Abuse

Toxic dumping going on in Somalia, Companies hauling chemicals around the world and dumping them in libertarian paradise waters/land because they have no EPA.

This is getting really embarrassing now... Perhaps you have some data to support any of your ideals?

  • @gihaification I bet writing this you felt like ya got me!

Right back at you! I think that there should be some pollution regulations and it would be decreased if more or all of the land was private. Ever heard of the tragady of the commons?

For an example of a bad regulation look at the minimum wage.. alot of jobs that people would offer are simply not worth the legal wage. And so those people can't get a job

Also, you just ignored the links and the two previous comments I poste

  • @gihaification And even when the regulations create some job that wasn't even needed before it stills increases the costs of products.

  • @UrbyKris any data to support that idea? cause theres loads of data out there of companies breaking any and all laws to earn a buck an not passing the saving onto there customers.... Just look at the joke that is the USA health care system, Compare that to any other health care system, Costs Way more and doesnt save any more lives for the costs.

    en.wikipedia org/wiki/Health_care_system#Cross-country_comparisons

Try comparing the UK vs USA there....

  • @gihaification Well it's basic economics. When you pass regulations the costs of production goes up and the products are therefore more expensive.

The US health care costs are kinda screwed because of regulations that increase the barrier to entry. Read the What's Really Wrong with the Healthcare Industry article from Mises for more info.

I'm glad you concede the Somalia point though...

  • I want to live there.

  • Seasteading is the dumbest idea ever.

  • @onsaphi Yeah there has never been a worse idea.

  • Anyone want a conservative version of this?

  • Too much living space, not enough food production space. There are agriculture methods which can produce a lot of food in impressively small spaces, but still nowhere near the efficiency needed to support the implied population of that design. The converted oil-rig idea might work as a secluded taois, tibetan, or franciscan monestary, but not for a community of people with normal appetites and living standards.

  • And what about bad weather and killer waves and 1000 of other problems? Very stupid. Very.

  • @branless There aren't many killer waves in the middle of the ocean

  • So, where do the gardens and animal food supplies go?

  • Completely impractical solution for a waterborne structure, subject to high winds and inertial rocking, it’s such an antiquated building typology stuck on a floating platform! It has absolutely no compatibility with an ocean environment nor any sense of nautical compatibility, at best it’s a whimsical, discordant layout - extremely puzzling how this medieval contraption could even be considered for such a contemporary design challenge, let alone an alleged ‘winner’ of the SeaStead competition?!

  • Do people have any idea how much this would cost? Most likely a fortune beyond the reach of a lot of people. And thats for a island community that is extremely dependent on imported goods and services which it would obtain by...? Unless you make a self sufficient island which would either cost even more or substantially reduce living standards.

  • Why is the pool there? Are the residents not willing to just build stairs twenty feet in any direction off the edge of their artificial island?

  • Yo, what's with all the wires?

  • Nice music. :)

BTW, this "Seasteading" idea looks reallu interesting. Anyone know where I can get some more info? Thanks!

  • @GarlicPudding

The music is from a band named "Zero 7", I don't remember which song though... although all their music is as good :)

  • it's good against earthquakes but is it stuck ground of the bottom of the ocean? because than you'll have a problem with sea level rising due to global warming.

also, what army will protect the piece of heaven from pirates ?

  • @hazeret

Private security companies or the inhabitants themselves; the idea is to grow away from statism.

  • @Agitpropist and what will stop private security when they want to make bad things?

  • @Incrue Competition

  • @Agitpropist

But how competition would prevent one company to became as big as microsoft? And AFTER having that much power and become, let's say, THE biggest private army on earth, if it wants to do bad things there ain't much people can do to stop it

  • @Incrue War isnt profitable in a free market. But if you want to know more about this, read "The Machinery of Freedom" by economist David Friedman.

  • @Agitpropist by the way, i'm not defending one big socialist govern, i just think that life have no easy answers

  • @hazeret Pragmatically speaking, these things won't be very profitable targets for pirates.

They're meant to be fuctioning seaborne communities, so they won't be bursting at the seams with loot like a freighter.

  • @GarlicPudding Plus, since they are their own nation states, they could be bursting at the seams with .50 caliber machine guns and have zero tolerance for pirates.

  • Very nice. I thought it looked perhaps a bit too fancy and happy and colourful at first, but that was just the perspective, it's great from ground... sea... deck..? level.

  • Huh, durva lehetne egy ilyen helyen lakni! :D Nem vagyok járatos a 3D grafikában, de nekem tetszik! :D Gratulálok hozzá!
