I used one of these to help set up my motorised satellite system and although, as you say, they find the sweet spot it sure is a bind trying to keep it on the right spot when you do the securing nuts up tight.
@AlbertInSanAntonio Check you wiring, drop a line straight from the dish to the box and see what happens. of course assuming your dish is still mounted leveled and the line of sight is not obstructed if all that is good then , next step will be the LNB and the box.
@TheTurkCrime Once you get a noise like this you turn the volume down a little and recheck as you turn the dish until you get this sound once more. That should be it. It's not as accurate as the expensive meters, but work.
@uraijit I got that problem fixed and have to now replace a portion of the cable my big puppy chewed into. I have the tools to take care of that problem and will be back in business as soon as I move the dog to a new location. My new sonicview receiver just don't work as good as my old mercury II did. I get channels from some satellites, but with no strength signal on the new one the channels don't work.
@uraijit If you don't have a motorized dish you can get a motorized dish if you live where you can put one up. You will be able to get more channels. I love the Pentagon Channel, Al Jazeera, and other news channels. I can only get the NASA channel on Directv which is a subscription channel. I just can not get any channels from satellites over most of Europe.
These meters are REALLY cheap and will put your patience on a test ! They either indicate full signal or no signal. Once, you'll have a "full signal" indication, use the gain pot (button on lower right) to reduce the meter's deflection and continue to align the dish to obtain highest deflection (and annoying beeeeeeeeeep !!).
They are useful, but a log (dB) indication would be A LOT better !!!!
I have one like that which came with my kit and it will find a satellite, but I have a motorized system and wonder how it will work with adjusting it?
Please see the title of the video and read the large print on the satellite finder. Maybe my eyes are bad... Does it say wifi finder? No, it doesn't, does it?
Yes, because EVERYONE wants to drop $500+ on a meter to get free to air satellite :/ . I'm sure the bird dog works great and if you install direct tv for a living you would want a good one but cut the guy some slack.
SOUTH CALIFORNIA FTA Service Technician Over 5 Years Experience in SATELLITE, Repair and Service. Yes! I mount and install satellite systems and cable lines. call or send text. This will help a little but it will tone no matter what satellite it is on and he probably has the gain turned all the way up to make it appear to work better.
y,know i got one of these and it was so unstable. i gave it a fair test but now i just use the STB level meters and a pair of walkie talkies. i see M,s are selling a new digital meter for around £80 GBP
wo i just got a satellite dish and wanted to install it myself than paying some dude and after this video is saw that "satellite finder" and i tought its ez but it costs 60 bucks about much i'll the satellite dude!
This is not done correctly. Read the instructions! When you get the maximum reading on the needle, you need to hold the dish in that position. Then reduce the gain on the meter with the knob so that the reading drops to about halfway. Then try to maximise the signal again...
i bought mine at ebay for 8 dlls, and the first time i thought the same, but you gotta learn how to use it, its real simple and fun, got my dish network set to 125 in no time
I'm looking for advice on a problem with my 1.2m dish in spain.
Its pointing ok for Freeview and I have fine tuned it with a meter. The transponder frequency settings are changed on the box to 12.051. The box still cant find a signal. Can anybody tell me what could be wrong?
If you're after BBC/ITV, it could be that the dish is too small or incorrectly aligned:these use Astra2D at 28.2degE with a tight focussed beam which is only visible on a 1.2m antennae in the extreme northern border close to france and is more difficult to receive further south.
Has anyone else ever heard of Free to Air Satellite??? I had no idea what this was until maybe 2 weeks ago. All I had to buy was the actual satellite receiver and I get the channels for free. I don't even get charged monthly. I wish i would've known about this shit before I spent thousands on DirecTV!
You can get set up with a receiver here if you wanna check it out:
"ABADSS dot COM"
don't know why it won't let me post the actual link... ??
they are okay if you are using a small dish, using them with a bigger dish sucks, you have to hit the signal and go in and see what you are hitting, i remember using one trying to hit 93 of a primestar dish for wild feeds, and i kept hitting damn 95! use a birdog for fta!
Yeah but if that was a linear or universal LNB you could be hitting the wrong satellite, theres like 60+ out there. I stick with the Birdog meter, they are pricy as fuck but I got mine for free XD.
This video shows how a satellite meter can help finding the sweet spot to perfectly align a satellite dish. These meters are really useful little helpers.
easier than a SWR meter

Yup. You're supposed to turn it down, and tune it in, until you can get signal at the very lowest volume that you can.

never use the bowl of the dish to align, you may bend it or it skews the reading, hold the back bracket and th BASE of the boom arm (not the LNB end)
