I'm 14 and have been practising graphic design for around 8 months now and already i have designed shop logos and branded companies in my area. I believe when you look at a portfolio you should just look at their amazing abstract HDRI shapes in cinema 4d or any of their amazing photo-manipulation but what they have done so far without any agencies.
@Apachiiee Go to school. That will make you a real graphic designer. There is so much more to being one than knowing how to use the software. Everyone is a "graphic designer" nowadays. Designing is making functional problem solving solutions. The is semiotics, rhetoric, etc.
i think Ive made up my mind as too what I want to do. when i grow up. Im 34
And thats design.
I understand your outlook on your youtube subject and i couldnt agree more with all of your heads up information. This helps me and i havent even started.
hard line face on myspace. is what Ive done as an "artist"
I have to say your advice is SO much better than some of the other videos I've seen. You obviously know what you are talking about. I've been trying to get into Graphic Design for quite some time but haven't had much luck.
I tried posting my graphic design service ads in craigslist but I get a lot of junk. I checked the statistics of my website and there have been ZERO hits. Any tips on that? Thanks.
I heard a lot about your criteria of choice, but very little on how to achieve things! are you actually gonna explain that or just tell people that they have to learn on their own in a really obnoxious way?
by the way the spacing around you looks very creative!
good thing you were born knowing how to design and fully professionally developed, otherwise according to what is correct to you, no one would have helped you, i totally agree with be succeeding at work, but there's a lot more failure and learning involved before that happens.
I was an AD at Y&R and McCann-ericksson and you know what they tell you on your first day, if you have doubts just ask, its easier then dealing with messes.
@diogomaia1981 You just seem very ticked off and frustrated and need someone to take it out on. I'm not saying I wrote the graphic design bible here. You like my advice you can take it or leave it. If you just have a cheap shot to land, then go punch a pillow.
The main thing everyone should know is that working as a graphic designer has very little to do with 'creative' design. All the years of 'training' are a waste of time. Most of the time you will only encounter complete fools on a powertrip. As this video testifies - the reality is a bland world full of bland people who don't want YOUR ideas. They want THEIR predicable tosh made to look 'pretty'. Expect to work hours of UNPAID overtime. It's a soulless occupation. You know exactly what I mean.
BUT, what if this is your first time in the design world? Everyone has to start somewhere, and if EVERYONE demands a portfolio before starting then how are you ever going to build one up to start with?
I just want to say that in any job you choose to do if your many priority is to make money you will never succeed first be the best that you can be enjoy your work be capable to communicate with different kinds of people and the list never ends its a learning process all your life
I really enjoy your videos is always a pleasure to learn from others experiences thanks
when i study autocad drafting in just 3 months i just got a job for graphic design it took me to go to school again to study autocad then they want me what the fuck is that
It helps a lot if you can form sentences and spell too - as well as having even half a clue what graphic design is and not just being an antagonistic prick on a perfectly good video.
I've never joined them, I'm sure you'll get some useful information and meet some other designers possibly. But you can also do the same thing by social networking and surfing the net and just going out there and meeting people.
My school wants me to join AIGA. Are you a member or anyone you know? Is it as important as my school sais it is or are they just trying to get my money, because I know are schools GD club gets money back when we pay to join.
while you are in school, the AIGA is not too important in terms of academic success; however, it is very helpful when trying to network with working professionals.
When you graduate you should be a member of the AIGA.
Go to the AIGA workshops and stuff, i have found it really useful.
Slap to the head! Thanks for the insight! I was once given one of those little mini-projects/tests to work on... and I thought for sure it was a trick! Made me so freakin' nervous!! :)
This is a great video, albeit a little dry. I am trying to show my high-school age graphic design students what the "real world" is like and it's great to hear "straight from the horse's mouth". It's also good to hear that it reinforces what I've already been teaching! ;)

@diogomaia1981 We are not interior designers, we are graphic designers.
It's easy to break down someone else to make yourself feel better, its a lot more work to build something and succeed at it.
