@DigitalDNA Unquestionably fine playing. But you appear to have missed the point. Her excessive gestures add NOTHING to the performance. And as usual her playing IS wonderful and flawless, her RIDICULOUS gestures can ONLY DETRACT.
@mrwasbesonders Sorry all you folks who seem to compare music, musicians, performances and pieces as if they RAM cards in a computer to be swapped in and out when you need more "go". After playing violin for over 38 years, I can personally tell anyone that once you start becoming one with any instrument, the two of you are "ALIVE" together and it can only be experienced, not described in words. Try telling someone what an orange tastes like without using the word orange. Only eating one does it!
@elixir22vyle737 Thanks, I hate comparisons as well. But I don't actually recall doing what you're accusing people of, in this instance in any event. My sentiments were that I love the playing, and hate the excessive body movement. I think you are mixing me up with someone else. Thanks for the comment though. You have expanded my surrealistic horizons.
@DigitalDNA I didn't say they were "totally" ridiculous. I just said ridiculous, though actually your addition of the word "totally" reveals an omission on my part. Thank you for flagging it up.
well, I wouldn't say legendary... she's OK overrated as many these days! Type Sergey Krilov Saint saens Gala 13 09 09 to see a great performance of the piece.
@DigitalDNA It isn't necessary to move and sway in order to get a better sound... That is silly. and stump like performance?.. I'm sure you wouldn't say Heifetz has a stump performance.. He doesn't move around or show emotion.. but that doesn't matter... emotion should be heard through the music.. which Heifetz does. All in all I still love Janine.. Your stump comment was somewhat irritating.
@DigitalDNA I understood perfectly what you said... but you're trying to skew it otherwise pretending it had some secret different meaning in order to defend yourself.. please.
@DigitalDNA Maybe you should re-read what you wrote and think about rewording it it you didn't mean it to sound that way... Because your comment is basically saying that it takes energy for her to perform the movements she makes.. and if a person doesn't make the movements she does (playing like a stump), then they'll have a terrible performance.. So please reword that.
@sirus804 You are a clueless lune. You putting words in my mouth now? Okay I'll explain, you thick cunt. There are many great musicians out there that really don't have a physical performance when they're playing. If im investing 90$ in a ticket to see a concert, there had better be a MUSICIAN THERE!!! Not a STUMP producing beautiful music. When it comes down to concerts, you're going to see both, musician, and music, not one. Thats why theres variety. Did I crack that thick skull just a bit?
@sirus804 it doesn't matter what kind of movements a musician makes when they're playing. As long as they play it well then who the hell cares? If you think any great performance is bad just because they moved or didn't move, then you are certainly there for the wrong reasons. I do think too much movement such as in this case that all the moving around and creepy looks can distract from the music itself. But overall it was a splendid performance and sometimes we just have to close our eyes...
@sirus804 Heifetz may not sway and move, but even he has a way of holding himself as he plays (and an expression that gives the piece his own voice) that is unique to him, so in SEEING Heifetz perform, one would expect that visual representation. I could go further to say without it, one might be disappointed in seeing him perform..
Actually, this is beatiful playing and I enjoy it more by not looking at the video and just listening. She doesnt need the histrionics. The playing stands by itself. Why do so many great players these days who while playing wonderfully eg. Joshua Bell, Maxim Vengerov, and Janine opt to look like they have body movement and facial expression tourets? Maybe they really have, after all some people believe Heifetz was aspergic. Maybe its the downside to being a genuis.
@arielsonnenberg I would personally say it is not in the same league as The Spice Girls' dancing in their video "Tell me what you want, what you really really want." I think it has the edge over the late great Wacko Jacko's "Thriller" however, though as with much music art and dance this is so much about personal preference.
Bravo... You should be teaching how to play this to Anne Akiko Meyers!!! Look at the site counter ...more than 100x Anne Akiko Meyers' performance. I bet you'r not playing a $3.6M violin.
Amazing ! People who don't like this video dont understand the way Janine plays and the way she understands how it has to be played! doesnt matter she's perfect for this piece!
And she skipped a few notes at 3:25 at the top of the run. Her fast off the string sound is sloppy, muddied and indistinct compared to Nat. But Nat, omg what a master of that.
Sort of impossible to ever fill those shoes.
Now, as for the movement. Is that causing any "damage?" I'm not convinced of that in total. I really don't see a lot of excessive movement.
Well, I agree with you about the timing and etc but Milstein:, he's my hero so of course I agree. You can hear that in the 1st 5 bars! But it is also an outdoor performance and the mic might be playing tricks on her sound. That-s where motion is definitely a problem! Yes, 1:32 is messed up. N.M. has the music right there and she's interpreted it. But at 1:39 she has a great rock n' roll G-string growl haha.
I don't understand all these comments about her facial expressions or her "dancing". I personally attend concerts to HEAR the music being played. If the artist's face or body movement distracts one, one should close their eyes and open their ears. I completely agree with the statement that this performance is one of the best I've heard.

en her face, omg x'3. lol, it's just too much, and you can't see if she feels the music, becauce, her face doesn't let to see that, and her dancing =-= is terrible...

well, I wouldn't say legendary... she's OK overrated as many these days! Type Sergey Krilov Saint saens Gala 13 09 09 to see a great performance of the piece.

@NOalRAZZISMO Well, 31 people, on top of 672, think otherwise, as well as my self.

@sirus804 You're irritating, misunderstanding the core concept of what I said.
DigitalDNA 6 months ago
@DigitalDNA I understood perfectly what you said... but you're trying to skew it otherwise pretending it had some secret different meaning in order to defend yourself.. please.
sirus804 6 months ago
@sirus804 And you misunderstand me yet again. Prejudice much? Piss off.
DigitalDNA 6 months ago
@DigitalDNA Maybe you should re-read what you wrote and think about rewording it it you didn't mean it to sound that way... Because your comment is basically saying that it takes energy for her to perform the movements she makes.. and if a person doesn't make the movements she does (playing like a stump), then they'll have a terrible performance.. So please reword that.
sirus804 6 months ago
@sirus804 You are a clueless lune. You putting words in my mouth now? Okay I'll explain, you thick cunt. There are many great musicians out there that really don't have a physical performance when they're playing. If im investing 90$ in a ticket to see a concert, there had better be a MUSICIAN THERE!!! Not a STUMP producing beautiful music. When it comes down to concerts, you're going to see both, musician, and music, not one. Thats why theres variety. Did I crack that thick skull just a bit?
DigitalDNA 6 months ago
@sirus804 it doesn't matter what kind of movements a musician makes when they're playing. As long as they play it well then who the hell cares? If you think any great performance is bad just because they moved or didn't move, then you are certainly there for the wrong reasons. I do think too much movement such as in this case that all the moving around and creepy looks can distract from the music itself. But overall it was a splendid performance and sometimes we just have to close our eyes...
MidniteHasStruck 6 months ago 2
@sirus804 Heifetz may not sway and move, but even he has a way of holding himself as he plays (and an expression that gives the piece his own voice) that is unique to him, so in SEEING Heifetz perform, one would expect that visual representation. I could go further to say without it, one might be disappointed in seeing him perform..

seriously, she is truely the best.

This is the best performance i have seen since since Margot Fonteyn dancing Coppelia.
arielsonnenberg 1 year ago
@arielsonnenberg I would personally say it is not in the same league as The Spice Girls' dancing in their video "Tell me what you want, what you really really want." I think it has the edge over the late great Wacko Jacko's "Thriller" however, though as with much music art and dance this is so much about personal preference.

Bravo... You should be teaching how to play this to Anne Akiko Meyers!!! Look at the site counter ...more than 100x Anne Akiko Meyers' performance. I bet you'r not playing a $3.6M violin.

2:02 - come on guys, put some passion into it...like me
2:14 - oops I spasmed, twice, but it sounded normal! heh heh
2:37 - stupid, pesky nose itch...

I really don't see a lot of excessive movement.
vibratingstring 1 year ago
