  • Clunking sound from the front can also be your strut mount bearings. Just pop the cap off of the strut mounts under the hood. And put some bearing grease in their, you will see the ball bearings. I've heard this simple step can work wonders to e46 suspension noises.

  • my local dealers charged me $540 for this job, $40 for the job $500 to scratch his big fat ass

  • @battlecruiser100 Def time to invest in some tools and some know how!

  • Those are called FCAB (front control arm bushings). If your FCABs are that shot and you think your car feels new now go change your RTABs. Rear trailing arm bushings. I prefer buying poly urethane ones.

  • I've just replaced the control arms on my Z3. They're pretty much the same as this. It's an easy enough job & on mine I replaced the control arm bushes with powerflex polyurethane ones. The difference is amazing. No wandering, tramlining or twitchy handling. Sockets, spanners & a ball joint splitter is all you need.

  • My sister is having a problem that exists when slowing down..I noticed that coming up to a stop with medium brake pressure the car starts to pull to the left, there is also alot of swaying going on at higher speeds..Could this be the problem?

  • My e46 has been fitted new ones and they move just like this,

  • This is a logical diagnosis. Rarely does a blown fuse make a clunking sound.

  • And to think mine is just over a year old and make this noise and the dealer ship couldn't find the problem. Thanks for identifying the problem.

  • The real way you can tell if its the bushings is when you lightly tap on the brakes you'll hear a clunky noise from inside the car, also you can see it pull the control arms back if you watch outside the car when your slowly driving

  • I hope this is the problem my BMW has. I dont know what else it would be. I looked at it today but it doesnt move as easily as this one shown in the vid. But it just makes a clunking noise when going over any bump.

  • @TobySV650 Could be the ball joints as well. Both the bushings and ball joints tend to fail around 60,XXX miles on BMW's

  • Local BMW dealer wanted $600+ to replace 1 worn bushing ($200+ for bushing repair, and another $400+ for a mandatory alignment).

Told them to go pound sand.

  • @BoogieWithStew wow thats insane

  • can some one see my video to help diagnosing a sound? Control Arms changed, bushings, balljoints, sway bar links. still same sound but now its getting worst and mor frequent heres my video watch?v=JPLB_qw717M

  • ah~ arm bush

  • Powerflex pu-bushes last million times longer! ;)

  • element7us

If its like a fast clicking clunking it is your wheel bearing

  • I have a e46 m3 and everytime I turn the wheel left or right the driver side rear wheel make a loud sound..... has anyone ever had this problem???? :(

  • @element7us OK , these cars have had a suspension problem but now everytihng is under control, I heard a sound in the front wheels when I turn left or right and the problem was the hidraulic bomb, this one had a lot of problems and then BMW invented a new system Hidraulic bomb with some alternative aluminium tubes to supply this error. Probably you got to check the rear traction that will be a hit in a wheel with a hole.

  • if its only when ur turnin it could be c.v joint bud bearing

  • yea man mine was the same,Does anyone know how to get every bit of air out the block of m43 engine ,e46 2000 model 318 ci,dam things airlocked and the cablin heatercore s full of air ,tryied to bleed the air out the usual way but that only bleed tye rad? can anybody help me?

  • yeah you need to bleed it while parked on a steep hill facing up. just open the bleeder screw and wait for all the airbubbles to disappear. (with the car running and heater set to hot on full blast)

  • really is that gonna work?someone told me that but every time i get to the closest steepest hill i know the cars always too hot,an steamin an bubblelin out all over the kip,by that time.and also do i have to wait till the stat opens? thanks noely:)

  • well you could just drive up on some ramps, it doesnt have to be a 45 degree hill haha but you need the engine to fully warm up but dont let it overheat because that could damage your head. if it starts overheating just shut it off and let it cool down. but get all the bubbles out of the cooling system

  • hehehe:) thanks man.ive already got some sham to put a reconed head in it he said the old ond was cracked and it still over heats the odd time, that why i think she has iar in her? plus me heatin insides not workin full wack, never did even after the prick done the head?1700 euro, ronan ismail motors from kilbarrik Dublin

  • @thefloorjacker Noel you big shambolic keyboard warrior! your head was cracked, and we replaced everything when doing the head it was done properly that's why it cost 1700,did you forget to mention to the good people of youtube that you were putting bottles of nova-stop in it regularly before we did the job? effectively restricting the flow in the cooling system?? Thought not :-)

  • @thefloorjacker fuck you

  • @p1fly shite machanic

  • mine have just gone, one day the steering wheel started moving eft and right from 30mph up to 60mph, after that it pulls to the left. im replacing the bushing and the lower arm, as the arms dont last much longer than the bushings.

  • I have the same problem as well. Damn control arm bushings

  • Check out my page dude you want to see a real clunking sound :P Did that end up solving the problem?

Nice upload, hope you posted a DIY on a forum somewhere.

  • got the same prob

  • Yeah this one is on my list to do, along with vanos seals, water pump, diff mounts, spark plugs, fuel level sensor, and various other electrical problems, its a good thing I love my car so much.

  • amen to that. i don't even love it, i just put up with it for some reason.

  • @inlinesicks

You replace both TPS sensors over/under manifold intake ?

How about the Bermi 6 coils that are bad says BMW SB 2005, change with $65 ERA brand. Or go online for $30ea Bosch.

BMW charges $660 for coil replace.

    Calibrate throttle bodies during TPS.

You get SMG pump failure yet ?

SRS bag light yet, its the plastic rack under bag. $150 install

  • i just changed both controll arms and boushing with after market and not dealer parts and it cost to me 195$ each side and 130$ labor

  • Is that the reson why when goes over speed bumps or broken raod it makes noise. thx

  • Exactly. It is possible it could be other things too, but in this case it was the Control Arm Bushing..at slow speeds if you hit the brake you will hear the clunk...

  • Thanks for that, I have taken my car to garage twice under warranty they can't find any problems, so much so they passed the MOT as well. I am sure I am not loopy; I did say to them I will pay for the fix, warranty classes this as wear n tear anyway.

    Annoying!

  • Needs the Control Arm Bushing replaced. Forums recommend Meyle HD Replacements. They are sold in pairs and cost on average $100.00 shipped on Ebay.

  • Bought the BOGE Control arms off ebay for $59.00 shipped. Fixed the issue, car feels like new now.

  • How are your BOGE control arms holding up? And when you bought them did they come with the ball joints already installed?

  • @trinjaminternational Hello. I would not recommend the Meyle CAB. I installed a pair about 3 months ago and it was very disappointing. Creaking noise when you stop. I had to remove them to grease the inner walls of the the urethane component despite being told that it would damage the urethane but did it anyway. That did not resolve the problem however lessened the noise.Try Lemforder or Bilstein brands. That is what I am going to do soon.
