This orchestra is right up there among the greatest in the world. For this piece, I still like Reiner and the Chicago Symphony just a little better. Dudamel gets going a little too fast too soon.
HappyWandy457, This conductor has already got to levels others only dreamed of:
There is no part of his body which doesnt conduct!! Obviously, any musician at stage can not withstand this attraction at concert. In adition to this, he is as humble as a person con be at rehearsal and that makes him unique: He learns from his music-mates as still being in Barquisimeto, a small town in Venezuela.
Kudos Berliner Phil. I've watched a number of video clips now and each one is sensational. Superb sound and direction. But it's refreshing to note that even the BP needs editing. (Note the different audiences sitting behind the timpanist at 2:06 and 2:33.) Makes the world seem a little less daunting, especially to us mortals.
I think I might write to deutsche grammaphon and request that Dudamel records a Rachmaninov set! His interpretation is fantastic, and of course the Berliner Philharmoniker are just amazing!
The timpani-brass BAM ..... BAM ..... BUh BUh BUh BAM, right at the end of this clip, was breathtaking. All that remains after those bomb-bursts is the lingering strings shimmering mezzo piano through the like the ringing in one's ear after aerial bombardment. If I ever hear anyone else conduct this piece, I will be disappointed if the orchestra doesn't follow Dudamel's formula for these few measures of sonic excitement.
Right, so like a good many great painters, Gustavo should only be lionized after he dies....jeez, people; can't you just enjoy (or not) a 'teaser' of a video without trashing the conductor because he's got hair? Ask the musicians what THEY think of him!
Gustavo Dudamel has memorized the entire score. He owns this piece, and the musicians know it, and play accordingly. With Gustavo, you will be on a musical ride of your life. VIVA VENEZUELA, and what a gift to the world.
Great great great! I just saw Dudamel conduct a magnificent piece on Tv at Mezzo (divertimezzo) but forgot how the piece was called... I immediately fell in love with that music, so complex, so godlike, so magnificent!!! Haven't found it yet on youtube though... First my love went for Harold in Italy by Berlioz, but that's changed ofcoarse...
Dudamel conveys the energy and life of the music like very few. Thanks for showing the world that South American musicians have a lot to say in the European-driven music stage.
Check out Fritz Reiner's incandescent recording with the Chicago Symphony, in glorious stereo; Dmitri Mitropoulos also made an ancient but magnificent recording of this magnificent piece, which can be found on YouTube. No orcehstra is as great as the Berliners, however.
I really would love to see some videos of the rehearsal process with the BPO. What goes on during rehearsals, how are rehearsals run, etc. Perhaps some segments like "In Rehearsal with the Berlin Philharmoniker".
In general, the orchestra prefers to rehearse rather unwatched and present itself in the public just with its best achievements. But you are right, this can be a fascinating project, and we are already working on this idea.
I would love to see some rehearsal segments as well....done right it can be great...like Bohm in reheasal (now showing up on DVD)....Karajan doing Symphony 4 from the 60's or in rehearsal with the VPO near the end of his life. Find one or two conductors who would not mind...Rattle/Haitink or maybe Boulez or Jansons...
I hope the Berlin Philharmonic can set up a chamber DCH in the chamber hall and broadcast the orchestra's chamber ensembles over the net to....the CDCH... :)
I wanted to see this concert but my registration with your site did not go through. Up to now I'm still waiting for my email confirmation. I did inquire about it at your website and still haven't received any replies. It's been almost a week now. I'm wondering if anyone had gone through the same experience. Or am I the only unlucky one?
I belong to a generation who just wishes and dreams that Leonard Bernstein was still around to watch and marvel at.
This man...Gustavo Dudamel...is the Bernstein of my generation. I love him, and he is quickly becoming one of my heroes. He has a long ways to go, but the man is so inspiring and passionate.
In some ways I hope he does not become another Bernstein, Bernstein's performances where sometimes sloppy and he could be erratic...the BPO has great ensemble play...hearing them be sloppy like the NYP was at times under Bernstein would be such a shame...Dudamel is very good but he might be better to perhaps follow more of Abbado...very musical but exacting as well.
Thank YOU Berliner Philharmoniker for making it possible to have concerts available on youtube in HIGH Quality!! Thank you so much! This is a change in history. I am excited about the following stuff
One of Rachmaninov's non-pianistic masterpieces......The BPO has bever sounded more lyrical with the exceptionnal warmth of the strings section. The brass section is quite amazing too........
questa orchestra sta di nuovo tornando ad essere la migliore, nonche lo sia stata, ma questo suono cosi imponente e grandioso fa venir voglia di studiare e suonare!
Yeah... indeed. I saw them in Baden-Baden last year in September, probably with the same pieces, at least among others was Strawinsky's Rite of Spring. Never heard that one so lively and full of joy! Amazing. It was an unforgettable evening!

Not once did Dudamel look down at the score. His eyes were on the musicians. Still blows my mind. No score. Now that is technique.
