This song was so underrated and so under-appreciated back when it was first released. But folks need to really LISTEN to it and HEAR THE WORDS. It has a POWERFUL message within it. ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS.
@Soulman785 I am so very glad to hear that SOMEONE ELSE besides me recognizes the beauty and awesome-ness in this song besides me. I swear , I could listen to this one all day long.
Happy Birthday Maurice White who turned 70 today!!! Thank you for your legendary musical contributions and powerful legacy. Your fans all Love you and are forever grateful for your dynamic vision for creating the greatest band of all time "Earth, Wind & Fire".
I was born in '80, but my dad still played the heck out of his records like they just came out, especially this one and Gratitude. He is still a huge EWF fan and I understand why, they are the baddest band or course. This album has always been one of my favorites that he played.
This is my favorite song by them. My mom had the album and 8 track tape. I bought the cassette tape when I was in high school and later bought the cd years later. Beautiful song. Very much underrated.
This is by far ...the most underated and unappreciated song in their repetoire. But to me.. this song stood out. Whatever group can make a song based on their name. Thank you Skip Scarborough.
@piccinini02 Brother, it's a link to Africa, Maurice White was studying Egyptology. It's one of the greatest civilizations known. at the time, no one was making that kind of statement linking the African American to the motherland. It was culturally awakening for those who no only like their music and message, but their inner thinking as well. This is why they stand out, like Stevie, Curtis Mayfield, Issac Hayes, TSOP, Gil Scott-Heron, and few others. Music of substance not bull****.
This is so beautiful, my god....what a group of muscians put together to send all the right messages then and today. Love is what it is all about.....PEACE
I could a one time sing this somewhat like Moe,,esp when I got down, this song would elevate me to another realm. Please listen closely to the lyrics and ponder it's depth
This is a gorgeous song in every way, co-written by Maurice and the great Alexander (Skip) Scarborough. It is ever 30 years old and just as wonderful and relevant today as it was upon release. Maurice's lyrics are second to none and he is the producer supreme. I love this album.
You'll never find another group in our current time that sings with such conviction like EWF. Truly amazing and I was blessed to listen to them in 1974 when I was 10 years old. I've been a faithful fan to this day.
RADIO may not have appreciated this song, but EWF's fans definitely did...including more than a few of their CONTEMPORARIES. They bit a lot of people, but Bar-Kays were DEFINITELY listening to this one. This is obviously one of the sings they imitated when they came up with "Attitudes." Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...but the Bar-Kays may have a bit excessive. :-)
@Odawg96 lol..I'm laughing at your statement regarding the Bar-Kays listening to this one & coming out with 'Attitudes' a year later....listen to EWF's song "On Your Face" from this same album & then listen to the Bar-Kays' song "Shine" from the 'Light of Life' album....lol
@shydmples Man, I've been getting into debates with people as of late about the Bar-Kays. They were good musicians, but they were BITERS. It's downright ridiculous how they imitated so many other acts. It's BLATANT and OBVIOUS to anyone who isn't deaf. All I had to do was listen to the first 15 or so seconds of "Shine", and I switched it off.
I absolutely love EWF and their music truly touches my soul. It honestly does something to me deep down inside. It's nice knowing other people are touched by their music as much as I am.
Against rules I logged on at work this morning to get me a dose of EWF. I forget which song I was listening to and decided to read some of comments. I started reading one comment, and I thought 'that's EXACTLY how I feel'. The more I read, the more it sounded like something I would have said. Wait a doggone minute - that log on name sounds kinda familiar. I was too tired to crack up when it dawned on me I'd created an account last year and it was indeed my own comment lol lol lol.
Truly great song and best r&b group EVER. What wonderful memories and times, when this was made...the 70s, yeah!........young people, this is REAL music.
This is the war song in the fight against negative thinking...life is so short to live in unhappiness. As unfair and cruel that life and time can be,there is an equal portion of good things that come our way...and if not, it's up to you to seek it out, there is still SOME good things left here on planet Earth,Don't die without knowing this to be a fact, this song proves it!
Absolutely my favorite group growing up. And this song is hard to top. Saw them in Philly when I was 15 off this album and All n' All. To this day, best concert I ever saw.
I gotta say, when it comes to EWF's hidden gems, this is up there with "Faces," "Turn It Into Something Good," " Here Today and Gone Tomorrow," and "Diana."
One of the best records ever by EWF ... it brings me back to my childhood and sitting in the living room playing this album over and over again. I brings back memories of my mother cooking in the kitchen. It is amazing how one song can trigger such clear memories and thoughts.
@dhwrd3X Miss those days. Life was so simple yet fun at the same time!!!! Wish I could go back. Now I know why old people say you should not want to grow up too fast. Enjoy your youth!!!
truly a hidden gem of a song. I bet if I called the r&b station and ask them to play this, they wouldve never heard of it. they're used to the standards: shining star, that's the way of the world, reasons, etc.
When I played this song in my car when i was rollin with my boys, one of em asked my to play it again -- ew&f, there will never be another...
@deltasigmatheta4life I couldn't agree more with you and when I was high school and part of a terrific marching band (A high Steppin'Band) not walking! EW&F greatly influenced our band director and us as a band but more to point, I am greatly impacted by this band as it holds personal and spiritual meaning for me. The song Earth Wind&Fire has in it's own right spirtual meaning where they're talkin' 'bout! Born of this earth are nature's children(God formed us from the dust of the Earth)
This was my theme song during High School, and I still love it. I think the pop problem comes from the fact that you could not really dance to it back in the Day.
Thanks for posting it, I thought I would never hear it again.
This is the main reason I got this album, which is one of my favorites of all time!!! Sadly, Charles Stepney, producer and writer of this album and other 3 EW&F albums, passed away after the release of this masterpiece. R.I.P.
Earth wind and fire are a part of my life. Being born in 70 this is ALL I heard the first 10 of my life. THis song was when I was 6. My mom and dad was together.Maurice White shut it down with song
"soul music" - a bunch of 55+ year old men in Earth Wind and Fire, on the road 3/4ths of the year -still being paid handsomely, supporting themselves and their families because of the timeless musical contribution - we know them as the 'elements', Earth Wind & Fire!
Great arrangement. I heard this track for the first time when it was added in error over the track "Imagination" on the "Elements of Love" compilation. This is a great record! They don't make records like this anymore. Thank you, Charles Stephney(RIP) and EW&F!
Maurice White & Skip Scarbrough got busy on this one...Skip also wrote Anita Baker's "Giving You The Best That I Got", but this is much better. A+++ The Message is in the Music. R.I.P., Skip. 11-26-44/7-3-03
Even though Skip wrote "Giving You The Best That I Got" for Anita Baker, this is the BEST tune that he could've EVER written...THE MESSAGE IS IN THE MUSIC!!!
You have to excuse my typos, I meant to say the masses don't know what they are talking about just what the "Mass Controller," tells them what to believe and what not to believe, when wiil they acted on their, who knows?!!?...it is sad that the beast of the field intellect is better than the average person, due to the strict adherence to the laws of nature, that is why a cow is better in mannerism than the common man!
This is to bigcree.... In reading the comments you have posted, you seem to know your EWF and music in general. I think EWF is the baddest band EVER in terms of being a COMPLETE group and the things they can deliver. Those things they can deliver, such as songwriting, music, harmony etc.( way too many to post ) Do you agree that they are truly the baddest group ever? Please reply ......
Oh YEAH! Way beyond their time and still Rock `n!! Creative gifts have been generously bestowed on them, us and Mother Earth by thier talent and endless energy. A force to be reckoned with at many levels, musically, philosophically, spiritually, mentally and CREATIVELY. Positively one of THE BEST and ENDURING Bands and Minds! YES!!
Someone here, most likely Maurice White was very interested in The Occult Mystery Schools. Excellent. And Occult ONLY is defined as HIDDEN! Not evil. Hidden.
There are great symbols and poetic expression that are Universal. This group was and is one of the best at it from this point of rerference. Even if you were`nt born yet!
great observance in what you have defended; the masses does know because they cannot, not seeing physically but you know what I mean, thanks for defending the hidden, big cree!
My friend , you are mistaken here. You have been pre programmed by the Matrix. Occult means 'Hidden'. Nothing more. Maurice White is a student of the 'World Religions AND Occult Mystery Schools'. Look up 'Astro Theology'. Then look up Michael Tsarion. You have much to see and REALIZE. Do NOT fear. But inquire and LEARN!
Not mistaken, some things are hidden for a reason. Certain things are not meant to be looked into. Even the vast oceans has boundaries and limits they are not to exceed. It's unwise to believe there are not boundaries and limits that we as human beings should not exceed. Some things are just off limits. That's why they are hidden.
Yes. But to not inquire of these Mysteries, leaves one in subservience to others and in Spiritual darkness, or IGNORANCE. That is your choice. Recall Morpheous to Neo. Red Pill or the Blue Pill........ You choose. And either walk through the door , one`s own MASTER, or continue in the dark, and ignorant to your own POTENTIAL. WE are our own SALVATION and MASTERS. CREATION has bestowed that onto ALL Life.
I truly believe walking through those particular doors has effected you enormously, in ways that I'm sure you can't see at this time. But I see and hear it in your Ideology, which by the way I couldn't disagree you more. The one thing you said i do agree with is, It's your choice. My choice is to be subservient to, receive SALVATION from, and declare that "Jesus Christ" and him alone is the MASTER and LORD of my life
I already knew where you were before you said it my dear Friend! It`s okay if the Religious Circle is where you feel your 'Salvation' as it were. I do not a feel a need for that, as I have been there done that. I am As the name implies Native American and we were FORCED long ago to go down the 'Religious path' . I follow my own these days. Many things I have seen and experienced tell me we are surrounded by an infinite LOVING Intelligence.
Knowledge leads to FREEDOM. Belief and faith are the paths of Spiritual Darkness and servitude to others , outside of ones SELF. This same SELF is connected ETERNALLY to CREATION or the GREAT MYSTERY. Inner strength and true wisdom come from the stillness of that connection. The ALL Knowing is from WITHIN. And this is Prayer. CREATION is everything. We are a part of it. A mere strand in Web of Life.
@bigcree, without trying to sound crude, but you're gonna be surprised to find out who you were serving one day, and it's not who or what you thought it was. All that intellectual talk sounds good, but its only empty words in the wind. Truth is in the anointed ONE, The "Christ" The Savior of the world. Outside of him there is no truth, only deception
My friend. I am beyond all of the man made 'Religion' so be okay with that. I am okay with where you sit. All roads are good, and the Individual is the one who chooses his or her path. We learn over many years to introspect and evolve Spiritually. We are free to choose our own paths in life. I do not walk in your moccasins. And you likewise. Yet we seek the path that we resonate with. And we become the wiser for it. And that is Mastery of one`s self.
EWF will live on as a prime example of Top Drawer Talent, Quality, Messeage Bringers as well as Entertainers. I have always admired these fellows for these atributes and lofty aspirations! Thanks for posting this CLASSIC ALL TIME REAL MUSICAL TALENTED GROUP! They transcend all boundaries of class, ethnicity and SPIRIT! Timless and Very POWERFUL MESSAGE!
It's amazing to me that Godly messengers like Maurice should have to suffer so while there are so many rotten bastards that never suffer a day in their lives!
@osensei2987 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord is ABLE to bring Maurice White out of them all..(Psalms 34:19)..God does work in mysterious ways, but His wonders are to perform..
@osensei2987 I sooooo agree. I heard Maurice sing live on Steve Harvey a couple of months ago and despite his illness he sounded wonderful. A true genius in every sense of the word!!!!
Even though I didn't purchase this album until the 80's, I can honestly say this is one of my favorites off this album as well as "Burning Bush"! Great Post!!!
Born of the Earth, are natures children,Fed by the Wind, the breath of life, Judged by the firey hand of God.... Gives me the chills every time I hear that!!! Thanks for the memories.
Great American Classical Pop will stand the test tof time. A song worthy of a traveller!Love the strings and orchestration reminds me of tv themes from when I was a youngin!EWF greatest band of ALL time.
Skip Scarborough wrote this and one of my favorite Phyllis Hyman songs : The Answer [Boy is You]. That man must have had a heart as big as the moon to get this kind of music out of him.
See this is where some of you are wrong... my 11 year old and his friend discovered ew&f on their own. And thats why i know They are the Greatest band of all time because theses songs are still touching the new generation!
In 1992, when Eternal Dance, their compilation came out, Virgin Records in Hollywood held an in-store promotion for it and Verdine White and Ralph Johnson, from the core old group, were there in person to promote the ultimate boxset.
I was there early and I was surprised at the low turn out for it.
Verdine and Ralph were also surprised and disappointed, like I was, at the lack of recognition this release was getting.
I asked why this song wasn't on the comp. and was brushed aside.
That sucks about the low turn out and that you didn't get an answer to your question. I hope it wasn't neither of the two members that brushed you aside.
They brushed you aside? They should have been glad you showed up. They must have been pissed at the low turn out. Ralph Johnson is cool I have talked to him on myspace. Verdine can never be reached...lol. This is one of their most spiritual songs. EWF had the best range in music style.
This song made me cry. My SPIRIT remembers where and who I was when this song came out. We were all on a higher plane when we had music like this playing everywhere. The vibrations sure have changed-and not for the better. When I think about the garbage that my son listens to now, it makes me realize-We need to come up! Thank you for posting this song. Where are the voices we the message we need so much now? If someone or a group out there has a gift like EWF, we need you! Peace and blessings.
SoulFired2008 - I couldn't agree with you more. This was REAL music. The lyrics are special. I wish our children were learning to play instruments instead of sampling other people's work, for that is the only reason we're bopping to any of that stuff at all (we remember the originals). I FEEL you on this!
The most under appreciated songs by EWF

I agree. This song did go unappreciated. It's really a great song.

Did you know the late Charles Stepney arranged this?
Chicago10281 2 years ago
Great arrangement. I heard this track for the first time when it was added in error over the track "Imagination" on the "Elements of Love" compilation. This is a great record! They don't make records like this anymore. Thank you, Charles Stephney(RIP) and EW&F!

Maurice White & Skip Scarbrough got busy on this one...Skip also wrote Anita Baker's "Giving You The Best That I Got", but this is much better. A+++ The Message is in the Music. R.I.P., Skip. 11-26-44/7-3-03

He also wrote You Cant Hide Love.

You're right about that....good looking out for that one..that is very true....he wrote that in 76...and that was the cut as well.

Not evil. Hidden.
bigcree 2 years ago
LOL, thanks for sending this. I am afraid i wasn't born yet when this was made.
Ezzedeen01 2 years ago
There are great symbols and poetic expression that are Universal. This group was and is one of the best at it from this point of rerference. Even if you were`nt born yet!

Thx again. Much appreciated :)

great observance in what you have defended; the masses does know because they cannot, not seeing physically but you know what I mean, thanks for defending the hidden, big cree!
kunsura 2 years ago 2
Surely!
bigcree 2 years ago
@bigcree, But it is evil. Not Maurice White but Occult, that's why it's defined as hidden
runotit 1 year ago
My friend , you are mistaken here. You have been pre programmed by the Matrix. Occult means 'Hidden'. Nothing more. Maurice White is a student of the 'World Religions AND Occult Mystery Schools'. Look up 'Astro Theology'. Then look up Michael Tsarion. You have much to see and REALIZE. Do NOT fear. But inquire and LEARN!
bigcree 1 year ago

My choice is to be subservient to, receive SALVATION from, and declare that "Jesus Christ" and him alone is the MASTER and LORD of my life
runotit 1 year ago
I already knew where you were before you said it my dear Friend! It`s okay if the Religious Circle is where you feel your 'Salvation' as it were. I do not a feel a need for that, as I have been there done that. I am As the name implies Native American and we were FORCED long ago to go down the 'Religious path' . I follow my own these days. Many things I have seen and experienced tell me we are surrounded by an infinite LOVING Intelligence.
bigcree 1 year ago
Knowledge leads to FREEDOM. Belief and faith are the paths of Spiritual Darkness and servitude to others , outside of ones SELF. This same SELF is connected ETERNALLY to CREATION or the GREAT MYSTERY. Inner strength and true wisdom come from the stillness of that connection. The ALL Knowing is from WITHIN. And this is Prayer. CREATION is everything. We are a part of it. A mere strand in Web of Life.
bigcree 1 year ago
@bigcree, without trying to sound crude, but you're gonna be surprised to find out who you were serving one day, and it's not who or what you thought it was. All that intellectual talk sounds good, but its only empty words in the wind. Truth is in the anointed ONE, The "Christ" The Savior of the world. Outside of him there is no truth, only deception
runotit 1 year ago
And that is Mastery of one`s self.

the great thing about their music is you can grow into the meanings and ideas, i still hold some EWF songs close like this one.

It's amazing to me that Godly messengers like Maurice should have to suffer so while there are so many rotten bastards that never suffer a day in their lives!
God surely works in mysterious ways!

I asked why this song wasn't on the comp. and was brushed aside.
sonicgrub 3 years ago
That sucks about the low turn out and that you didn't get an answer to your question. I hope it wasn't neither of the two members that brushed you aside.
RUMnWINE 3 years ago
They brushed you aside? They should have been glad you showed up. They must have been pissed at the low turn out. Ralph Johnson is cool I have talked to him on myspace. Verdine can never be reached...lol. This is one of their most spiritual songs. EWF had the best range in music style.

Only the true fans or those of us who on the CD know about this track. This is a Gospel song.
