arching isn't dangerous at all... quite the opposite, the nucleus pulposus is a the back of vertebral disks, the only way to make it pop out is to bend forward with much weight and pressure on it, like a bad good morning...
by arching the back you recruit more of the lower pec into the lift by making your body closer to a decline bench position. look at how much weight you put up in decline bench compared to flat bench.... thats why if your struggling with a rep you toss up your back and pound that sucker out.

Actually if you google Mark Rippetoe videos on youtube, you'll find out that your suppose to have an arch, enough to let a hand slip through, although he says not to let your ass lift off the bench, to each there own.
@iLyRetro Not really, arching you back is a common power lifting technique for the bench press. And there's no downward pressure on the spine because its a supported movement by the flat bench...
